[Undergrad] UMAT 2017 Results Discussion

Are Monash meant to email about the Dean's Rural and Indigenous lists soon?

Well, on the Monash website it says:

"All eligible timely VTAC applicants for the Medicine course will be invited by the Faculty Admissions Unit to submit additional information to confirm their eligibility requirements for the DRL."

Considering that interview invites are sent late December for Vic, DRL and DIL applicants (refer to Interview Invites and Dates 2017-18), they would probably send out emails around early to mid November? Though that's just speculation.

Hello ladies and gentleman,
Just wondering what my options are considering that I failed the umat this year heavily. For starters, I believe that I may receive an ATAR of low 99's and if not, definitely in the high 98's. For the SA universities, I am eligible for University Equity bonus points which are for financial hardships and will boost a 98.2 to 99.95 so I would say it's same to assume I can get 98.2 which for SA universities is treated as a 99.95, which gives a bit of leeway as Adelaide uni is 40% atar whereas flinders is 90% ATAR and 10% UMAT. I am currently looking into do year 13 next year but only doing the subjects of English and chem so I have the interstate options, but I really would prefer to stay within Adelaide. If I were to go to Uni next year and resit UMAT, there's a bit of a problem as the Uni of Adelaide will only accept their own students whereas flinders only accepts school leavers. This can be a problem as Adelaide does not have any worthwhile degrees that have a decent guaranteed career at the end like physio or optometry whereas Flinders does, but if I go to flinders, I rule out the option of undergrad Med in SA completely. I do not want to do any Healh Science course as what if I never pass the UMAT and end up with the degree which is of no use to me. What would you do in my situation?
Thanks

There are a number of people who complete a gap year in order to maintain their ATAR/school leaver status. It seems more common in some states than others and can be a viable option if done with purpose. But asking questions about it is a very good move.

I'm going to tag a couple of people who are familiar with the SA system and can probably help you more than me in this area :D

Well, firstly I would like to say that you're in the EXACT same boat as most of the medicine applicants in South Australia who do not end up with 99.8+ ATARs and the EXACT same boat as me. Your options as stated;

I started the health and medical sciences(advanced) degree at Adelaide before I got a later offer into medicine, and I can 100% say that the atmosphere is very competitive. Most ( and by most I mean like 90%) of people starting that degree + health and medical sciences (normal) are trying to transfer into medicine. Including applicants who are eligible to apply from any Adelaide degree, your competition is upwards of 500 people for 15 places. In this competition, finding applicants with ATARs of 99.60 or even higher who have deferred their place in medicine(interstate) is not uncommon. By saying this, I mean to say that everyone will get the GPA required to meet Medicine Cutoffs thus, the spots are solely down to the best UMAT+ Interview performances. As Mana says, past performance is the best predictor for future performance in the UMAT.

Now, the time I spent starting my degree in Adelaide, I also enrolled into year 13 and started that side by side (allowed up till the census date). I find that this stream required less work, as you have already guaranteed yourself the SA ATAR equiv of 99.95 and had more time to work on UMAT. But if you don't get the UMAT required ( Note: Cutoffs are only going upwards), you will have grandly wasted a complete year with nothing to show for it ; unless you can guarantee yourself that a repeat will provide you with a raw ATAR of 99.8+ which no one can do.

Your other option is to pursue a back up career through the University of Adelaide. By this I mean eg back up career is physiotherapy ; you can start the health and medical science degree at Adelaide, resit the UMAT and try for the non standard places at all eligible Universities. At the end of your degree, you can try for post graduate places, but if this still does not work out, you can complete the "Masters of Physiotherapy" course at flinders following your degree to be a qualified physiotherapist.

I hope this helps, good luck !

LMG! in your collated data post there are 5 Flinders non-rural offers, one was 99.85 and four 99.95 . Can you confirm whether these were their "raw" or after UES-bonus ATARs?

If they were raw I start to think Flinders does not count the ATAR bonus in their provisional Med offers, because if they do we should see offers more evenly spread out between 98.2 & 99.95

One was "not sure" (the 99.85), the 4 x 99.95 were all without bonuses.

Cheers for the post. I understand that flinders also has an Optometry course. Is it possible to choose this if it doesn't work out as I prefer this over physio. Thanks

And another question, when did you receive your atar and with what results, e.g ATAR, GPA and UMAT. Also what did you mean by started year 13 on the side of your degree? Does this give school leaver status?

Regarding flinders optometry course, I do know that it is a double degree ; Bachelor of Vision Science/ Masters of Optometry. I also do know that they take school leavers as well as higher education transfers but do not know whether they offer "Masters of Optometry" as a standalone program. This will have to be checked with the university, best by a phone call.

ATAR was 99.30 with a high 70s UMAT. Medicine offers at Bond university are released in the middle of the march, thus I had started University as well year 13 for 2-3 weeks in the hope of getting an offer. If I didn't get an offer, I would have then quickly made a decision on whether I wanted to go through the university or year 13 pathway before the census date ( last date to withdraw from university course without paying semester fees)

Where were you doing your year 13 at? Was it marden? Also, I guess that means you are doing medicine at bond university right now? And if you don't mind me asking, which year did you graduate and do you still remember which subjects you did and the scores /20 you got for them?
Thanks

Just a question but do you guys think that this years umat was harder i.e. the same UMAT percentile has lower Overall score this year than last?

Overall only lower by 1 or 2 marks which amount to about one question. But it could be the result of shaping to get the median to land on 50 marks for each section. If the median was 1-2 marks higher than last year and got dragged down to same 50 then the top end got dragged down too.

What do you mean shaping to get the median to land on 50? Sorry lol just a little bit confused

I haven't seen this year's S curves to know if it's still true but for the last 2-3 years the 50%ile (median) for each section was all on or very close to 50 marks. Now if you take a random cohort of say 200 Chem students and view their exam marks would you expect the median to be 50? Most likely not so UMAT median = 50 must be some kind of manipulation/shaping by ACER.

Here are the S curves for this year:
I have not noticed previously .... the x-axis is non-linear. A check confirms that this is the same as other years.

That is quite unusual in this sort of plot and means that the curve is very steep around the score of 50 - say the range 42-57 - if viewed on a linear scale. This means in this range a few marks can make a large difference in the percentile achieved. I am sure others understood this already and... maybe only interesting to mathematicians :)

Yes, I noticed this when I was looking at (and double checking and triple checking) what would be required to bump a score from 92nd - 96th. Certainly a lot more than a bump from 50th - 54th.

In other words: Also interesting to freaked out UTAS applicants :D

LMG! if 98th doesn't get an offer at UTAS then they don't deserve you.... and you buy me a coffee on the way to JMP!

Overall UMAT Score: 189
Section One: 63
Section Two: 73
Section Three: 53
Overall Percentile Rank: 96
Estimated ATAR/GPA: 95+ (doing IB and my school doesn't tell us our IA results, so not too sure)
Preferred University: Monash, UTas, UA, UoN
Course Type: Medicine
Application type: school leaver
State: VIC
Rural: no
ATSI: no
GWS: no
Other Bonuses: applied for SEAS
I've pretty much ruled out Monash as an option, I'd really like to go to UTas because I have family in Hobart and I'm just wondering what are my chances of getting a place at UTas with my results? I've heard that it's rare for an interstate applicant to get an offer with a 96th percentile UMAT score so I'm a bit worried
