Questions about Chemistry and Physics

Sorry Stuart. I did ask but I'm kinda seeking further advice. I think I can still take Physics but the concepts just seem so hard based on a workbook of one of my friends. And @frootloop, thank you for your advice, it genuinely makes me feel better as i don't understand physics very well

I see. So, what is the situation with your classes? I remember the conversation with you. Are you still taking English as you wished? What about physics? Have you dropped it yet?

Yeaaah :( I dropped Physics. I really want to take it though, it just looks hard and mathematical and I'm wondering if I should talk to the deans again as soon as possible about retaking it. I'm really loving all of my subjects so I don't wanna drop any of them.

In health sci, as long as you know how to use the formulas, it's really just plugging in numbers. I would say it's easier than L3 NCEA which required you to understand the concepts more. (edit: if you were aiming for Es)

Hi,

My advice is still the same as before. If you are willing to take it six subjects, go for it. Do what you want to do. I am sure you will be able to convince your teacher in charge or whatever.

Good luck.

You're so nice! I'm not sure if I'll do the work though. You think it's okay to take it but not sit the exams at the end of year if I don't wanna?

Hi,

If you are considering NZ universities/polytechnics only, you can to that. As I said before, if you are only looking at Otago, that could be a great option.

Also, in PHSI, you get to take a double-sided cheat-sheet into the final exam. I just wrote step-by-step instructions for every possible calculation question, so I barely even had to understand them.

If you just make a really sweet cheat sheet, and then do lots of practice questions using it, then you'll be just fine in physics.

It's chemistry you have to worry about haha

You guys think it'll be okay to catch up on Physics after not doing level 3? if I put the time and effort into it, would I be at least somewhat okay?

Compared to what?
Oh sorry, wrong phrasing. Which will be the "more" useful subject for OLY1 or HSFY? Classics or English? I'm taking classics this year purely out of interest, but i dont know if it'll benefit me. I'm fairly good at both English and Classics so I don't know which to drop if they dont let me take 6 subjects, but which subject is more likely to benefit me more in OLY1 or HSFY?

I don't think either will make a difference, so I would do the one that you enjoy more.

Thanks :p that's quite comforting.
Also, anyone from Auckland who's done Biomedical science, is the physics paper closer to level 2 or 3?

Closer to Level 2 - hardly anything from Level 3 was in the paper. There is also a lot of new content as well, but it isn't too bad and they are pretty kind in the questions that they ask in the tests/exam.

Are you sure? People say that if you've done level 3 as well, you're likely to find the physics paper pretty cruise-y. My reason for wanting to take level 3 physics is because it's in 2 of the 3 pathways that you can go to in order to try for medicine. I'm not so good at physics, so it'd be a relief to not take it, but I'm just not sure if I can catch up with it after not taking it for a year? Would taking level 3 at least put me in a good position for physics in Bio med?

Hi,

You are focusing way to much on trying to get ahead. I still stand by my advice. Hasn't school started yet? You should just go with it now.

I have provided two of the most popular perspectives on this matter. I would be surprised if someone came up with something completely different.

So should I or should I not take Physics? The Otago website says also that they strongly recommend taking physics at level 3. The studentsreviewcourses website says that 75% of the physics paper in Biomed is NCEA level 3. I'm so stuck on what to do. School's started but you can still change subjects. I don't knoooooow.

Hi,

Are you saying you want someone to make then decision for you?

That's because of the overlaps and the fact that more students (who do well) have done NCEA level 3. - My opinion.

The main thing is that Level-3 will provide more opportunities for your experience in physics. It's not so much the content. It's the practice you get.
