'What papers should I do at UoO for graduate entry' Chat, Enquiries and Help

As for studying for GAMSAT during summer school... I'd recommend only taking one summer school paper. A friend of mine signed up for both HUNT and FORB in summer school 2013 and after the first week of classes felt that taking both papers and trying to study for GAMSAT at the same time would have been a bit much. I recommend only taking FORB (the easier of the two... by far) if you're wanting to study for GAMSAT concurrently

Hi there,

I have decided to do a NEUROSCIENCE major in the hopes of doing med in a couple of years, and I would quite love to minor in PHILOSOPHY. anyone done PHIL papers? they seem VERY VERY VERY interesting and abstract and I was wondering if anyone could provide me info on what they were like, their relative easiness etc. I know it isn't a very popular subject but anyone that knows people who've done them and recommend them are welcome to reply as well. I am very interested but would still like to maintain a high GPA. However I would rather put some more effort in and gain A+s in the PHIL papers than get easy A+s in boring papers that'll will definitely be of no interest to me .

Thanks in advance!

Hey, I'm trying to get into dentistry through post grad entry and I can't decide whether to do BSc in physiology or BBiomedSc in functional human biology...

I know that for the second year BSc is more advantageous (more 100 level papers) but for the third year I know the 4 PSYL papers require lots of work, but is swapping out two of them for ANAT 331, ANAT 332, ANAT 335, BIOC 353, HUNT 311, HUNT 312, MICR 332, MICR 334, PATH 301, PHAL 301, PHAL 304, PHSL 342 (or PHSL 341or PHSL 344) any better? Do any of those papers require less effort (lab reports etc.) than PHSL 341/342/344?

Also, for BBiomedSc do the '18/36 further points' for each year have to be science papers?

Thank you!!

HUNT221 Opinions

Has anyone taken HUNT221. If they have could they please tell me how difficult the paper is? How much workload is given throughout the semester. How hard it is to write a decent article that gets good marks. How harshly do they mark assessment? Thanks

I'm not sure if anyone will see this, but is it recommended to take GENE221 to do well in MICR221? Because I really do not want to do a genetics paper...

Why not :( . . Haha, na GENE221 is the WORST.

Recommended papers from my personal experience:

MICR221 - really interesting and fairly straightforward, well organized paper
MAOR102 - good if you're genuinely interested and definitely A+ material
MAOR110 - Taipa is the man...super breezy A+
CLTE203 - literally learning about spinning yarns haha but lovely department and straightforward content
FORB201 (summer school) - so interesting and pretty fun assignment to do + fairly simple final exam
PHSL345 - broad and interesting content, some harshly marked internals though
PHS344 - definitely challenging but a very interesting and cool paper on cardiovascular physiology and research today

Would not recommend HUNT223 - although the content is super straightforward and the tests and exam are simple, the assignments are really harshly marked and hard to ace

xD It's just cause when it came to applying for the paper, they said that GENE221 was a highly recommended paper, which would be odd cause wouldn't that mean that those who do a microbiology minor be disadvantaged? (Cause GENE221 is needed only for major)

Thank you for the suggestions :) I've chosen MAOR102 and MAOR110 as the level 100 papers and hopefully MICR221 is interesting and "fairly straightforward" without taking GENE221 :D

I know lots of people that did MICR221 without GENE221 and easily aced it. trust me, highly recommended doesn't necessarily mean you need to do it to ace it - content overlap occurs so you have a more extensive exposure to the subject, but you definitely don't need to do it to ace one or the other.

I'm pretty sure they're thinking of the long term when they highly recommend some papers. For example, for my Genetics major, BIOC221 was highly recommended because it has some overlap with GENE221 (I think..), but MAINLY because it opens up more options for third year paper choices for the degree (e.g. BIOC352). I got around fine without doing the highly recommended (and even some of the recommended) papers.

Thank you very much Khaos! :) I'm so glad that I don't have to do GENE221 cause then that would suck D:

Definitely looking forward to the paper, and to next year too :D

Just wondering if MAOR110 is all internal?

AND also I was wondering if they did videos or voice recordings for every lecture?

I'm pretty sure MAOR110 is all internal (but includes like one or two presentation/speaking components to the class). Pretty sure the paper is quite small so I don't think they would podcast the lectures.

MAOR110 is all internal :3
The lecture is in the commerce building this year with the smallest amount of seats in the room being 94. So the paper is smaller than others.

Is anyone else taking this paper this semester? just wondering...

Yup I decided to take it this semester. So far really good! :)

Does anyone know what the video recording for MAOR110 is like? Is it like a 'final exam' where you have to communicate in Maori to your tutor while being video recorded? just want to make sure cause the assessments so far have been more 'open booked' rather than having to study for anything...

In third year, should I take 7 papers (to hopefully concentrate on them more and get better grades) or take 8 as a back up if one goes badly?

(I am planning on taking FORB201 in summer school if I can, but I'm just wondering about during semester time)

Thanks in advance!

You could take two papers during summer school, and 7 during the year. During the third year of my BSc I did 10 papers in total. It was tough, but manageable.
