UoA 'What papers should I do at UoA for graduate entry' Chat/enquiries

Thanks AppleMac,

Regarding the ' At least 54 further points from ANAT 241, BIOC 223, CHEM 205, MICR 221, MICR 223, PATH 201, PHSL 232, PHSL 233'. I was thinking of CHEM205, MICR223 and 221 - What are your thoughts?

MICR's are good, PHSL233 is also a good choice if you don't mind taking a physiology paper. My friend did CHEM papers all the way through to 300 levels, really really enjoyed them, the only complaint I heard was at times the labs were a bit heavy (as you would expect with chemistry) it's good if your comfortable with chemistry though! Traditionally CHEM is probably a tad bit harder but if you enjoy it I doubt you'd do bad in it.
I don't know if this will be helpful for you, but when I was picking papers I looked at previous exams for the particular paper to get a good idea of the type of things taught to see if it really matched my interests (as sometimes the titles can be misleading).

Hey Tupac,

Did you manage to find out from Lynn whether that was the case as you mentioned, 1/2 the content in mid sem test and half the content for the final exam?

AppleMac22 Thank you for your advise it is much appreciated! Yeah I have decided to definitely not do a double major. Did you find Year 3 Pharmacology challenging? Any papers that you would suggest me taking in second and third year? Thank you again for your help :)

Rahul Panchal Do you have any advise for me in terms of third year PHarmacology because I am trying for Med and I cant really afford to be getting C's in Year 3. Thank you :)

if you think you would be fine in an interview than i suggest biomed. you have the bioscis papers but in my opinion As are easy to achieve. labs are never too bad and dont require the hours that medsci does. you could try the nutrition papers if you are looking for a easier pathway (maybe easier just because they are interesting).

I only did one pharmacology paper in year 3 (medsci 307). It was a good paper and everything you needed to know in the course was given to you. But it has weekly labs and a lab test at the end of the sem. the labs were a bit difficult (in terms of what they wanted from you). If you rae going for med the only thing i can say is what every you do, just go hard. record lecs and go through them etc. IMO you have to do quite badly to get Cs etc.

Thank you farmers and Rahul Panchal, but farmers sorry but I don't get what you mean by when you said if I would be fine in an interview i should go for biomed, like do you mean that Biomed is a lot easier? Thank you :)

Rahul Panchal thank you for your advice, I really appreciate it :)

Just a general tip. this is my opinion and not everyone would agree with it, but if you are aiming for med I would suggest you do biomed, as the stuff you learn will come in very useful when you do med (and that way the learning process during med would be a bit easier). Foe example in med you will need to know: general physiology, anatomy, pharmacology, endocrinolology, neurology etc. You can kinda cover these bases with biomed. Just my opinion though other people will have their own :)

Agreed, many of the lecture content and the same lecturers taught us in 2nd and 3rd year of med school, for eg 203 things from Graeme Finlay were taught again by him in MbChB 209 (POM I think) so there definitely is a bit of overlap

Thank you @farmers and @Rahul Panchal , but @farmers sorry but I don't get what you mean by when you said if I would be fine in an interview i should go for biomed, like do you mean that Biomed is a lot easier? Thank you :)

@Rahul Panchal thank you for your advice, I really appreciate it :)

i dont think its easy but i think its a good pathway to grad med. imo a hard working person can easily achieve As in biomed (although A+ is highly difficult in biosci papers). The A+s would be picked up in medsci papers (as they are scaled) and also can pick easy stage 1s to boost your gpa.
so yes i thnk biomed will give you the best foundation for med.
the main problem that i have noticed is lots of individuals struggling in the 2nd year mainly because of not getting into med, so would really need to remain focused as the study style will be different.

Hey guys. How hard do you reckon it is to get A+'s in Medsci 206 and 205 versus say 142. Also what are the assessments like?

I can't remember too much of the details for medsci 205, so I'll let someone else answer the specifics. In general, it requires a lot more understanding than medsci 142, 142 just went into the basics where as in 205 you'll go a lot deeper in terms of physiology. I'm guessing if you put in the effort then A+ would be achieveable, you just need to make sure you are near the top of your batch. From what I remember, it was just a mid sem test and an exam, the mid sem test was pretty hard but it was entirely MCQ. For the exam there are MCQ.SAQ and essay question which reuires you to have quite a thorough understanding to gain really high marks. I suggest you make use of the tutors that are given to you, form a group and ask any doubts from them. Lab reports are also pretty improtant, they account for 16% or something like that so need to make sure that you know what you are doing for lab reports, I suggest you ask the lab demonstrator once you finish your labs just to make sure you understand the physiology before you head off to write the reports.

Medsci 206 is probably easier than 205 IMO, a lot more interesting aswell . The assessments are two tests and an exam, the tests were doable in my year (the first test had like 85% average :o), which meant the exam was quite tricky. Lab reports again were IMO better than the 205 reports that we had to do, I think in my case I just enojyed 206 moreso than 205 haha. However in 206 you don't get tutors like in 205, but during the labs I'm sure you can ask Anuj or Monica, they are gc's .

I probably have missed a bit of information, so others feel free to add to my post.

205 is a toughie, mainly because the style of learning will be differernt. you really need to UNDERSTAND the textbook (boron). a lot of people did ignore it as it was difficult to read but i found it essential, especially for the mcq test. so yes 205 is harder.
206 comparatively not so difficult imo as you should be used to that style of learning plus the content is simpler.
i would suggest find boron (big green book) and get a hang of how it reads. i felt in these papers its less about little details but more about concepts.
the essays in the exams have a choice so i think they are okay but the hardest thng is the SAQs. the mcqs are quite standard for the exam (repeat a lot from past years)

I did basically the same papers:lol: but not maths...a good choice of papers. In second semester you can put down to do all 4, and go to the first few lectures of MICR223 and BIOC223 and then cull one when you see which you like most. Doing semester one will probably tell you what you like anyway. I also recommend considering ANAT242. It can be a bit difficult, but if you end up enjoying neuro stuff, and want to continue with lots in 3rd year, you should be very interested by this paper (it actually has some neurophysiology topics in it). Good luck!

I was wondering if anyone could tell me about the Medsci 202, 203 and 204 papers and which ones are compartively easier/better to do?

HI everyone! I was thinking of taking Medsci 204 and 206, stage one stats or physics paper, Psych stage one paper but i am tossing between taking Psych 109 or 108, any recommendations on which one? because when i read the course outline for each they seemed very similar, also any advise on any Gen ed and other papers that could boost my gpa would be greatly appreciated. Thank you :)

Hey guys! Would it be possible to take a stage I paper (stats 101) and a gen ed (INTBUS151G) in second year biomed, and move one of the Biomed Stage 2 electives to 3rd year?

UoA changing majors after first year biomed

so after the bitter disappointment that was not getting into med, i find myself having to make a plan for the next two years. my long term plan is graduate med school in australia. Im not very excited about two more years of biomed, so I want to switch majors. Does anyone know if it is possible to pickup a mathematics and physiology major after year 1 and still finish in 3 years? has anyone on here done such a thing?

rytc2012, Hi for sitting the GAMSAT, do you suggest sitting it two times for practice purposes, like year 2 and 3 of study, or just once which is in the thisrd year? thank you :)
