Quick Questions Thread #2: 2018-2019

Post for me: For USYD Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Dental Medicine, what's the criteria? The website says that there's a "written assessment and a panel discussion". Is the written assessment like UWA's spatial reasoning test and is the panel discussion like CSU's panel interview? Or is it MMI?

Also does USYD Dent/ UNSW Med require strange preferencing like CSU Dent (must be #1 pref to receive an offer)?
USYD Dent:
- no mention of when interview invites are received (probably when ATARs are released on 14th Dec)
- assessment day on 17th Dec
- offers released on 20th Dec.

UNSW Med
- interview invites are released on the 14th Dec
- Interviews are on 17th-21th Dec
- Offers released on 11th Jan

CSU Dent only requires you to place it at number one if you want an early UAC offer outside the first main UAC offer round in Jan (in the same way WSU Med do for rural applicants). UNSW Med does not participate in these early rounds. I have no idea how USYD Dent works.

Thanks a lot. I'll put USYD Dent first which has early round offers (I think). Then change preferences and put UNSW Med after Dec 20th.

I've just been lucky enough to receive an offer from CSU for dentistry (non-standard, not rural, interstate), but the email says that due to limited places in the course, I need to accept this offer within 7 days. There was no mention of making it my first preference or any other offer rounds.

I really want to study med, but those offers won't be out for another few weeks. If I accept this offer, will I still be eligible for an interstate interview at JMP and any offers through SATAC, VTAC, or QTAC?

Yes, you can accept this offer within the 7 days and then attend your JMP interview and cross your fingers for a JMP offer in January which will mean you can withdraw (without penalty) from CSU dent. SATAC, VTAC, and QTAC are completely seperate to UAC so you don't have to worry about those at all.

Also, if I've understood correctly, CSU Dent was NOT your first preference in UAC as of this morning? Just wondering as it seems the University itself have been instructing people it needs to be in order to get an early round offer, so if this isn't the case, that's useful information for us. Thank you, and congrats!

Thanks for the advice and the congratulations :D

Yep, you've interpreted that right. In fact it was (and still is) my 5th preference. I was verbally told after my interview that if successful, I'd receive an email with a conditional offer telling me to make CSU my first preference, but this was not what I received this morning. This had me a little confused as well.
I'm not sure if this is because I have my finalised GPA while the majority of applicants are still waiting for an ATAR.

That your offer isn't conditional would definitely be because you have a finalised GPA, but the whole telling people CSU dent has to be your first preference to get an early offer is clearly a fib, so thanks for inadvertently confirming that!!

To help us understand more of the process can you log into your UAC application see what offer status code is showing for your 5th pref CSU?

Maybe what CSU tells interviewees is different? I don't remember being told about having to keep CSU as pref #1 when I was there. Maybe they only told interviewees who were hoping for an early round offer.

A bit off topic, but any recommendations for uni laptops on a budget for med/ dent? Last posts I found were from a few years back. My MacBook Air from 5 years ago has died on me. I've heard of Chromebooks / surface too.

I can't seem to find any offer status code on UAC. Each of my preferences has the message 'Eligible - subject to being competitive' in a little box. The link from the email goes directly to CSU's website to accept, decline, or defer offers

Thanks for checking. What should normally happen is CSU first informs UAC of you being made an offer. UAC then checks, if it's your #1 pref they change the status from "Eligible" to "Offer made", and only then CSU sends you the offer email.

If you have other prefs above it the CSU status should change to "Qualified but Pending".

Since the status has not changed from "Eligible" it looks like CSU went ahead with sending you the offer email without interaction with UAC. JCU is like that too with their med offers.

Hey, would someone be able to confirm if what I understood is correct?
I applied for Griffith through UAC.
Having Griffith as first preference on UAC website wouldn’ stop me receiving offers for the NSW unis that are lower preferences on 6 Jan? Because Griffith offer will be released on 16 Jan?
Thanks!

Just an FYI that the first UAC round in Jan is the 11th, not the 6th (just so you’re not panicking when nothing happens on the 6th!).

I’m actually not sure what having Griffith as number one will do, so I’ll leave that to someone else to answer.

Thank you LMG! for that!
Looking at all the different dates got me confused..

Aside from Griffith, is it correct that I can receive an offer from a uni that I qualified even if it was lower preference in case I didn’t qualify for the higher preferences for January round?

Hey Cocomon, if you qualify for Griffith then you should receive an offer from them in the first UAC round (those applying through QTAC just have to wait a bit longer ;) ) but there is no advantage to applying through either TAC apart from UAC coming out a little earlier. In the event you don't qualify for Griffith, then you'll receive an offer from your next eligible preference.

I had my CSU dent preference as #1 and accepted it, does that mean i can change my UAC preferences now and hopefully get a JMP offer considering it was an early round CSU dent offer?

Thank you Crow!! That's good to know!
I assumed Griffith offer will be released as QTAC schedule.
Saving a few days of waiting is definitely an advantage for me....!

Hey guys, Im applying as a tertiary transfer from health and medsci to med at Adelaide. I had my interview last week (fingers crossed for that), but had a question regarding subquota stated in 2019 admissions guide.

It states - Higher education 'At least 20 places in the MBBS are reserved for students who come through the Higher Education Pathway. A minimum of 10 places from the Higher Education quote will be allocated to applicants from the Bachelor of Health and Medical Sciences and Bachelor of Health and Medical Sciences (Advanced)'

This wasn't present in the 2018 admissions guide, and was added in for this years intake. Because I am studying health and med sci, do I meet both sub-quotas or just the first one? Also, will this actually have a substantial effect for transfers? Usually the top 10-15 who do manage to transfer get really high scores anyway, and often receive an offer without the sub-quota. Will the addition of the sub-quota mean there will an overall increase in the number of transfers? I've emailed admissions at Adelaide about a week ago but still had no reply.

Cheers for any help!

In the context of this pathway there aren't two sub-quotas for you to be in both. It's one quota of 20+ places with a sub-quota of 10+ for Bachelor of Health/Medical Sciences. An example is say there are 22 places available for this pathway, if the top 22 include more than 12 non-HMS then they are limited to 12 (to keep at least 10 for HMS), meaning some HMS below 22nd will get a place. Otoh if the top 22 include more than 10 HMS they all get a place in that order, no "expelling" of any HMS.

Some weird things happened with UAdel interviews this year, and this confirmation of defined subquotas actually helps explain things.

We noted several tertiary transfer applicants reporting interview invites with UMATs below previous years, and also well below what school leavers were reporting this year. I’d guess this means the subquota has been increased this year, which is handy for tertiary transfer students. The terms “at least” are interesting, too, as this leaves the door open for UAdel to take more than 20 if they want to. It will be interesting to hear how many they end up accepting in total.

Given the wording, I’d think you’re in the running for one of all 20 (plus) spots on offer, given your undergrad. Someone in a different degree would only be eligible for the non Health/MedSci spots.

Best of luck!
