UoA 'What papers should I do at UoA for graduate entry' Chat/enquiries

SKpol Yea biosci 202 is definitely hard, in my opinion the hardest paper I've sat so far at uni. Medsci 206 on the other hand was really interesting and I'd reccommend this paper, it's not excessively demanding and the lecturers are really good (most of them haha). Also you'll find that you get a lot of help during the labs from the lab instructors, so any lecture material you aren't sure about, they'd be happy to help out. I didn't do medsci 203 sorry, so I can't comment on it, but from what I've heard, there is a bucket load to memorise.........

Also has anyone on this forum done Medsci 315? I've had a look through using the search bar function and a few people have mentioned but haven't found anyone who has done it. If you have done it, how would you rate the assignments? It's worth 40% and i'm not sure how much needs to be done to get this 40%, is it marked quite harshly? Thanks in advance

Also jsut a general question, I was thinking of either doing Physics 107G or Psych 109 as part of Bachelor of Science schedule papers, which one would you guys recommend as the easier of the two? Content wise and ability to get an A+?

You cannot do Physics as a gen ed if you are studying a BSc? I'd recommend it as a non-gen ed paper over psych though.
Psych does have the advantage of plussage but TBH, it's not a major one.

Has anyone got any thoughts on completing a BHSc degree as an avenue to apply as a graduate? Apparently a lighter workload and covering aspects like ethics and health from a societal perspective. ANY thoughts appreciated !!!!

Hey guys, anyone else want to apply for OTGAO graduate entry?
Can I take a gen ed paper in third year or gen ed is counted as 100 level so i can only take 200 and 300 level papers?? anyone knows?
thanks!!

Several people in the class this year who came via the BHSc route. At the end of the day it's more what interests you more and whether ethics and so forth is something you feel you can do a good job writing about. Some people prefer the more rote learning that is characteristic of say the BSc in biomed, and others enjoy thinking about and responding to a topic. So do whatever you think you have a better shot at doing well at. Both routes are considered equal, at the end of the day you're merely ranked on your GPA. Although, I would say that doing ethics would put you in good stead for the interview which often has ethical situations that you need to respond to.

Post this in the Otago grad entry thread.

I'm a BHSc student and I'm applying for med at the end of this year. I actually was a biomed student for my first year and changed to a BHSc last year. In terms of the difference, I love what I'm studying, the topics are so relevant to medicine and they really force you to think about the wider issues around health. Plus having just two lectures and a tutorial per week for each paper means that you have a cruisier timetable with enough time to work on assignments. If you have any questions about the degree, feel free to ask.

Are they not available on the UoA exam database?

Unfortunately those particular papers are withheld. They've only given us 2012, 2011, 2007 and 2006. The 2007 and 2006 papers don't have any MCQ's to practice on, so basically only have the two recent papers... :(

I'm guessing you'll be out of luck, if they're withheld it's likely they're exams where they required the questions to be handed back in, usually because they want to recycle questions each year.

Yea it's a bit of a long shot but I'm hoping there might be someone around here who might have done 313 in 2010 or 2011, in which case they would have had access 2008, 2009 (2010 cohort) and 2010 (for the 2011 cohort) papers through the library database. I'm guessing they would normally always provide atleast the 2 previous years so I'm counting on someone in those two cohorts to be lurking in this forum haha. If not, then I'll just have to manage with what I have :)

Hmm I'm not so sure they simply embargo previous years, I think they embargo specific parts they want to reuse so I don't know if previous years will have had access either. But I have no idea, just basing this on what I've seen with other papers.

Oh right, didn't know that. Yea there's probably no way of getting our hands on those papers then...oh well.

Hi I don't know if it is reasonable asking here but will do.
Im doing HSFY this year but i have one of my papers under 70% therefore hugely distressed and dissapointed. (I want to do just med not dentistry or anything else)
Therefore I was thinking about taking CHEM111 as 8th paper and seeing how that goes, and maybe apply for Bsc in Chemistry.

My question is :

can you apply for Bsc in chem straight after Health science first year? I could not attend the course approval for semester 2 and so Im really stressed about my future...

Is it a reasonable Bsc to apply for graduate Medicine?

Anyone out there please help :( so stressed.. I dont know if this will even make sense..

Ask in the Otago specific forum or better yet look at the pre-reqs for a BSc in chem and that will confirm whether there are other Chem papers you'll need to do.

It's perfectly fine, any BSc is good and since you've done the HSFY which is equivalent to OLY1, going into year 2 won't be a problem.

Hey I'm new to MSO. Planning on applying for UoA 2014 grad intake.
My GPA isn't looking that great with 7.4 AND will be applying under RRAS. I've messed up my timetable this sem so will be doing 4 stage 300 level papers - mistake I know and have taken a level 100 last sem so can't apply for Otago.

SO....My question is: Why don't I stretch my degree out another year? Do three papers this sem. Then do more stage 200 level papers next year and pull up my GPA. Thoughts? Has anyone done this? Also goodluck for UMAT tomorrow anyone sitting it

Bit late on the reply front but yeah...
Essentially I've done this by taking up psych. It can work for you, especially at Auckland who only consider last two years for interview allocation and count 100 level papers (you've maintained the minimum 6+ average). Make sure you meet the min paper requirement for each year though - it should be 7-8 papers a year.

Hey guys!
Was wondering if anyone here on MSO has done/knows someone who has done GEOG205 in Summer School. It is one of the few Stage 2 science courses and seems somewhat interesting :) Cheers

It's Larry Chamley.

I didn't do Biosci 203 so I don't know how it helps with Medsci 313. I majored in Physiology, so I only did Medsci papers, no Biosci papers.

For the whole course. Although he may only do this in the postgrad repro paper, now that I think about it... So maybe don't worry! I didn't do Medsci 315 sorry, but I know it has a reputation as being an easy paper, although I think in reality it's not much easier or harder than any other Stage 3 Medsci paper.

p.s. I would totally recommend doing Medsci 311, such a good paper!

Hello, im doing physiology too! I heard medsci 311 was very hard, as is medsci 309.

I am tossing up between them, did you take 209 as well?
