I 'd like to agree with good old Skyglow about how cruisy Med is compared to Health Sci.

I think this apathy is fully justified although it makes some of the people that got in through Health Sci look slack because they seem to do no work compared to Health Sci. Believe I know. I'm one of those slack people.

Remember that Med School is all for the independent learning thing. You study what you feel like when you feel like.

I would also like to congratulate all HSFYers that made the cut. Just got back to the forum. :)

For those that didn't, there are many more opportunities out there and never give up the dream.

Didn't you do much better in second semester SASOL?

Reading about all your study plans is really.. comforting? It's certainly helping me get into the correct state of mind about HSFY and university in general...

I've been reading my Cambridge Biology and Chemistry textbooks in the evening, heh, just to refresh the mind.

Wow. Such keen Health Sci people. Glad to know Health Sci will be super competitive as always.

Congrats everyone!!!

Who here has facebook? I'd love to put some faces on the MSO aliases. My name is Mayad George. Add me if you guys want =]

Yes I did do better in 2nd semester lol.....makes you wonder about my study habits really. My brain has done its job for my lifetime, this year it needs to do as little as possible ha ha.

Haha aren't health scis at St Margs so competitive that they burn each others notes? Or is that just a yarn?

Lol who doesn't have facebook, whats health sci study without looking at facebook every 5 minutes! Good idea though, if you get a random add it will be me:lol:

But isn't it great hiding behind a computer? :lols::heyes::woot::drool:
You guys must think I'm mental with all these excited looking emoticons......but I just discovered them lol

Yeah I was like....SASOL must've discovered emoticons lol.

Haha I love the rumours about health scis sabotaging each others' notes. But wait, healthscis wouldn't do that, because they have too pure a character to do such a hideous and evil thing. They're gonna be future doctors for gods sake! *gasp* :lols:

Lol I used to hate seeing everyone reading their notes before minutes before exams, I was tempted to rip the notes away from them. In my HUBS lab these guys from St Margs sat opposite me and my mate and we always asked them for the answers (even though we knew them), and they always told us them wrong! We knew it was deliberate cos my mate overheard them saying 'you can't tell them the answers, imagine if they got in and we didn't!':lols:. Honestly it wouldn't make that much difference, but we just always asked to get them flustered lol

Wow some people do that? That's pretty screwed up :/ Students should be able to get in on their own merit, rather than hoping everyone else does bad!

I read my notes minutes before going into exams too, because I was always afraid that the info had slipped out of my mind, and I didn't keep up during the semester so a lot of last-minute studying was needed :( Some students gave me awful awful looks for that haha.

Yeah even future doctors do that lol!! Though their attitude may have got caught out by that wonderful personality distinguisher, UMAT haha. Guess I'll find out if they got in soon.

Haha when I walked in the first time to room where everyone was waiting, I was like WOW I don't recognise ANYONE in this room. I was thinking all those motivated people who sat in the front half of the class who I saw day after day would get in, but I couldn't see any of them amongst the crowd. Almost feels like my class consisted nearly of students taken from the back 5 rows of the lecture theatre haha.

Yeah thats gonna be pretty weird, like I recognised some HSFY people I don't even know in the street, but I keep forgetting there are so many I probably haven't seen who will be in med.

Does everyone tend to sit with their hall groups in lectures or whatever?
I used to sit on the side nearest to the cafe with all the Selwyn people in St Davids, never ever sat at the front lol

Might be the same again considering that the Carrington "area" of St. David's (don't you just love it how the lecture theatre got divided up into different areas for different halls) was right near the back and from what I've heard a hell of a lot of us got into med.

Also I reckon there might be something in the theory that success almost seems negatively correlated with how intensely people behave in lectures. Maybe a load of the people sitting at the front, with their speech recorders and nicely set out notes take all these measures due to their insecurity about their own abilities, while a load of the people at the back appear more relaxed because they just enjoy listening to the lecturer and taking all the interesting information in, because they don't need lectures to become as intense as their study/don't want health sci to become even more intense by sitting with the "front row people", or because they just know they'll do well without intently writing notes?

I can almost see someone producing a psychology PhD thesis on "the behaviour of HSFY students when choosing seats in the St. David street lecture theatre".

Ah, sometimes I almost miss health sci.

Key word there being almost.

:D :p

Hey guys, I've finally joined this thing after long time lurking.

Did you go to Carrington greenglacier? Do you know how many got into med?

On the topic of health sci weirdos, there was always this guy in my exam rooms who at there before the test solving a flippin Rubiks Cube. That really used to annoy me, it was like he was showing off his intelligence or something. And same SASOL, I used to hate it when everyone had their notes out just before exams. Honestly isn't going to help!

HOLY SH*TTTTT!!!! ITS A GIRL!!!!! I swear there are no Otago girls on here!:heyes::heyes::drool::heyes:

Lol seriously though, welcome Toorak(y) You have ventured to the dark side.
Hmm yes a mate of mine at carrington said that heaps got in from there, like 50 or something crazy like that?
Man the rubiks cube dude must have ground your gears, I had a girl like that in my PHSI lab except she did all the calculations in her head. Kinda freaky lol and a tad intimidating.:bored:

I could never tell where the other halls sat in lectures to be honest, I knew they sat together just didn't know who was where haha. Where did the carrington people sit greeny? (can I call you greeny, greenglacier? I will anyway lol)

Yep, I went to Carrington (did you?). Don't know how many got into med, just know of a LOT. Case in point - 12 health scis on my floor aiming for med. So far I know of 6 definately in, and I haven't heard from all of them (I reckon at least one of those I haven't heard from will get in also).

Yeah about notes before exams, for me it actually makes things worse. The ONLY time I did it was when I read over my answer to the pre-released question in the epi exam a couple of times before going in (and I wrote it down soon after). You just have to not let it bug you. Before all tests/exams there are two pieces of music I always listen to - amongst other things it means that I can calm down and ignore the people freaking out.

EDIT - SASOL, call me what you like (within reason). "greenglacier" is just a cover for my real name and has no real significance for me. :p

Most of the Carrington people seemed to sit on the Cumberland street side of St. David, in the block of seats at the very back of the theatre and some of the seats in front of that empty space between the rear entrances.

Oh so thats where you guys sat! I'll come to expect a large group of you in lectures this year I take it^_^

It's kinda sad though if everyone sticks with their hall groups though, isn't it? I really want to get to know heaps of people outside of Selwyn.

Yup the ones at the back who are more relaxed are also a lot more confident. They know they don't need to be anal about making sure they've got every lecture perfectly recorded and they have all the correct highlighters and that they've got everything written down haha.

You could try do some sort of case-control study and look at the odd's ratio of sitting at the back vs the middle or front if you got into med or not  Results would be pretty interesting. Or find the relative risk of getting into med haha.

As for me I sat row 7, 3 seats in, for every single lecture haha. That's because sitting in row 7 meant the screen was at eye level, and 3 seats in means the screen is straight ahead  Talking about nerdy... Didn't sit with mates at my hall. I'm not sure where they sat actually...I think at the back.

Welcome Toorak! Congrats on getting into med :)

Carrington always has a crazy number getting into med. Would've been so cool to have gone to Carrington but I got rejected :(

The upside of having only 2 other people from your hall getting into med is that you're forced to make new friends in med haha. By the end of the year you'll be quite cozy with your tutorial groups, and everyone in a stream will know everyone else in that stream pretty much.

Didn't notice anything like that personally but have heard of such cases. That's why they've got the pass/fail/distinction system in place this year to encourage people to grow out of that childishness and enjoy learning and develop camaraderie! :)
