[Undergrad] UTAS Entry 2015 - non-standard

Status
Not open for further replies.
Hey ky678,

I'm not sure how New Zealand Students are considered, but that is a really great UMAT and with a good spread of scores, as a non-standard interstate I think you would have a great chance! again it just depends on the people applying against you. UTAS ranks by yur overall percentile once the cutoffs have been met (50-60-50 (maybe 45 section 3).

Best of luck
Ninj

@ Amirbang Yes, as far as I know, once you meet WAM/ATAR and 50-60-50 (UTAS has no interview and therefor places more weighting on section 2.) You are ranked according to overall percentile :) Best of luck with your applications.
Ninj

Hi edwa1414 Your section 2 score is looking quite good though! I heard UTAS puts a greater emphasis on that section so your chances seem higher than mine :)

Are you applying anywhere else?

Thanks! You too!

Btw I'm doing my application now and I'm required to hand in documents for my university and high school marks as I did them in NZ. Does anyone know whether the documents have to be official transcripts or are unofficial transcripts okay as well?

Hmmm it sounds like its not hard and fast rules, and they take into account a number of different things. Hopefully they consider 5 years as a paramedic favourably. I'm happy with my scores, though in the past I've gotten 64 for section 1, but had I focused more on section 1 my section 3 score would have suffered so we will see. The applications are in and my wife and I are moving regardless so fingers crossed!

hi guys!

I am a non-standard(first year uni), interstate and my umat is:

s1: 55
s2:62
s3: 60
Overall: 176
Percentile: 87

Is there any hope for me in utas? or for that matter anywhere else?

Thanks so much in advance guys!

Hey Lalli, Congrats on a great score. I think you are borderline for UTAS entry, you fulfill their requirements (provided you have a distinction average) I know people who got late offers this year with a lower UMAT, but it will totally depend on the cohort applying. I don't think you'll get first round but hold out for second or even third! If your rural you could also apply to UNCLE.
Best of luck
Ninj

Ninj Thank you so much for replying :) I do have a distinction average so far(hopefully can keep that up). i am not rural so UNCLE is out for me (would have loved that since i live in sydney!) Thanks once again! (love your prompt responses!)

Hi i graduated with an ATAR of 99.55 I have UMAT 55:42:72 (overall 78 percentile), I also have a distinction average. Have I stuffed my chances again? Or is there a slint slither of hope?

Thanks in advance.

Hi all! I too am hoping for a non standard spot in UTAS...have been trying for years for grad med until I realised UMAT was still an option!

My scores were:

S1: 55
S2: 69
S3: 54
Overall: 177, 87th percentile

I've just completed a master's degree here in Brisbane with about 6.4 GPA (over three semesters) but I've got conflicting advice on whether this is simply a hurdle or it is 50:50 GPA:UMAT....??

From what I can gather reading (trawling) through this forum is that my chances are borderline and hope for a second/third round offer?? I just don't know how hopeful I should be. UTAS has said to me on the phone that 180 overall is competitive but from what I can see a 177 this year is about the same percentile as 180 last year...here's hoping!

Any advice? Ninj

Cheers, Isaac

Hey @isaachose

I'm a first year at UTas from Brisbane as well and I totally remember the struggle of being an interstate nonstandard.

Okay so UTas as far as I know does NOT consider GAMSAT (as it is NOT a graduate program despite accepting graduate students).
It is based on your UMAT. I'm not entirely sure where @Ninj got her information but I know of quite a few interstate students in first year with us who got below an 87%ile UMAT. Again it does depend on the people who apply each year, which is why UTas says that 180 is competitive, but I would say you have a great chance!

Advice - APPLY! What's the worst that can happen? You don't get an offer? Yes, that is heart breaking (i know the feeling) but if you don't apply you won't get one for sure. Keep positive - I think you have a good chance! :) Also at UTAS try to speak to Helen - she usually is the one who gives the preliminary offers via phone. Also keep in mind you actually have a high chance of getting a CSP spot even if your offer comes in late-jan (like mine did) because QLD students get their offers late (or so it happened in my year).

Good luck again! and if you need any help - with your application or next year - let me know!

Cheers,
Tash <3

Hey bucklr!
AMAZING ATAR! Good job!
Unfortunately I know that UTAS puts a high emphasis on section 2 scores so I wouldn't be too optimistic.
BUT in saying that - please do apply, you never know who else will apply and that pool of applicants will slightly change the requirements each year.
Cheers,
Tash <3

Thanks nabey1 !! Yes, definitely a massive struggle...hope it is over soon.

Have applied already, just hoping to hear exactly what you've said - that people last year got in with less! And I've been trying with gamsat for a while but yeah I know that won't count for UTAS, just was confused as to whether they count GPA as a hurdle or if it's included in their calculations combined with UMAT?

I'm lucky that my S2 was quite high as I know they put emphasis on that section. Anyway, will be nervously waiting until Feb...will definitely get in touch if I make it in, thanks!

Cheers, Isaac

Also, how has Hobart compared to Brisbane for you? Not sure if I should get ahead of myself but I've already been looking up suburbs and blogs about Hobart etc. etc. already :) I don't really think I'd mind the small town vibe or the cold weather - has anything been an issue for you? nabey1

No worries isaachose !
Okay so how it works is GPA is just a hurdle (like a benchmark) so if you have above a distinction - they don't look at your GPA again just your UMAT.
no worries at all!
I actually really love Hobart (probably as much as Brisbane)! I would definitely recommend maybe not staying college and rather finding accomodation closer to the Menzies Research Institute (where all our lectures are) - as much as I love Jane Franklin Hall, I don't really think it's worth it - I've already got a place set for next year and just put up a listing for roommates. No it's very good to be prepared - a lot of people had such terrible issues finding accommodation so it's a great idea to look early. If you have questions about suburbs - just ask :) Nope not at all! I absolutely love the small town vibe and the cold weather is really not that bad - as long as you're dressed appropriately (ie WITH a jacket and NOT short shorts :P). It's also great that you can walk pretty much everywhere! Just as a future note don't get the textbooks early, at this stage we rarely use them. And there is a utas med facebook group where you can buy secondhand books.

Hi @Nabey FYI Helen is not involved with admissions for 2015 :)

Ryan

Hey ryanposselt , I've called a few times but keep getting different people, if Helen is no longer involved with admissions - is there another key contact? I've just called the general admissions once or twice and they were helpful...suppose there isn't much we can do now but wait anyway.

Best of luck - through all my reading on this forum I saw your 'shenanigans' of last year - as we've got the same percentile this year hope to see you there!

Thanks for further advice nabey1 , it's so exciting potentially moving down there!

Cheers, Isaac

Cheers isaachose - good luck to you too.

No I haven't worked out any specific administration personal for 2015. I think you can call and call and call or you can just hope and hope and hope - it probably has the same effect....
