Quick Questions Thread #2: 2018-2019

Are you two marks under the cut-off with bonuses or without? You’re eligibile for bonus points (that will inflate your ATAR) if you did LOTE or Maths C (or equivalent). Regardless, there won’t be any problems with leaving your preferences as they are - if you aren’t eligible for your first preference you’ll just be passed down and receive an offer for the next preference that you’re eligible for.
Thank you for your reply :)
I'm two marks under with bonus points
So do you think it's best to just put this course as the first choice?

Ah, that’s unfortunate. Unless you want to add another course to your preference list (I.e. remove whatever your top preference is to add another one), I don’t see any reason for you to change them - so long as you’re confident that you’re eligible for at least one of the preferences in your list as it stands.

This may be a bit of a silly question but if I do (somehow) manage to get an offer for Undergrad Medicine from Monash, approximately how long do I have to accept it?
During that week 14-21st I will be out in a remote area with little to no service whatsoever on my phone and no wifi.

I’d hate to miss out on a spot because I was away!

I'm not sure, but are you with Telstra? If not, if you have an unlocked phone you can buy their $10 SIM travel card and it gives you reception pretty much anywhere (make sure you check that it covers the place you're going, though!) Might be useful for other things, too. :)

I wouldn't worry too much, I'm sure they'd give you at least a week to accept it, and offers come out on the 16th.

Is it possible that you could nominate a proxy to accept the offer for you on VTAC?

Locked phone unfortunately.

This seems to be the best way to do it.

Cheers guys!

Hey guys, I remeber last year people were able to put there details on unsw identify manager to see if they could create an account, if they could it means they most likely were gonna get an offer. Is it the same case this year aswell? And how early can you do it to check?

I think these people were reporting being able to do it the day before (or maybe, at the very most, two days before) UAC offer release. Not everyone could do it, though, so don't panic if you can't! Also, it's highly possible they've fixed the glitch that allowed this.

Hey guys. I didn't try hard enough in the HSC and got an ATAR of 94.85. I was accepted for EAS but even that couldn't save my ATAR and I got declined in UNSW. My plan B was to get into BSc/BAdvStu (Adv) in USYD and through the GAMSAT transfer into Grad Med.
I don't know if this is a common question but I couldn't find it on the forum. Do the majors/minors I choose affect my chances of entry to grad med? If I'm denied into Grad Med I would like to work in the fields of physics so is there any harm in choosing it as a major?
I'm in the enrollment process now and I'm really confused. Thanks!

Of the 11 med grad schools UoM and UQ will require a few biomed prereqs in your undergrad degree. The rest don't care, you can choose any majors/minors you want. All the best.

Alright, thank you!

Are there any majors or units in USYD that better prepare for the grad med course? I'm still unsure at what to choose but I guess that's my own problem haha

For this you will get better answers from the PagingDr forum since there are few members here with grad entry/med experience. Very briefly some people say certain Sc units can help with the GAMSAT, and the first 1.5 years of the MD course is intense thus hard work for those who have not done biomed units in their undergrad.

Do physios diagnose? What other allied health professions have a diagnostic role?

Yes. Also (at a minimum and based on my experience, so there would absolutely be others) psychologists of all specialisations (ie. clinical, neuro, health, etc), dieticians, speech pathologists, occupational therapists, and podiatrists.

Thanks a lot. I assume that they can also prescribe medication since they can diagnose?

Oh, pharmacists can probably also diagnose.

And no, that’s not the case. If you’re diagnosing someone with, say, an intellectual disability (as I have done, to provide an example) there’s no prescribing of medication required. Not all diagnoses can (or should) be treated with medication.

As far as I’m aware, prescribing rights are only given to doctors, nurse practitioners, dentists and vet surgeons.

With some moves towards (or at least vigorous conversations about) pharmacists and clinical psychologists being able to write subsequent prescriptions for a restricted set of medications already initiated by a doctor, the above is also my understanding of current prescribing rights. I think (correct me if I’m wrong) NPs can only write subsequent prescriptions.

How do pharmacists diagnose? Is it when patients ask what over the counter medication is suitable for their symptoms?

Yes I remember getting a script from my NP. Probably was subsequent but I can't remember now.

Pharmacists would not be diagnosing medical conditions. Providing medications for symptoms are not the same thing as a diagnosis which a medically qualified individual would be performing.
