[Undergrad] UMAT 2017 Results Discussion

Yes this has been the cause of annoyance for me :D
ACER gives out the Overall score on the UMAT result card, no hiding there so all UQ has to do is ask for it.

There was a case last year where a student's aggregate was 1 less than their Overall score, likely because they had three .3s or .4s rounded down, and as a result just missed the cutoff. So sad.
That was probably me :(

Hi,
Recently finished all my applications. Can someone tell me where my best bet would be? I am a rural applicant, with a predicted of 98.40 and 72nd percentile UMAT. I applied at UNSW, UWS, UTAS, Uni of Adelaide and UQ.

Also, for Griffith Provisional Entry, is there any rural bonus for ATAR?
Thanks!

EDIT: S1: 59 S2: 46 S3: 58, from NSW

I think we should write to UQ to get clarity.

62.8: 57.2: 60.6 / (63: 57: 61) = 180.6/181

is obviously less than

62.4: 57.4: 61.4/ (62:57:61) = 181.2/180

But the first applicant get the offer instead of second one.

if you post your section scores and your state of residence then someone will be able to give you a good assessment. Also have a look at [Undergrad] - 2017-18 Med schools Selection Criteria Y12s & Non-standards if you have not had a chance.

Exact situation happened last year and Harry Warren wrote to UQ to no avail. UQ says it's written in their criteria the aggregate of the three (rounded) section scores is used, not the Overall score. They brushed away our argument that the latter is more precise.

I think in these situations the only discussion that can be had is around whether the process was followed. It is otherwise a discussion about the suitability of their process and that is entirely subjective.

You'll probably get interviews from UNSW and UAdel (as long as you did rural applications), a UTAS offer will depend entirely on your written rural application, but your scores are okay (ATAR and UMAT) when compared to last year. You'll get the rural bonus for UQ, so that should be okay, I'm not sure about Griffiths.

You will likely miss out on WSU due to your UMAT (regardless of rurality).

These could affect all people here with UMAT overall score higher than s1+s2+s3. These group of candidates should send to UQ to request for usong overall UMAT than tbeir less merit way of calaculation.

As long as UQ complete their calculations the way they say they are going to, then there's not really much people can challenge them on, especially not this year, regardless of whether it disadvantages some.

If people wanted to encourage UQ to change their calculation method entirely (which would be for subsequent years, not this current one) then they certainly could, though as biom already pointed out, selection methods are generally quite subjective and UQ would already be aware of this issue, given the number of people who have raised it with them previously. Of course, that doesn't mean the matter shouldn't be raised again, but... it's a different issue/topic to challenging UQ for doing, well, exactly what they advertise they're going to do.

UTAS APPLICANTS UPDATE

Particularly relevant for Tasmanian and interstate rural school leaver applicants. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them in the comments to the below linked thread. The update is dated and sits under the Tasmanian school leaver section.

UTAS MBBS: 2018 Entry Information

Overall UMAT Score: 193
Section One: 73
Section Two: 56
Section Three: 64
Overall Percentile Rank: 97
Estimated ATAR/GPA: 99.7
Preferred University:
UWS, UNSW, JMP
Application type: School Leaver
State: NSW
GWS: No
Other: EAS (not confirmed yet but most likely)

Is my S1+2 competitive for UWS, considering I'm non-GWS.
Also a friend of mine talked with a UNSW admissions, and they said that to be competitive for 2018 entry, you needed a UMAT of 196+. Do you think this is likely to be the case?

Oooh, your S1 + S2 is very tight for what we know of re. WSU. It could go either way, best of luck! You'll definitely get a JMP interview. As for UNSW, historically, the UMAT requirement has been a bit of a sliding scale depending on ATAR/GPA. Unless they're changing things this year, there's no single score for UMAT that can be considered competitive in isolation. Given your ATAR/UMAT combo, I'd say you're pretty safe for an interview, unless thing have changed quite a bit.

Sorry to bother again, what are my chances at UWS? Non-GWS.
S1 63
S2 65
S3 54
ATAR/GPA is fine.
Thanks.

As the selection is heavily interview based, your chances are essentially primarily on that. Your UMAT score is likely enough for an interview but only by a small margin so you'd likely have to interview in the top 20% or so to get a place.

Overall UMAT Score: 168
Section One: 56
Section Two: 53
Section Three: 59
Overall Percentile Rank: 79
Estimated ATAR/GPA: 7.0/7.0 (atm... this semester is looking pretty bad though :'( )
Preferred University: UNSW, JMP (Med) + UQ, UAdel (Dent)
Application type: Non-standard
State: NZ
GWS: No
Other: N/A

I definitely know I have no chance for this year (had 0 UMAT study), but if I maintain a 6.5+ GPA, what would be a good UMAT score for my Preferred Universities?
[Cheers for your time in advance, everybody x]

Mana must have mistaken WSU for UNSW (understandable since the hospitals are working you so hard haha).

Thots your S1+S2=128 is so borderline for WSU interview based on last year. But I think the cutoff will possibly drop a little since I've noticed the same UMAT percentile has lower Overall score this year than last. If you do get an interview we believe it's all equal 1 in ~3 chance from there.

I assume this is asking for next year?

JMP you need UMAT 60+/50/50 to get an interview. GPA 7.0 makes you eligible but doesn't give extra advantage.
UNSW uses GPA+ATAR equivalent, need to know your ATAR to see what UMAT is competitive.
UQ doesn't accept nonstandard applicants, you can only apply with GAMSAT when in final year undergrad.
Maybe someone can help re. Adel Dent as Idk much about Dent.

I'm not exactly sure what my ATAR is, unfortunately. 1A* + 3As (what I got) I think is approximately 95/96 ATAR?

Thanks for your help!

I think UQ does accept non-standard Dent applicants, as this is Dr.Potato's plan for next year. Any advice, Pot?

Oops my bad, I lumped UQ into the Med camp.
I think UQ Dent also requires Rank 99 which is around GPA 6.0 by UQ not GEMSAS grade scale, and UMAT around 86%ile. Hope DrPot can clarify.

With 95-96 ATAR a high 6s/7 GPA should bring to 98-98.5 equivalent. For this you would need UMAT 95%ile to get a UNSW interview with 10-20% admission chance, 98-99%ile for 50% chance.
