I think she was from general admissions, yeah fair enough. It might be best just to put it as first preference just incase. Thanks!

You will definitely have time to change preferences before the main UAC round if CSU Dent isn’t your first preference so that’s what I’d be doing (an offer before Christmas would be nice!). Just keep an eye on pertinent dates so you don’t get caught out.

ETA: it looks like you’ve got until midnight on Jan 6th.
Key dates - UAC

Ah i see, I'm hoping to get a different offer but a CSU offer would be fantastic either way! Thank you! would you mind PMing me?

I never realised that you replied doh!
I'm not from NSW. So do I still change my preferences asap to CSU as #1 (for Dec 6 offers)? Then keep it as #1 until late Dec/ only after I FINISH enrolling?
Also, do any other unis (JCU med, UWA dent and med, Monash) have this strange preferencing? Where we need to put them as #1 for an early offer?

The usual process is after receiving an offer you accept/enroll then you are free to move something else into 1st pref. We don't know why CSU says you have to keep CSU 1st pref until late Dec. Need to ask them.

(Note to WA/TISC applicants): Don't do this if you are not truly keen on the pref that you move to first. Unlike the other TACs, when TISC gives you a 2nd round offer they automatically withdraw the earlier offer to give to another applicant.

Also, do any other unis (JCU med, UWA dent and med, Monash) have this strange preferencing? Where we need to put them as #1 for an early offer?

This is from the TACs not the unis. The uni (except JCU) doesn't give an offer straight to you, they inform UAC you have qualified for a place, then UAC checks if you have another course at higher pref. If you do UAC withholds that offer until the higher pref's outcome is known.

Thanks a lot! So I interviewed at UWA this week for dent & med but I haven't gotten a Curtin interview (hopefully in the next round next year). I currently have Curtin #1, UWA Med #2 and UWA Dent #3. So should I move UWA Med to #1, UWA Dent #2 and Curtin #3 to maximise my change of receiving an offer before next year? Does this impact the NOTE to TISC applicants you have above?

If you are from WA it doesn't really matter. Leaving Curtin at #1, when offers come out on 21 Dec if you get one or both UWA offers TISC will give it to you since their records show you were not selected for interview you do not qualify for a Curtin place. (Exception: if you do receive a Curtin invite before 21 Dec for the January round TISC might withhold the UWA offer, I don't think that will happen before 21 Dec though).

It'd work the same if you make Curtin #3 for now then move it back to #1 for the January round. If you get an interview then and qualify for a place this Curtin offer will void the UWA offer. You don't get to keep both like with the other TACs.

EtA: You seem to be posting for two persons; it gets quite confusing for us to work out the answers for you since we need to base on more background info than what you give in one particular post.

Hey, I'm kinda new here and just wondering how this would work. My main preference is WSU, and from what you're saying, I can put CSU first to possibly receive an early offer, then shift it before Jan 6th. My question is if I do get an offer from CSU before Jan round 1, should I accept it or? Thanks in advance

You must accept and/or enroll in CSU before moving it out of 1st pref. Otherwise it would not be recorded by CSU and they could offer the place to another applicant.

If/when receive a WSU offer and accept it, you can withdraw from CSU without penalty.

Awesome, thanks!

May seem like an odd question, but what is the process of entering undergrad med after your ATAR expires (i.e. after the two years they are valid for)?

If you have tertiary study then you apply as a non-standard and generally schools will look at your GPA rather than ATAR (there are a few exceptions for the NSW unis). If you have no tertiary study, some schools e.g. UQ won’t let you apply at all after you’ve left school (they don’t take gap year student applications), and others will let you apply only for a certain period of time (I think for Monash it is 3 gap years before you can no longer apply as a school-leaver student for example). Overall the process is still the same, it’s just that for some unis you will no longer be eligible due to having started tertiary study and/or unis not accepting applications from gap year students.

Hey I might be completely wrong, but Macquarie MD program offers an undergraduate pathway too, right? Is that guaranteed entry or do we need to sit GAMSAT/interview before beginning MD? Is it too late to apply as I only found out today about Macquarie even offering medicine (living under a rock obv)

I don't think Macq offers guaranteed entry. If you are a Macq undergrad student (of certain courses?) you get bonus marks for Macq MD via Gemsas. And it's full-fee at ~60k/year * 4 years. Check in the Gemsas guide.

It’s not an undergraduate pathway per se, but 20 interview spots for graduate entry are reserved for Macquarie Clinical Science students + they get a 3% bonus applied to their weighted GPA: MQU Program Finder
You still need to sit GAMSAT.

As A1 pointed out the course is full fee (meaning no guaranteed internship after paying 250k) and half the clinical training will be spent in India - not somewhere I would be aiming to study medicine personally.

Hi, looking at UQ's website, they say that you get two bonus points for medicine if you band 6 4u maths, does that mean that with an ATAR of 98+ before the bonus points and a high UMAT I'd be guaranteed a spot?

Yes, that’s correct. Assuming your UMAT is above the cut off, a 98+ ATAR would be bumped above the academic requirement.

Added by A1: I understand you only need to do/pass 4U/Maths C for the 2 bonus rank points, band 6 is not a requirement.

Hey,

I just have a question about UAC. Since all the interviews I have done (or hopefully get an interview spot in @UNSW) have offers in the first January round, would it be alright to put something else on my UAC preferences for the December round so I'm not left offer-less if everything goes wrong? That's what JMP recommended to us today, so I'm presuming there's nothing wrong with it?

Thanks!

You can move something else into prefs #1 & #2 for the December round then later move the med/dent prefs back to where they were. But you should not take any med/dent prefs out of the list to make room for the something else. If taken out you may not be able to put med/dent prefs back in.

Hey everyone thank you for your help so far. I had another question but I wasn’t exactly sure where to post it so im just going to post it here as I couldn’t find any information in the other threads. So i’ve finally finished high school and now is the time to start thinking about uni and the things I will need to buy, one of them being a laptop. I’m assuming I will be needing my laptop for taking notes in class or accessing other websites etc. I just wanted some advice on whether or not it would be useful to purchase a touch screen/convertible laptop as opposed to just a normal laptop. Would the touch screen function be advantageous for quickly annotating or drawing diagrams in lectures? I do have a laptop currently that I would be willing to bring to lectures but its not touch screen so I just wanted some advice on what laptop/device would be best suited for uni next year in lectures and just for general use. Just for summary I am going to be doing biomed at auckland uni next yr thanks!

Do you (or did you) use a touchscreen much when you studied at school?

If not, then you're unlikely to need a touchscreen at university, and the premium you end up paying for a touchscreen on a student laptop ends up being much higher.

Importantly at university you'll be wanting something with good battery life.

Post for me: For USYD Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Dental Medicine, what's the criteria? The website says that there's a "written assessment and a panel discussion". Is the written assessment like UWA's spatial reasoning test and is the panel discussion like CSU's panel interview? Or is it MMI?

Also does USYD Dent/ UNSW Med require strange preferencing like CSU Dent (must be #1 pref to receive an offer)?
USYD Dent:
- no mention of when interview invites are received (probably when ATARs are released on 14th Dec)
- assessment day on 17th Dec
- offers released on 20th Dec.

UNSW Med
- interview invites are released on the 14th Dec
- Interviews are on 17th-21th Dec
- Offers released on 11th Jan
