UQ UQ Dentistry: Admissions General Discussion

Hi I'm a current UQ Dent 1st Year (was a Higher Education Applicant-1 year of WSU Medsci last year)
From my experiences UQ probably values UCAT scores heavily if you're an interstate domestic applicant.
I got in with a very low ATAR (non rural), of course relatively. But had a fairly high GPA (6.5) and decent UCAT (3060).
The above conversation is correct. I have to thank international students for the lower tuition fees and facilities availible.

Once you reach the threshold of the 99+ adjusted atar, offers are determined solely based on UCAT.
UQ also includes the SJT section of the UCAT when they make offers.
The lower tuition for domestic students is mainly due to government regulations, unis are not allowed to charge CSP students above the "student contribution amount". Otherwise the unis will charge a hefty amount regardless of how much international students pay. Just look at FFP dental places and bond university and American unis.

The latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) show that, in 2019–20, international education was worth $37.4 billion to the Australian economy. The more the international students pay, the more revenue the Australian government can make, and maybe the more subsidies will go to domestic students.

yeah, that's true, so I said "mainly" due to government regulations. However, the government allocating more fundings to universities does not necessarily mean the unis will charge domestic students less.

This is a Dent thread but it's not too different from Med. For general info, I have read from a Med Dean's published article that it costs the uni $60k a year per med student (not counting the free teaching donated by hospital consultants).

Each domestic CSP student contributes 11k HECS plus 24k gov subsidy = $35k. So the uni actually subsidises us lot a further $25k a year, from int'l fees and the uni's own income sources like investments, donations etc.

We can stop dreaming they will ever charge us less particularly for Dent or Med.

Hi, how do you know what the UCAT cut off was? I was told the UCAT cut off for UQ dentistry was around 3650 for 2022.
 
i spoke to them on the phone and they said 3650 (or smth like that) was the cut-off as well. Really hoping I get UQ dent though!

Sorry for being kinda ignorant, but can anyone help me here...
I am a first year uni student and my GPA should be around 5.875 or 6 + ATAR 93.2. I got 3140 in the UCAT. I am also a rural student, RA3, MM4. Do I have a chance at getting into UQ Dent?

I didn't study at UQ. The GPA is from 1FTE. My SJ was 625, meaning 3765 total (?) I think. I also did Extension 2 Maths in HSC, but IDK if that counts. Also is there an interview for UQ Dent or no?
And to other rural candidates: I did the QTAC Rural Form and Handed it in by 30 Sep to QTAC. Should I do anything or contact anyone in the meantime? Thanks

UQ dent does not have an interview.
You'll receive 2 bonus marks as a rural applicant.
Non-standards are ineligible for subject bonuses.
Do you mean 1 year fte? Your GPA is above the threshold if it was from 1 year FTE.
Your UCAT is high enough to receive an offer if the UCAT cut-off remains unchanged. I would you have a decent chance of receiving an offer this year.

Thanks man, the only thing is I did not do Chemistry in Year 12, and it is listed as a prerequisite. Is it possible that they may not check, or if they are strict, do you know what the best way to do a bridging course quickly is? Thank you so much.

If you’ve not done the pre-requisites then no, you’re not eligible, and yes, they do check. It’s unlikely you’d be able to complete a bridging course in time. If this is a high preference course for you, you should contact UQ Dent admissions (not general Uni admissions) to see if there is a bridging course they would accept.

It's not smart to place your bet on the admission team neglecting their responsibilities.

The following documents list the subjects they accept for prerequisites. Try to find one that you can complete before the deadline.

Thanks for your advice guys. Just wondering if you know when the deadline is, or should I call up UQ Dent Admissions tomorow and find out. Thanks again.

thanks both of you guys for your help, firstly.

but to anyone else in my situation: do the JCU Bridging Course (CH0020) and Sign up ASAP, they actually began on the 21st, but the Uni admissions team and professor worked magic and were able to get me enrolled today itself. And it only costs $50.

The only problem is that the results are published on the 23rd of December in this bridging course, and I've contacted QTAC and UQ about if this is too close to the 12 Jan Offer Round, and they both say they don't know but to try anyway - and if you miss out you will likely be considered for additional rounds. So if anyone here may know then please let me know.

I think the reason JCU even offers this bridging course is for its own dentistry course. And here is what they said in their offer letter to me regarding prerequisites for their BDS:
" If you are enrolling in CH0020 to meet subject pre-requisites for the Bachelor of Dental Surgery
please ensure you add this course to your QTAC application. "

So, Since UQ and JCU have the same offer round, maybe I might be safe - but I will double check with JCU to verify if they want their students to have added the qualification by the 9th of Dec, or the results date.

ps - Also now that I have enrolled in that bridging course, how do I add the qualification to my QTAC, I can't seem to find a way how. Maybe only they can do it once results are released.

The TACs run an academic status update for all applicants early January in preparation for the mid-Jan offer round. So you should be safe but I suggest you call QTAC after the bridging course results are released to double check.

Update from Student UQ Academic Board member on StalkerSpace. 3 is interesting … wonder if it will be post grad.

Don’t really see a reason for the change as UQ already attracts a strong international cohort anyways which is why MD came in over MBBS
