Quick Questions Thread #2: 2018-2019

I also just wanted to see what people thought about my situation. I'm doing biomed at melb uni with a guaranteed ffp place in med. I sat the umat this year because I find maintaining my gpa too stressful (even though I've done fine thus far) and I just don't have the patience to wait 2 more years to start med. If I wait however and sit the gamsat, there's a chance I could get a csp spot at melb which I'd prefer to JCU. I don't really know, given the possibility this might happen, if it is worth it to apply to JCU. What do people think?

Thanks in advance!
Definitely worth applying to JCU if your personal and financial circumstances would allow you to be able to move because future entry into UniMelb would be subject to doing well in the interview (if FFP) /GAMSAT and interview rather than just your GPA so it’s not a true guarantee . All the best .

Wasn't sure about where to put this but my question is about the application process for JCU. Do we have to send the application by 30th September or do they have to receive it by then (meaning that we have send it a few days before)? I was under the impression that if the post office stamps it with the time and date then it shouldn't be an issue as you can't really control when JCU receives your mail, but I'm getting some conflicting info from my mates.
Just needs to be time stamped by the 30th :)

Do decimal points matter at this stage? Do the units have access to our non-rounded UMAT scores and could that explain why some candidates with similar scores to successful candidates do not get interviewed. (assuming it is a UMAT only uni)

Universities do have access to your non-rounded scores. I remember in one year, someone missed out on UQ even though they were right on the cut off.

Is it true that during your first year of uni you can resist the UMAT and Unis will treat you like a high school leaver ?

WSU will still use your ATAR if you don't have a completed degree (they'll actually use whichever out of your GPA and ATAR is the most beneficial to you). So in that sense they 'treat you like a high school leaver'. But I think that's the only uni where that happens once you complete 1.00 FTE years of tertiary study.

Yeah, and we suspect this was also the case with UAdel last year or the year before where two applicants with the same UMAT had different interview invite outcomes.

As a non-standard applicant who's currently second year in a university degree already, what universities in Australia other than WSU/Newcastle can I apply to? I understand that I am ineligible to apply to UTas, UAdelaide, Curtin etc. are there any other that I'm eligible to but missed?

The 4 non-standard UMAT unis are JMP, WSU, UNSW and Curtin. Curtin you require a completed degree though. There is also JCU, which doesn't use UMAT but bases interview offers off GPA and the written application. There is also Bond, based off GPA to get to the initial PQA stage. Other than that, you're looking at grad unis through the GAMSAT pathway. Good luck :)

Bond is also another option if your financial means allow you, however for the vast majority it is not possible.

Also Bond if you’re in the financial position to meet the tuition requirements.

Thank you all so much for the quick clarification. I understand now that with my scores of 59, 56, 57, I'm probably best looking at JMP for an interview and trying hard to get in a good application to JCU.

Hoping for you that the JMP cutoff doesn't go back up to 60 this year! You may be in luck :)

Does anyone know how UNSW scales ATAR according to GPA? My ATAR was 99.5o and I've maintained a GPA of 7.0 (in my third year of uni).

Hi mia, I've stolen this pic from a post made by A1 a while ago. I don't think that the GPA to ATAR conversion process is very transparent, but this document would indicate that your ATAR equivalent would remain at 99.5. Have you considered graduate entry medicine as well?

hi everyone! I don't know if here is the right place to post but I'm currently in my 2nd year of university and I'm having difficulty finding all the actual universities who allow nonstandard entry for medicine
some people told me Curtin may take but searching online i couldn't find anything reliable or recent
same for Adelaide and Tasmania
ill really appreciate if someone gets back to me with an updated list of all the unis who take non school leaver students

thank you so much! xx

Curtin is only if you have a degree or are in your final year. Adelaide is only for those currently at Adelaide for an internal transfer. The non standard unis are UNSW, JCU, JMP and WSU. Bond too if you can afford it. UTAS no longer takes non-standards.

Hi everyone, I hope I’m posting in the right place.

My UMAT/ATAR results are as follows:

Overall UMAT Score: 168
Section One: 56
Section Two: 56
Section Three: 55
Overall Percentile Rank: 77
Estimated ATAR/GPA: 97.50
Preferred University: uTas
Course Type:
Medicine
Application type: Gap year
State: Tas
Rural: yes
Indigenous Applicant: no
GWS: nope
Other Bonuses: nope

I recently discovered that I classify as a rural applicant to uTas. I currently am overseas and it is hard to have access to a computer and therefore it isn’t very simple to write up my rural application, and I won’t be home until after the application is due.

I was wondering how crucial is it to apply as a rural applicant, with the scores I have? Is it worth trying to contact someone from home to fill it in for me and I’ll quickly write up the written responses myself?

Any guidance here would be greatly appreciated :)

If you want to give yourself the best chance of getting into medicine then yes , applying everywhere and making the most of your rurality is crucial .

People with the following scores got into UTAS medicine for 2018 entry:
Aus Med and Dent Place Offers 2018 - Collated Data
“70th %ile (47/55/61, 163), 98.00+, school leaver, rural
155 (61/48/47), 98.05, school leaver, rural
50th %ile, 97.00+, school leaver, rural
52/58/41, 150, 98.80, school leaver, rural, BMP”

The non-rural cutoffs for UTAS were/are much higher- in fact , non-rural people with very high ATAR/UMAT combinations which got them multiple offers at other universities missed out on a UTAS offer.

Your rural application is important so try and spend as much time on it as possible

All the best

Did you finish high school in Tasmania? And live in Tasmania for a considerable portion of your life? (ie. would you consider yourself a Tasmanian?). If so, then you may be okay without doing a rural application, but I would STRONGLY suggest you find a way to make it happen because UTAS aren’t always transparent in their requirements. If it’s the same as last year, there are only three questions with relatively small word count limits. If you can’t submit it yourself, I’d definitely be on the search for someone to submit on your behalf once you’ve provided them your responses and other info that will be required (the schools you attended, addresses you’ve lived at, etc).

Hey everyone
Just wanted to get an idea about unsw atar GPA calculation.
So using a the table A1 provided, it says that for unsw, a GPA of 6.5+ is equal to 99.5, so does that mean even if I get above 6.5 it has no difference. Like does a 6.5 and 6.75 for example both have the same effect to my current atar? (95.9)

Thanks guys

Yes, that’s exactly how we understand it to work.
