UTAS UTAS Medicine: General Discussion

hey guys, I've been following this thread for a while and finally decided to make an account.
I contacted UTas this morning and was told that "most of the offers should be rolling out sometime next week".
Hopefully that brings some peace of mind to anyone awaiting an offer :)

I've often wondered why UTAS bother sending out offers prior to UAC and VTAC etc, so this actually makes sense, but I also know to take information from UTAS admissions with a grain of salt, and if interstate non-rural offers went out this afternoon, I would NOT be surprised :D

Probably not, unless they happen to have had some declines confirmed (which is unlikely given UAC/VTAC etc offers will not have or have only just come out, depending on when the UTAS offers eventually drop).

First round rural offers went out at the start of December. No non-rural offers have gone out yet (interstate).

That said, UTAS also likes making us (and even themselves!) look silly, so who knows?!
 
Oh man, so I'm a NZ graduate hoping to get into UTAS (or the others), got me a 98 percentile UMAT (S2 - 67) and thought I was pretty happy, but then I see that the non-standard entry to Tasmania was super competitive. Woo! I don't know how to feel, as I'm still waiting for information!

I'm just hoping that if the offer comes, it'll be, like, this month. It'd be a crazy time trying to move to another country to start university if I only have a couple of weeks notice..

UTAS used to have a (very small) quota for NZ students, but I don’t think this is the case anymore, and so, yep, you’ll be part of the incredibly competitive non-standard group.

Best of luck for a timely offer!! What’s your GPA? Your UMAT is certainly competitive.
 
Hi Guys,

Has any mature-age student (i'm 23) applied to UTas Sem 1 as a pathway to MBBS in 2019?

I am in my final semester of my Master of Public Health degree from the University of Massachusetts (GPA 3.78) and my undergrad was Bachelor of Economics from Monash University.

Just wondering if there are other non-traditional applicants in here that might have applied to / heard back from UTas?

Just to confirm, you’ve applied for BMedRes and hope to therefore sit UMAT this year and transfer into Med from 2019?

I have heard that some BMedRes offers have gone out, so I’m not sure why you’ve not heard anything. The GPA you’ve listed, is that on a 4 point scale? UTAS uses a 7 point scale, so I’m not sure how it converts, but I’d guess it would be enough for BMedRes.

I don’t know much about straight BMedRes application requirements. I might get back to you with some more questions!

Thank you for your prompt response.

I applied a few days back after the Domestic recruitment team advised that they were still accepting applications for Sem.1 2018. I initially planned to apply for Semester 2 but after giving it some thought, I chose semester 1 as my first preference.

Yes, correct, I plan to take the UMAT in July for 2019 MBBS entry. Would you happen to know how many spots are reserved for BMedRes students in the MBBS each year versus the BMedRes class size? Also, how competitive would you say BMedRes is?

My only concern with the application is not meeting the Chem pre-req and thus not being able to start this semester.

My GPA is on a 4.0 scale so, on a 7.0 scale, it would be 6.615 (most uni's just told me to multiply by 1.75 to convert).

I was looking for backups in case I did not receive an offer for MBBS at UTAS and applied for the BMedRes course this morning as my second preference.
I just received an offer for this BMedRes course a few minutes ago and wonder if people think that I won't receive my first preference (med) because of this?

Well, congrats skywhisp! I don't think that might be the case! I applied for that course a few days ago and haven't heard back so it is quite surprising that they got back to you with an offer within a day.

Do let us know if you plan to accept.

It likely means that you will only be considered for an offer on the basis that someone else declines theirs. On that note, however, UTAS have quite a high decline rate as people tend to accept offers closer to home.

If you don’t mind sharing, what are your ‘stats’? School leaver? Local? ATAR/GPA? UMAT?

ETA: I see you’re a non-standard applicant, so from the above, what are your UMAT and GPA?

Also, now I kno you’re a non-standard; it seems non-standard offers haven’t been made yet, so there’s a chance you haven’t missed a regular offer.
 
My stats:
GPA: Between 6.40 and 6.58 (haven't recalculated since finishing honours)
UMAT: s1 57, s2 67, s3 56 = 181 or 91%
Did apply for bonded place
Am interstate, non-rural, non-school leaver.
Have a BSc with hons from Unimelb

Ans to Dhruv:
Like I said, this is a backup option for me. I have an interview for Newcastle JMP on Monday, for which offers are release 9/2/18. This is my second option if I am unsuccessful with UTAS.
I am still eagerly awaiting offer release for UTAS so I have to sit on this offer and see what happens.

I am going to contact UTAS asap (currently at work) and query admissions about whether my pref #2 offer disqualifies me from a pref #1 offer. Fingers crossed offers are released soon! The waiting is killing me haha
 
Aaaaaand I just read the fine print in my BMedRes offer:
"You will still be considered for any higher preferences even if you accept this offer."
I should have read more carefully... sorry for wasting everone's time!
 
Haha, yeah, now I have all that info, you’re definitely still in the running as non-standards don’t appear to have received offers yet (non-rural, to clarify!).

That said, I anticipate your 181 might be too low. The lowest last year was 189. Fingers crossed for you though!

Well, I think my GPA came out to about 5.8 in a 7 point system... not super but I'm kinda hoping my umat will pull me through. I seem to be one of those cases where I hope that it's all about the umat, and not about the GPA. I guess it makes sense for them to not be super clear with the info, gives them the most wiggle room to find the people who look the best for them
Ah well. Good luck everyone else! I'll let you know if I get anything from them
