[Undergrad] UMAT 2017 Results Discussion

Unfortunately you would not be eligible for any non-standard universities in Australia. I have no idea how it works in NZ so can't advise for sure, but I imagine you won't be competitive there either. Both your GPA and your UMAT need a bit of a boost for non-standard Med. Your GWS status helps a little, but not enough in this instance. You might want to consider graduate entry Med give you're obviously already part-way through your degree.

Thank you LMG! I will try again next year in UMAT and look into graduate med too :) Thanks for your advice!

Hi I wanted to ask about how UNSW’s campus allocation works. From what I have read on the website it states;
UNSW Medicine will allocate students to campuses as follows:

  1. By descending order, applicants who have selected only one campus are allocated until places at this campus are exhausted.
  2. Applicants who have indicated either campus will be proportionally allocated to the campus available at that stage. Where possible, we will take the campus preference into consideration, but again, we cannot guarantee it.
According to this does it mean it is better to choose Kensington only as they rank you first or are you disadvantaged in any way by choosing either campus on the application form?

I think the process must be a little more complex.

Overall, applicants will be ranked from 1 to (189+25). I expect that an applicant that is ranked #1 and has indicated that they will go to either campus will get the first spot rather than being assigned their preferred (or not) spot after all lower ranked, single preference applicants have been assigned. Rank should have its privileges. Presumably those that have made a rural application will be considered first for Port Macquarie.

Note this response is based on logic not personal experience.
As the process is new(ish) it might be worth inquiring of the school @ [email protected]

Not sure if I should be posting such low scores, but got the courage to do it finally -

Overall UMAT Score: 146
Section One: 44
Section Two: 48
Section Three: 54
Overall Percentile Rank: 43
Estimated ATAR/GPA: Overseas(India) masters degree (MBA) with 58.5 % (second class). Unsure of equivalent GPA
Preferred University: JMP
Course Type:
Medicine/Dentistry
Application type: non-standard
State: NSW (Newcastle)
Rural:
don't think this is applicable in my case as all my schooling and previous degrees are from India
ATSI: n0
GWS: n0
Other Bonuses:
not aware of any

Question/s: (optional. Please be as specific as possible)

I know my UMAT score is very very low. But I need to understand what to do next. Should I consider applying anywhere this year? I am very keen for JMP but open for other places and dentistry. I am a very different non-standard applicant will all previous qualifications from overseas and now a permanent resident(hopefully citizen soon) in Australia desperately aspiring to get into Medicine. I am thinking to get into any other health and medicine degree at UON and giving UMAT again next year. Need some guidance please.

Hi there,
You could try James Cook University (JCU) next year. They offer 15-20 places for non-standard applicants and do not count UMAT. They consider GPA, Written application and interview.

As Grape mentioned, your only option with non-standard entry would be JCU (did you apply? Applications closed today). Unfortunately your UMAT score is not going to get a JMP interview this year.

You could also try Bond, but that is a full fee paying University.

A further alternative, given you have a degree, would be to sit the GAMSAT next year and apply to the graduate entry courses around Australia (of which there are many, many more places available than for non-standard entry, though obviously this rules out JMP).

ETA: welcome to MSO :D

Without knowing your MBA's GPA and that of your pre-MBA degree it's difficult to make a recommendation. If simply going by the 58.5% it's not enough to be competitive for JCU or Bond or any grad school where GPA is counted in combination.

Realistic options are:
- With the MBA you're eligible for JMP, sit UMAT next year get better than 60/50/50 to get an interview then compete on the interview.
- Get a GPA conversion and if it's >5.0 you're eligible for UQ & USyd (where the 5.0 is a hurdle so doesn't affect your chances afterwards). With UQ you compete on GAMSAT score alone, or GAMSAT score + Interview for USyd.

Thank you. I haven't applied this year. Was very unsure and couldn't think of leaving newcastle this year

Thank you. My degree is over 10 years oldSo GAMSAT may not be the option. I am thinking to start a degree and give UMAT again next year. If I score well then I can use GPA of the first year degree. Its too ambitious I know but I dont see any other pathway specially for JMP. Is that a good plan?

Do you what the ATAR requirements are for JCU? As in the cut-off.

This depends on whether you're rural, of an ATSI background, or none of the above... and I don't believe there's a hard and fast cut off, but I think you need 98.x + to be competitive if you're not rural. The lowest non-rural ATAR we had reported here last year was 98.30. Your written application is also very important.

Hi welcome to MSO. You should get interviews with UNSW, WSU(GWS), JMP, Adelaide, Curtin. If you've done a LOTE for a small ATAR bonus you might make UWA's 99+ requirement. Not sure about Monash since you are non-Vic (last year one didn't get an interview with 99.8+89%ile).

If your actual ATAR is as predicted I estimate your chance for a UNSW place offer at around 50%.

haha i'll give it my best (Y)

I have read that UQ used S1+S2+S3 instead of overall which could result in decimal error for cut UMAT cut off. Has any check with UQ or ACER to confirm this?

May be ACER should release result up to 1 decimal for UQ.

Yes, I believe this has been discussed before. UQ use your aggregate, however (IIRC) they also have up to 4 decimal places to work with (provided by ACER) when making this calculation (unlike what test takers are provided in their results slips).

ETA: A1, am I on the right track here? This is why someone right on the cut off with a lower appearing score can still get an offer? Yes? No? Am I dreaming?!

They (UQ) claimed they didn't have anything other than the rounded section scores (not even the overall score given by ACER)

Yes this has been the cause of annoyance for me :D
ACER gives out the Overall score on the UMAT result card, no hiding there so all UQ has to do is ask for it.

There was a case last year where a student's aggregate was 1 less than their Overall score, likely because they had three .3s or .4s rounded down, and as a result just missed the cutoff. So sad.
