[Undergrad] UMAT 2017 Results Discussion

Hi A1 and Biom, thanks for such a speedy reply. Your replies may help my son with that added incentive to work just a bit harder over the next 4 weeks. Those ATAR forecasts are just my realistic guesstimates. If he works harder, I mean REALLY works harder he may beat those guesses. I think he can pick up his game in Chemistry and English language and Specialist Maths could easily surprise on the upside. Once again, thanks for taking the time.

Hi,
Feeling very anxious and would like your opinion on my chances for any university please. I have applied everywhere and will accept bonded and rural too. I hope to get ATAR of 99 but my UMAT sadly was only 67. What are my chances please? thanks in advance:(

You will accept a rural offer but are you a rural applicant? If not you are not eligible for such offer. If yes then keep your hope up, 99/67%ile is a decent competitive score for rural. For example a poster here got UTas last year with 98 & sub-60 UMAT, and you can get UQ + other unis too.

Overall UMAT Score:160
Section One:46%
Section Two: 56%
section three: 57
Overall Percentile Rank: 67%
Estimated ATAR/GPA: 99.0
Preferred University: anywhere including NZ, bonded, rural
Course Type:
Medicine
Application type: school leaver
State: NSW
Rural: no

Other Bonuses: Plenty of work experience

Thanks in advance - what are my chances please?

No, Im not rural. I meant I would accept a bonded place - any chance now?

Sorry it looks like your only chance is JCU this year, or redo UMAT try again next year, or the grad/GAMSAT route.

Thanks
If I get ATAR of 99.95 does that open any doors?

Have you checked the criteria table?
99.8+ you'll get a place offer from Griffith (no UMAT no interview), 99.9+ Flinders & Melb's Chancellor's program, 99.95 USyd interview.

Oh with 99.0+ you can get into Melb's Chancellor's program too but it only takes you to a full-fee MD place.

Wait was this person an interstate or a Tasmanian school leaver? And does UTas care about the number of years someone lived in a rural area for?

This was the UTas offer > Offers UTAS 2017 (Discussion)

Had lived in Tas earlier but moved away so I think he counted as interstate. Maybe LMG! can explain better on number of years but likely it doesn't matter to the unis as long as you meet the minimum 5 consecutive years or 10 total.

Yep, can confirm the criteria to be eligible is 5 consecutive or 10 cumulative years. UTAS rural applicants are required to complete a seperate application, though, and it appears this is weighted quite heavily in the final offers. Having lived in an area for x number of years might not cut it unless you can demonstrate rural community connectedness etc. This is speculation based on the low successful UMATs last year for rural applicants when some with higher UMATs missed out.

Overall UMAT Score: 200
Section One: 75
Section Two: 65
Section Three: 61
Overall Percentile Rank: 99
Estimated ATAR/GPA: ATAR - 97.65 (2016) WAM - 76.50 (Sem 1)
Preferred University: UNSW, UWS, JMP
Course Type: Medicine

Application type: Non-Standard
State: NSW
Rural: No
ATSI: No
GWS: No
Other Bonuses: No

Just wondering whether my ATAR/WAM is too low for offers at UNSW, UWS and JMP. There seems to be heaps of posts of people with low UMAT but high ATAR and I'm kind of in an opposite situation... Hoping my UMAT can pull me through?

Your ATAR should get you over the line for WSU (needs to be 95.5+), and your UMAT is fine for there, too. For JMP you need a credit average for your uni marks. I'm not sure enough about WAM to know how you're going there, but if you're sitting on a credit average, then you should be good to go for JMP, too. They will use your second semester results as well so do you think they're going to be similar? UNSW might be the one you struggle with most for landing an interview, your UMAT will definitely help, but whether it's enough, I'm not sure. A1 might be able to clarify.

Credit in WAM is 65, I'm sitting on a distinction average at the moment but this semester *should* be higher. If my grades for each subject are compiled for a GPA I think it would be 5.75 though which might make it a bit lower in the standings? Do you know if they will convert my WAM to GPA because it will be lower if they do so. I'm really hoping for a UNSW interview because I'm there currently but obviously my academic standing will disadvantage me in that area... :(

A 200 UMAT aggregate requires an ATAR of approximately 97.0 to scrape an interview at UNSW. The higher your ATAR the better your chances of then being successful for an offer because you have more room to move (read: mess something up!). The question is (and hopefully A1 can answer this!) will your tertiary marks improve, maintain, or reduce your 97.65 ATAR.

As I understand it, for people with an ATAR around 98.0 to start with, you need a couple of HDs and the rest Ds to maintain that academic ranking. I suspect, therefore that your current tertiary marks might drop your academic ranking slightly, but it's really hard to be certain or to say by how much they will drop it (ie. will it go below a 97.0 equivalent).

Sorry I'm not really answering your question. I think you might be right on the borderline and it could go either way. Best of luck!

As LMG! said you are virtually sure of a WSU interview with equal 1 in 3 chance for a place offer, and JMP interview with 1 in 4 chance.

For UNSW 200 UMAT needs around 97.0+ to get an interview. In your case GPA ~5.75 combined with 97.6 should be quite above this. I think it might come to low-98s which with 200 UMAT gives you around 30-40% chance by my estimates.

Oh! I was think that GPA would drop it, but that's good to know it might actually bump it up!!

Best wishes to the OP :D

From the UNSW web site @ Local applicants | Medicine

"An applicant who scores a ATAR of around 98 would need to achieve results of high distinctions in some courses and distinctions in the rest in order to maintain the equivalent ATAR."

Some HDs and the rest DNs would correspond to a WAM of 6.something. It seems to me that a GPA 5.x and ATAR of 97.6 is more likely to pull down the ATAR. How much? I don't know.

Exams in 3 weeks. Good luck pulling some HDs out of the bag and best wishes for your applications.

Sorry just to clarify, are you predicting 30-40% chance for an interview or for a place for UNSW?

I also was under the impression that my semester 1 GPA equivalent could drag down my ATAR, (and obviously am hoping for a redemption this semester and maybe scrap a second round interview?) Can I ask why you think my GPA equivalent will raise my ATAR? I would love for it to obviously, just don't want to get false hope.

I was under a similar impression unfortunately :( Here's hoping to bump up the GPA equivalent!
