[Undergrad] UMAT 2017 Results Discussion

Actually, you only need an atar or just above 98 to boost your ATAR to 99.95 under the 5 bonus points scheme. Yes I am aware it's added to the aggregate which you can even check here. https://www.satac.edu.au/documents/2016_sace-ntcet_uni_agg_atar_conversion_table.pdf

Thanks for the good info. Whereas SATAC equates 90 aggregate to 99.95 I used 95.5 aggregate based on a UAC table, thus the aggregate gaps from 99.95 down to 99.0 or 98.0 are much larger than 5 points.

Hi LMG,

As per my previous post I got below 50 for s2 (s1-63 and s2-66) and 178 overall (89 percentile). Atar 98-99

I'm just wondering if there is any chance for me to get UQ and Adelaide Bonded (2nd round) interviews?

Also in my UAC preferences should i put UNSW before WSU since New South don't have a focus on s2 whilst WSU does?

Many thanks for the help! :)

You'll need an ATAR at 99.0 or above for UQ, but I'd think your UMAT will rule you out regardless. Last year, the bonded cut off was 181 and you have 178, unfortunately.

UAdel interview is a definite possibility. I had a friend with 87 UMAT, 96.0 ATAR who interviewed last year.

ETA: forgot this bit! You should preference the unis in UAC in the order you'd rather attend them. The unis themselves won't know what your ordering is, and if you don't qualify for an offer from one, but do from the other, then it won't matter which order they're in. The only time it'll matter is if you qualify for offers from both, have UNSW as number 1, but would prefer UWS. You'd only get the UNSW offer (though could get a UWS offer in subsequent rounds if you changed your preferences).

Overall UMAT score: 158
Section One: 46
Section Two: 46
Section Three: 66
Percentile rank: 64th
Actual ATAR: 97.45
Rural: yes
Preferred university: UNSW, Monash, adelaide
Application type: gap year
Course type: medicine
State: NSW

Question: What are my chances?

Given you're rural, it's a definite possibility. Though Monash will depend on whether they really have scrapped the 50/50/50 rule and/or whether it ever applied to rural applicants in the first place.

Earth shaking news from this > The facts about medical degree selection

"Q: Why can't the University of Adelaide reserve places for South Australians?

A: This would be unconstitutional. By law, the University must accept applications from all states and territories and cannot discriminate in favour of local students."

I have felt this way for some time but this is the first I've seen in print, by a uni no less. Now I have cause to call Monash & UTas illegal and unconstitutional haha.

Hi LMG, could you clarify the UAdel interview situation? I understand that the first round interviews are solely based on Umat scores - but this year UAdel has stated that there is only one round of interviews. Does this mean that even with a high atar (99.95) I couldn't get an interview due to a lower umat? (172 raw)? Also in the past couple of years what have been the lowest umat scores that have been offered an interview? Thanks in advance, apologies for the long question.

Previous Adelaide interviews with relatively low UMAT + low ATAR were simply due to the uni giving large UMAT bonus points to SA students and not using ATAR in 1st round invites. Now only one round but it's not clear if the UMAT bonus still continues. Quite likely not since it's been removed from the Guide and I wonder if that has something to do with the uni now calling the practice unconstitutional.

Is that a recent announcement?

Section 92 of the constitution certainly requires that there be no trade barriers.... I guess this could fall into that category. "trade, commerce, and intercourse among the States, whether by means of internal carriage or ocean navigation, shall be absolutely free"

Gosh, will there now be a class action against UTAS?

Hi A1,
I've heard that Adelaide Uni have always been saying there is only one round of interviews, although this is never the case and there has always been 2nd round. Have you heard of any changes for this year or would you predict it's going to be the same this year with second round interviews incorporating a high atar and lower umat (with the 2:1 ratio consideration).

Adelaide Guides previous years clearly described the two rounds and how interviewees were selected - one all on UMAT plus bonus points for SA students, the other ATAR+UMAT 2:1.

This year's Guide says only one round and no mention of UMAT bonus points.

Interesting. We might have to revisit all UAdel advice Mana and I have given in this thread!!

First of all, that is a ridiculous UMAT. I'm gobsmacked. Well done!

Crazy as it sounds, your score won't be enough for USyd Med. It will definitely be enough for an interview at UNSW. As for the rest of your questions, they're not really relevant to this thread, but there are probably others on this site that they would fit in, otherwise, feel free to create your own. I'm not sure that we have anyone here studying Comm/Law though...

Just confirming (due to your Singapore comment) are you an International student, or classified as local?

Assuming local for now: yes for interview to UNSW Med, no to UAdel Med as they don't take non-standards. I'm not sure for Dentistry, sorry. As for other Med options: You'd get a JMP interview. No to UTAS, probably no to UWS. If your BSc is complete, you could try Curtin. Your GPA might be a little low for JCU, but worth an application. The situation is probably the same for Bond.

ETA: Just re-read and saw you did one year of BSc, so scrap the Curtin comment (unless you did that year at Curtin, given you're in WA).

Med interviews at UNSW, Monash, UAdel, JMP, and provisional Med at UQ (bonded) and UWA.
Dentistry, I'm not too sure about, but others have asked about this so if you have a look through this thread, you'll find some useful information shared by Mana and A1.

Hey LMG and Mana and A1, realistically what umat score do you guys estimate will be the cutoff for UAdel med interview invites? They say that they will only consider umat on their medicing guide booklet with each scores weighing equally.

Law/Comm v Med is a very (very) different head space. I suggest you find some recent graduates to discuss the difference in the courses and the opportunities. To do either successfully you will need to have a passion for the program. Outrageously high marks, as you have, get you in the door. Coming out the other end is more about resilience and determination.

USyd v UNSW is a bit of a philosophical discussion with no right answer. Again talking to current students/recent grads is best. Note USYD med is a graduate program.

Given this, and given how much of a change it is from previous years, the only real answer (probably) is that we simply don't know and people are going to have to 'wait and see'. I know that's frustrating, but unless UAdel provide their own estimated cut-offs, for this first year, we aren't going to have any data to go on. We will use the information posted by UAdel applicants (who either get or don't get interviews) this year to inform people next year, but there's not much we can do right now.

Thanks LMG. Was just wondering what people's thoughts were cause im not even sure if a umat score of 83 is ever worth applying at this point given that i cant use my atar for interview selections.
