UQ UQ Medicine: Provisional Entry Questions and Discussion

I was just having a look on the UQ Doctor of Medicine page and it has the following:

Provisional Entry (available to students completing Year 12 in the year of application): OP1 or Rank99, Year 12 or equivalent English, and UCAT ANZ or ISAT (international applicants). Applicants must achieve a min. score in the ISAT (160 per section). UCAT ANZ/ISAT will be used to rank for an invite to interview. Entry is competitive based on OP/Rank, UCAT ANZ/ISAT and interview score.

This is different when you click begin study in 2019 (rather than 2020) - am I interpreting the 'begin study' wrong or is there going to be interviews?? i thought they weren't starting interviews until 2021 applicants!

This UQ page says differently > Changes to MD admissions

"Applying in 2019 for 2020

Provisional Entry Pathway

  • Applicants do not need to participate in MMIs.
  • 2020 Provisional Entry offer holders need to have completed two subject prerequisites before enrolment into the MD program by 2023."

With the subject incentive scheme for UQ, if I have 2 adjustments, would it increase my atar from 97.65 to 99.65? And does this apply to medicine? Thanks!

I believe it’s +2.0 ATAR points per adjustment, so in your case it would raise the ATAR to 99.95 (it’s irrelevant though because once you reach 99.0 it won’t make a difference). Yes, it applies to provisional entry medicine at UQ.

Beware the only subject bonuses for UQ med are Maths C equiv and LOTE (2 Rank points each). Other subject bonuses, if exist, don't apply to UQ med.

I know that UQ doesn't do second round offers right? But I'm curious if they upgrade bonded offers to unbounded if people turn down their CSP offers?

We’ve not seen evidence of this in collated dada threads over the years. Where it does happen (UAdel rings a bell), we get people updating us here. I don’t recall that happening for UQ.

The QTAC stats posted up a few days ago show last year UQ made 269 unbonded offers, 128 accepted and 106 bonded offers, 47 accepted. The 128 CSP accepted was well over the 100 CSP + 40 BMP target, so no room for second round or upgrade.

Curtin does not publish the weightings every year. Combined from various Admissions Guides they have said 60(ATAR) 40(UCAT) for interview selection then 40 : 20(UCAT) : 40 for place offers.

Interview invites for interstates usually come out 10ish January for interviews on 21-22nd this year.
Thank u so much
sorry again but would u know the dates for UQ med and dent offers for interviews

Did you apply for UQ med and dent? Probably a good idea to check out the selection criteria for any course you’re applying for! UQ currently doesn’t interview for provisional entry medicine or dentistry - it’s a 99 ATAR hurdle and then all on UCAT.

I'm looking into possible undergrad degrees for UQ provisional entry. I'm drawn to a course with a career qualification (so I can work weekends while studying med) at the end of it, eg. nursing or pharmacy, but nursing is more likely because it is 3 years. Science is also an option - but no job prospects at the end of that :(
Does anyone know if we are allowed to go on student exchange during the first degree for a semester or two? Would this cause any problems with the 5.0 GPA requirement eg. if grades whilst I am overseas at the other uni aren't counted?

Just to clarify, is 7 years the shortest possible length for a school leaver undertaking provisional entry? I remember reading somewhere about a "fast-tracked 6 year course"

Technically you can fast track any course at uq and finish it in a shorter time, I think if you are very confident, uq lets you do 6 subjects a semester and you can get a 3 year degree done in 2 years. But they don't do a fast tracked degree specifically you just have to do it yourself by overloading in the semester. You can also do summer semester courses, but these are considered to be harder than doing them in the actual semesters as there is only 8 weeks vs 13 and you must learn the same content. So save these for when you are very confident about something (and there is only a select few courses offered during this period). So ultimately it is possible to finish your science degree in 2 years and then do med, but it is risky as you need a 5gpa and since you have a place locked down, it is probably safest to explore your interests and enjoy your years where there is no stress from med, while also giving yourself optimal opportunity to maintain a 5+ gpa.

that clears things up heaps. overloading sounds like a fat ceebs. thanks for quick reply :)

The fast tracked 6-year course may have referred to other schools not UQ.

Griffith & Flinders compress their 3-year undergrad course into 2 years, then MD thus 2+4. UWA keeps the undergrad at 3 years but structure it such that it covers the contents of MD1, allowing students to hop into MD2 thus 3+3.

Even if you manage to compress undergrad into 2 years at UQ I'm not sure UQ will allow you to start the MD earlier, since that would eat away one spot from the grad-entry quota intended for that year. You might think one spot is no big deal but if UQ allows one there could be 30-40 wanting to do the same.

Not really true. Whilst a science degree isn't a vocational degree, it's incorrect to claim that non-vocational degrees don't lead to employment thereafter.

Sorry - should be more specific. In the context of the jobs that a med student needs : weekend/night part-time/casual shifts whilst completing the med degree, a basic science degree would be less likely to lead to employment.

Still wondering about the question about exchange opportunities during the undergrad degree. Might call UQ to ask.
