UoA 'What papers should I do at UoA for graduate entry' Chat/enquiries

I was wondering if anyone could tell me about the Medsci 202, 203 and 204 papers and which ones are compartively easier/better to do?

Ive done both 203 and 204. 203 is a bitch of a paper (IMO). Alot of memorising to do. 204 is pharmacology which also has memorisiing (but just drug names, which I found easier to do).

rytc2012 thank you for your help, i will definitely be trying for Auckland/Dunedin as well! Congrats on getting an offer from Sydney as well as Auckland! I hope you don't mind me asking this but just so I know approx. what was your GPA, and do you have any tips or advice that can help me with study so I can work towards getting a high GPA. Because I found that this year, I studied very hard and put in lots of time and effort, however I still didn't manage to make it, and I know some of my friends that got accepted into Med this year, but they still managed to have a social life, so I am trying to figure out where I am going wrong. Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

Rahul Panchal thank you also for your help :)

Hey guys :)
For Biomed 2nd year courses, can STATS 101 or 150 be taken as a gen ed? Because there's a gen ed requirement for 2nd year, and I believe we also need to complete either STATS paper for our BSc degree?

Sorry, I didn't explain myself properly.
For Biomed, you need to take a STATS 101 or 150 paper, right? Well, can we take that paper as a gen ed, or do we need to take it as a required paper, and choose another paper as a gen ed?

Phone up whoever is in charge of the BHSc and get the final word from them - they'd happily help and will be able to give you a definitive answer. From what I saw on those lists STATS papers don't appear to be general ed which would suggest you would need to take it as a required paper and do a gen ed in addition.

No you cannot take it as a gen ed. You must as a regular paper.

Rey hi have you taken any level 2 science papers that you found were interesting and boost GPA because i am trying to choose my last three second year papers for Pharmacology. Thank you for your help :)

Hi~~
im planning my 2nd and 3year biomed bachelors degree~~
would like some feedback or help!!
for second year so far i have enrolled for

SEMESTER ONE
BIOSCI 201
MEDSCI 201
MEDSCI 205
PHIL 105G

SEMESTER TWO
BIOSCI 202
BIOSCI 203
MEDSCI 204
MEDSCI 206

To explain my choices~~
I first enrolled into medsci 201,203 and 205 for first semester
but after reading some of the forums, alot of people suggested not doing 203, as it is a difficult paper
so i decided to put a general education paper instead, phil 105g or im think of disability. (feedback on this choice pls!!!)

and for second semester, since i decided not to do 203 for first semester i need to fulfill the 45points so i decided to do 204 and 206
I heard that biosci 202 is a difficult paper and also 206 as a challenge too.
would this make my semester a bit too challenging?
should i rather take 203 in semester one and take gen ed instead of 206 in second semester?

and FINALLY~~~
would like to ask what will happen if i take stats 101 in my 3rd year.
i want to look at otago as well~~ but i heard that 100 stage papers will be counted as 0gpa for otago
so should i take it in summer school? does that count as my 3rd year?
and if i do take it in summer school will i take 7 papers for the rest of the year or still 8?

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!

hey~~ friend just curious as to why ~! you use the "~~" much!!

Sorry I don't have any advice on UoA as I don't attend.

Hey,

I can answer some of your questions seeing as I just completed second year last year. Overall the papers you have chosen were exactly the same as mine, except for a different gen ed. I was planning on doing stats in first sem this year seeing as I didn't really consider otago as an option due to the stage 1 counts as 0 GPA rule.

From my year, from what I heard 203 was really hard, it was made worse by the fact that the exam was on the same day as 205 which is another pretty challenging paper. Apparently 203 had heaps and heaps of content although the lecturer wasn't too bad. (Also just a tip, for medsci 201, it may seem quite easy but when you come to the muscle section, make sure you get to grips with all the forearm muscles, Peter Riordan explains these well).

Biosci 202, just going to put it bluntly, is the most difficult paper I've done so far at uni...it might just be me though, genetics is something I'm not too fond off. I can't give too much advise except just tough it out. As for medsci 206, I think it's actually a pretty cool paper, I would easily choose it over 203 (IMO) because neuroscience interests me more than mechanisms of diseases. The content for 206 is actually not too bad either and tests we had were pretty doable, the exam is a bit harder though. But overall the paper was a lot better than I expected, difficulty wise. Lab reports are easier than the 205 reports aswell, because the labs were more interesting haha  and lab instructors are really helpful.

So that's just my two cents worth from my experience but do according to your plans for the future and what would suit you the best.

Good luck :)

SKpol krypton sorry but can i ask about the 45 points that you said you need to fulfill?
i am starting second year also this year and first semester i am taking Biosci 201, Psych 202, gen ed, and Medsci 202, and for semester two im taking Medsci 204, 206, and two stage one papers (because i am trying for otago) anyone think that this is reasonable papers?

@Rey hi have you taken any level 2 science papers that you found were interesting and boost GPA because i am trying to choose my last three second year papers for Pharmacology. Thank you for your help :)

Sorry Hun I wouldn't know for sure but I can only give you advice on what my friends said was okay.

I'd recommend the geography papers that are also available during summer school. 207 and 205 I believe? I think psych 202 is probably a good move too (versus say MEDSCI which does not have plussage).

@SKpol @krypton sorry but can i ask about the 45 points that you said you need to fulfill?

Hey,
I think he's referring to the fact that considering he did a gen ed in first semester instead of another stage 2 paper (medsci 203), he had to take another stage 2 paper in second sem but I think it would be better if he explains it. I think if you look at the biomed page in UoA website, there's a map that you can follow to sort out the papers you have to do, ofcourse you can fit some of them in summer school to reduce the workload during the semester.

Also jsut a general question, I was thinking of either doing Physics 107G or Psych 109 as part of Bachelor of Science schedule papers, which one would you guys recommend as the easier of the two? Content wise and ability to get an A+?

@krypton

I heard phys 107 is the easiest phy paper to do ever!!
i haven't done it so don't quote me or anything but i have read in in mso people saying that it is the easiest physics paper.
no idea about psych 109.

@hm18 - i am pretty sure you have to do biosci 202 and 203 in your second semester unless you are thinking of doing it on your 3rd year. if you are then it shouldn't be a problem i think.

ALSO~ I would like to ask krypton or anybody. IF i am having otago as an option, i guess that stats 101 on 3rd year isnt a choice.
then would taking stats101 and other science papers at semester 2 and then doing the 200 papers on my 3rd year work?
So, example

SECOND YEAR

SEMESTER ONE
BIOSCI 201
MEDSCI 201
MEDSCI 205
PHIL 105G

SEMESTER TWO
100 science
100 science
stats 101

biosci 202

3rd YEAR

FIRST SEMESTER
biosci 300~
biosci 300~
medsci 300~
medsci 300~

SECOND SEMESTER
CHEM 390
biosci 203
medsci 204
medsci 206

so what i did to have easy science 100 papers in second year second semester
than doing the prerequisite biosci 202,203 and elective medsci204 and 206 in my third year second semester

would this allow me to successfully get the biomed degree?
and have a go at honours?
and no problem at applying to otago due to the 100paper = 0 GPA?

THANKS A LOT~~!!! ^^

SKpol Yea i've heard that about Physics 107 aswell and the paper itself seems really interesting. I've always had a bit of a soft spot when it comes to astronomy, the only thing is none of my close friends have done that paper so there's a sense of vulnerability whereas quite a few of my friends have done Psych 109 beforehand..just have to make sure physics 107 fits into my timetable before making a choice.

As for your query, I don't think I'd be the right person to answer that considering the way I set out my papers were rather orthodox (basically following th map given on the website where I did 2nd year papers in 2nd year and going to do 3rd year papers this year + science schedule papers). I didn't really have plans on applying for Otago so didn't do as much research and didn't set out my papers to accommodate for their rule change. Sorry I wouln't want to give you wrong information, so hope someone else can help you out.

Hi I am finding it hard to choose my last stage two science paper has anyone done Biosci 204 or 208? Any recommendations on some interesting papers? Thank you

@krypton

haha thanks anyway!

I would just like to ask another thing or two.

How did you find your second semester?
The 2 biosci and 2 medsci papers?
I hear that biosci 202 and medsci 206 are quite tough papers!!

Would you recommend having those papers at the second semester to others?

I'm still struggling to firmly choose my papers at the moment.
constantly dropping swapping editing.. haha
maybe i should do what majority does and do medsci 203 at first semester (203 because it seems to be a prerequisite to several 300 papers) and do my gen ed in second semester instead of medsci 206???

and LAST QUESTION.
How do you actually pick a major for biomed?
https://www.science.auckland.ac.nz/uoa/biomedical-science-ug#s3c2
I have been to the link above, and I see for example cancer biology recommended courses medsci 201-203.
What puts me off a lot is that they are 'recommended courses' not required.
how exactly do you attain a major in biomed?
is it achieved in postgraduate studies?

Thanks!!

If you could try and use proper grammar and punctuation, that'd be great, as it's a forum rule.
Also, what's with the 'roughly equal to' signs you insist on using in random places?

Now I'm not that crash hot with grammar myself, but I've made some tweaks to your post there, and I do believe it's now easier to read, for both English-speaking and non-English-speaking members/visitors of the forum.
