Some unis use predicted ATAR for first round interview invites, but definitely not all of them. I believe JMP and WSU don’t, and UNSW won’t be from this year onwards? A1 is likely to have a better idea.

I remember the year I applied WSU asked for predicted ATAR but have since stopped using it. So have UNSW. That leaves just JCU, without a predicted you wait for JCU's 2nd round using your actual.

Oh there are also UWA & Curtin but they interview interstate students (most here on MSO) in January after actual ATARs have been released.

Sorry to digress but in following up the La Trobe thing:
The course is for rural students at either Albury-Wodonga or Bendigo campuses. 15 students will get the DM on enrolment (still to be decided how this will be done but they will do an interview and I expect ATAR will also count – the higher the ATAR the better the chance of getting one of these 15 places). The other 15 will be admitted into DM after completion of the degree and these students will need a min WAM of 75 . In total 30 students will go from B Biomedicine Sciences (medical) into DM at Shepparton. We have no idea how big the Biomedical Sciences (Medical) course intake will be as its new course but we hope it is very popular. However if less than 30 meet the pre-requisites the intake will reflect that which will be a pity as it is a great pathway and we do want it to succeed

This indicates with more certainty the Biomed cohort will comprise some students with a guarantee and many without.

Regarding "still to be decided how this will be done but they will do an interview and I expect ATAR will also count" - LaTrobe has published on its website
Admission Criteria: rural RA2-5 + ATAR 85 raw + Personal statement + MMI interview. Place offers are based on 50% SES-adjusted ATAR, 50% MMI & assessment of rural connectedness from Personal statement.

Hey all,

My careers counsellor at school said that I shouldn't apply to too many med schools around Australia because they don't like it - i.e. they see it as you not making up your mind on where you want to go. I'm basically just trying to maximise my chance on getting in somewhere since I'm willing to go interstate for med. Is it true that they don't like people applying around the country?
I've applied to Monash, Flinders, Adelaide, UNSW, Griffith (provisional) , UQ (provisional) , WSU and JMP.

Cheers

I don't think that's true for most universities GottaGo, if anything it would be the opposite - but I truely don't think they pay much attention to where else you apply. It's advisable to have backup options. If you decided you wanted to go to UNSW (for example) and applied NOWHERE else, I tend to think they'd see that as being incredibly short sighted.
Med is stupidly competitive to get into, there's nothing wrong with applying to multiple institutions - I'd actually recommend it!

Like Beth mentioned, it's definitely fine to apply far and wide. In fact, most (all?) unis won't actually know where else you've applied unless you specifically tell them during interviews (and in my experience, that never comes up as a question), as the only place you list preferences/multiple unis is in your admissions centre application (UAC, VTAC, etc).

In addition to where you've already applied, you could add UWA (provisional) and Curtin through TISC, UTAS via a direct application to the Uni, and JCU through QTAC.

Really? I applied for every single undergrad med in AU

Yeah, that's what my counsellor said, but I wouldn't take it for truth. Like LMG and Beth said, it's probably better to apply for all of them to get yourself the best chance of getting an offer. ]

Yeah, I've considered the unis in WA and JCU, but I decided I would prefer to take the post-graduate route rather than move that far. Sounds funny, but I don't think I'd be able to do such as far distance from home (Melbourne). And since I'm not a tassie resident, I thought that I'd give uTAS a miss because of the super high UMAT requirement. I might still apply if UMAT is all good though :)

For UQ's 'adjusment factors' (really a rebrand of bonus points xd), are the bonus points also for students doing 3unit Math in HSC or is it only for 4unit Math in hsc. Would be a shame if a 98.xx atar cuts me out.

4 unit maths is the equivalent of mathematics C I believe and so I assume that is the minimum to get the bonus.

I can't put in Bond university because the search parameters apparently do not give any result when I type in "Medical Studies" and or put in Bond. When I try to put in the course code, it gives no result.

Also, my application keeps timing out and I keep having to log back in. I have tried both Chrome and Internet Explore. What do I do?

Not sure about the application bit, but I am pretty sure Bond Uni doesn't open their applications until much later. This is to let all the other unis take up students and then a portion of the rest that did not get offers usually apply to bond. hopefully someone can confirm.

Bond applications go through a separate cycle to most other QTAC courses, because the Bond course doesn't start until several months later than most other courses. I believe you can't add Bond to your preferences until after QTAC first round offers are released in mid January.

Thanks. That's strange, though.

Is it true that during your first year of uni you can resist the UMAT and Unis will treat you like a high school leaver ?
If you’re referring to competing with school leavers for a spot - well that depends on the uni
You’ll be a non standard applicant but some unis don’t have a quota for non standard

Wasn't sure about where to put this but my question is about the application process for JCU. Do we have to send the application by 30th September or do they have to receive it by then (meaning that we have send it a few days before)? I was under the impression that if the post office stamps it with the time and date then it shouldn't be an issue as you can't really control when JCU receives your mail, but I'm getting some conflicting info from my mates.

I also just wanted to see what people thought about my situation. I'm doing biomed at melb uni with a guaranteed ffp place in med. I sat the umat this year because I find maintaining my gpa too stressful (even though I've done fine thus far) and I just don't have the patience to wait 2 more years to start med. If I wait however and sit the gamsat, there's a chance I could get a csp spot at melb which I'd prefer to JCU. I don't really know, given the possibility this might happen, if it is worth it to apply to JCU. What do people think?

Thanks in advance!
