UQ UQ Dentistry: Admissions General Discussion

View attachment 5260

Update from Student UQ Academic Board member on StalkerSpace. 3 is interesting … wonder if it will be post grad.

Don’t really see a reason for the change as UQ already attracts a strong international cohort anyways which is why MD came in over MBBS
the only reason I can think about is that UQ can take domestic full-fee students by doing postgrad entry.

I suspect they may also do things like provisional entry (WA), degree package (unimelb) and bonus marks for internal applicants (CSU) which will boost up the demand for undergraduate degrees at UQ.

I guess it will also allow UQ to increase the number of domestic dental students without hurting their revenue. The current composition of dental students at UQ is unhealthy in the long term. 62% of the 2022 cohort are international students. I personally feel like an more ideal composition is to have some CSP places for domestic students, some places for international students and some full-fee places that are open to both domestic students and international students.

That sounds like the exact reason! Always follow the money trail!

is the doctor of dental medicine just bachelor of dental science
so if im reading that correct, could there be potentially more sports for bds for undergrads since theyre not taking internationals for 2023?

Who knows what it will be!

My thinking is at first - because universities aren’t allowed to charge full fees for bachelors degrees to domestic students (which is why the MD was brought into Australia in the first place) - they will offer Bachelors and Doctors dentistry side by side to fill current capacity at the dental school

It could be the case that they offer full fee BDS to only international students and full free Doctorates to domestics!

According to Vishaak from StalkerSpace who posted the update, UQ will run BDS and DDM simultaneously and has no intention to replace the BDS program. Now I am curious about how will this change affect the admission criteria for the BDS program for non-standard applicants next year.

by 'next year' do you mean students starting in 2023, or 2024?

Another question, does anyone know/suspect that the BDS for UQ may have a rural subquota like their Undergrad Medicine degree? Now I can't see anything on the universities BDS official page. But I can see in this info sheet from the university:
It does have a section for Bachelor of Dental Science Honours, under Admissions for the rural background subquota. Unsure of if this means just the +2 bonus points (like every other course in the uni) or an actual subquota like the med degree.

The other interesting thing was looking at the 2022 offers collated page on MSO, there is an offer for:
69th%ile, 99.70, RA2

My impression was a UCAT of 69% percentile would be far too low to get a place, and all the non-rural offers are in the high-nineties and there are rejections with higher UCAT. So perhaps, could this applicant have benefitted from a rural subquota...
Again in the 2021 offers I found this offer:
UCAT: 76th%ile, ATAR: 98.95, RA2

So does anyone potentially have any input or information on this subject? Thanks in advance guys!

I have a question: has anyone ever been offered a place a UQ dentistry but taken an hour too long to accept the offer so when you did accepted. it said all the places have been taken?

Hey, did any domestic students get an email from the HaBS faculty around midday? Something about accepting an offer to study despite QTAC results not been released yet?

are you rural, indigenous or applying through any other special access schemes? was UQ dent one of your top preferences? i got a 3210+569 and didnt get an email today (11th Jan)

I had UQ dent as my first preference. I only had ~3720 UCAT and no special access schemes. I think it might be because I was previously a UQ student and they must have my email in the system already. I've spoke to them and they said they can't tell me for sure until after results come out... So hope I aint getting mega trolled.

I got one, was in my spam mail and I'm not a UQ student. I really hope we're not getting trolled either 😬

hey guys! i got an offer to study dent at uq (also congrats to everyone else who got in!). I was just wondering if someone could help me out with the enrolment process in particular the courses we need to enrol into for each semester. If anyone knows i'd really appreciate the help! thanks

Hello, I think the degree is pretty set out already so I am just following the program on the UQ website. Unless ofc someone tells me otherwise...

My daughter got an UQ dental offer too. We are thinking about sharing a two-bedroom apartment in Brisbane. If you are interested for this option, please contact my daughter's mobile: 0466 316 712. Her name is Caitlin.
