'What papers should I do at UoO for graduate entry' Chat, Enquiries and Help

Greetings everyone!

I am looking for an "easier" 200 level paper to do in first semester (I'm a third year).
From reading this thread MAOR 203, CLTE 203 were mentioned. Has anyone done these papers and can give me an idea of the assessments etc.
Also FORS201 looks quite appealing! Anyone done that one?

Many thanks!

Hi guys, im currently doing the course approval and i apparently i have time clashes all over, so i need to rearrange few papers.

What are your thoughts on CHEM205 (S1), or PHSE 203 and PHSL 342 PHSL344?

Hi There,
I was just wondering what are your thoughts on the two HUNT 221 textbooks that are suggested for the paper. Which one did people find more useful?

thank you :)

Hi everyone,
I'm in my 3rd year doing a BSc in neuroscience, and can't decide whether to do ANAT336 or PHSL341, so if anyone has some advice or info on these papers that would be greatly appreciated!!! Also planning on postgrad med (hopefully!!!)

I'm looking at either:
1st sem
ANAT336
NEUR301
PSYC323
MICR221

2nd sem
ANAT335
PSYC313
MICR223

OR 1st sem
PHSL341
NEUR301
PSYC323

2nd sem
ANAT335
PSYC313
MICR223
ANAT243

Thanks!!!!

HSFY and graduate Medicine

Hello everyone

I don't know if it is reasonable asking here but I hope this will do.

Im doing HSFY this year but i have one of my papers under 70% therefore hugely distressed and dissapointed. (I want to do just med not dentistry or anything else)

Therefore I was thinking about taking CHEM111 as 8th paper and seeing how that goes, and maybe apply for Bsc in Chemistry.
I have always had a interest in researching, reports, and Bsc in Chemistry caught my attention.

My question is :

can you apply for Bsc in chem straight after Health science first year? I could not attend the course approval for semester 2 and so Im really stressed about my future... Does that mean HSFY 1 year + 3 years of Bsc in chem????

Is it a reasonable Bsc to apply for graduate Medicine? I have seen many other "combinations of papers" or biomed papers recommended by members of MSO but never chem... is it because it is hard?

Anyone out there please help
[MedStudentsOnline.com.au] 'What papers should I do at UoO for graduate entry' Chat, Enquiries and Help
so stressed.. I dont know if this will even make sense..

Any comment will be appreciated. I am so lost and dissapointed and I don't know what Im going to do...
Please help!

also my other papers in HSFY semester 1 are just as bad. do they influence the gpa for the graduate application? ( something about 0.5 in first year 1.0 in second year or something.. does first year here mean the HSFY papers????)

Kia Ora tiptopicecream! Welcome to MSO and I commend your choice of username. First of all, you need to calm down. I am sorry to hear you didn't get the grades you were hoping for, but there are many many other options, and you can still get into Med School. I'm no expert on this, and it may be worth contacting the Health Sci office, but I am quite sure you can go from HSFY to second year BSc Chemistry. So it should be HSFY + 2 more years of BSc. It is perfectly possible to apply for Graduate Medicine from a BSc Chemistry. Biomed is more 'useful' in the sense that you can do degrees like Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology etc which will give you knowledge which will come in useful in Med School. As for whether it's easier - I can't say. I haven't done a biomed degree :-P From what I have heard around MSO, I believe HSFY is taken into account, but for graduate application they weight the 200 and 300 level papers more. Have a bit of a read around the forums, and I am sure you will find something that will help you. But please relax! You will be able to make decisions better, trust me :-) Oh and Cathay or frootloop - this probably belongs in another thread :-)

[offtopic]Thread moved. tiptopicecream, please use existing threads where possible :) [/offtopic]

A strong grounding in physiology is pretty important for neuro IMO, I wish I had done more. So it it were me I'd do the PHSL341 paper.

Has anyone here done HEAL202 before? I've searched the forums and, if I remember correctly, 2 people have mentioned HEAL202 but they aren't active on MSO anymore.

He dspro,
not sure if you will read this. I was wondering how are the physiology papers at 200 and 300 level assessed?
I considering doing a BSc majoring in either anatomy or physiology, as I look to get into med via the graduate entry. Which of the two majors would you recommend in terms of easiness, relevance in the professional programmes and work load.
thanks

Physiology is is a mixture of lab write-ups and exams. Personally I think getting a good grounding in physiology is so much more important than knowing the anatomy unless you want to become a surgeon. You'll do plenty of anatomy when you get into med, if you enjoy physio take the opportunity to get into it more - it will help you a lot in med.

Hi there,

I am currently doing Biomed majoring in Functional Human biology with a hope of getting into med. I will be doing my 3rd year next year. I would like to know of some opinions on BIOC230?

Hey, I did Healthsci this year, and although came out with an A+ average, my UMAT was below par (63rd percentile), and am now considering the postgraduate entry scheme.

I am quite unsure as to what BSc to take. I really like chemistry, and don't think I'm bad (got straight E's in NCEA L3, A scholarship, and 95% in CHEM191). However, I was wondering what the 200/300 level papers were like?

I have scavenged through the website and can pretty much only find advice on anatomy/physiology/microbiology papers (amongst some others). Any help or advice on these chem papers would be much appreciated =)

I am in the process of deciding on papers for next year, and summer school is out of the question for me - I have plans, haha. Any help/comments on the chem papers, and other papers I could take would be a great help.

Thanks in ADVANCE!!

Dooooooooes anyone know if I repeat the same paper i took in second year for third year, will it still count towards med? The paper i want to repeat is my worst paper for second year, so its not part of the 'top 7' but i did not fail it and is a second year paper.

Hi Tonykim,

Unfortunately, Otago University will not allow you to re-enrol in a paper within which a pass grade has already been obtained. Unless you fail it first time round, you cannot take it again.

Hope that helps,
-LM

Anyone here done ZOOL 200/300 level papers? What are they like??

I am also considering in doing Bachelor of Biomedical science in functional human biology and I need to choose my optional papers carefully, particularly ones which will boost up my GPA. I was wondering the level of difficulty of BSNS106, INFO211, MICR221, MAOR202 and MAOR203 as well as MICR332. And I am also considering doing two summer school papers in 2015 however I was wondering if I would have enough time to study for GAMSAT? The two papers I was considering were FORB201 and HUNT233. Any feedback would be of great help. Thanks :)

MICR 221 is pretty easy. I'd recommend taking it as it gives you the option of switching to the infection and immunity major after sem 1, if you decide that micro/immunology is your thing. I don't really know anything about the other papers you've listed... but have you considered MAOR 110. Easiest A+ you'll ever get. Guarantee it.

Why don't you take 4x200L science papers in first semester so you can keep your options open, and explore your interests. If you find that after sem 1 that your GPA needs to be higher, then consider taking a 100 level paper... like MAOR 110. I'm pretty sure this paper is offered in both semesters.
