'What papers should I do at UoO for graduate entry' Chat, Enquiries and Help

It is definitely worth getting in touch with Anatomy or Physiology departments if that is the course you want to do (can you imagine doing a whole degree in a subject you're not interested in? I would think it would be hard to keep up the motivation, but that's just me). I can't tell you if they will consider your A+ in 191 but I think it shows your capabilities!

Alternatively, you could just take 192 again next year. It would push back your degree by a year, but honestly - a year is nothing. I did 192 in my second year and I've just done my exam for ANAT243 (in my third year) because I couldn't take it until I did HUBS192. If you were planning on majoring in both Anatomy and Physiology, your degree would take 4 years regardless, so this wouldn't make a difference at all.

Thanks so much! How did you find the physiology papers? Are you trying for postgrad into any course if you don't mind me asking?

I'm not taking Physiology sorry! I think you'll find a lot of info about the Physiology papers earlier in this thread though :)

I'm definitely looking to apply for postgrad entry into Med. Otherwise I'll do Anatomy honours

Hello! Just finished my 2nd year in my Bachelor of Science degree majoring Physiology, minoring Pharmacology. Anyone know any good papers to pick that are both interesting and the marking won't screw you over for my 3rd year? (aka A+ is achievable)
I was thinking...SS - BIOA201 + FORB201. S1 - MICR221, PHSL342, PHSL345, PHAL305. S2 - PHAL304, PHSL343, PHSL344.

Also to help contribute to the forums here's some up to date intel on the papers I did this year:
S1 - Final Marks
Pharmacology.PHAL211: 90% - The course was well laid out in my opinion, didn't require an absurd amount of studying, was quite interesting overall (also having a small statistics background would help a little, but not mandatory). Good tip is to make a drug list for final exams and be able to say out loud what each one does.

Neurophysiology.PHSL231: 92% - I love the brain, and found that this paper was useful for PHAL211, PHAL212, ANAT242, PHAL232. A good all round paper because it will be useful later on.

Economics.BSNS104: 91% - I didn't study economics at high school, it's a well taught paper on the fundamentals of macro and microeconomics and it's fairly easy to pick up concepts if you put the work in and go to tutorials. (try to get the lecturer as your tutor). There was plussage for the midterm, and the final exam is 50MCQs and 20 short answer Qs.

S2 (showing overall internal assessment grades, yet to receive final grades)
Neurobiology.ANAT242 - Internal grade: 89.3% - the key to this is to download all the pictures from the lecture slides and be able to recite all the structures pointed + a function of each one. What I did to revise was keep drawing the brain from different angles (coronal/horizontal/sagittal) and them name all the structures.

Cardiac+Respiratory Physiology.PHSL232 - Internal grade: 90% - they made the first terms test super easy for this one (got 100%) because last year's was super hard. Unfortunately the final exam for this paper was in my opinion, so much harder than PHSL231 or PHSL232. The first two modules: cardiac and respiratory physiology are actually good, but the next two modules Exercise and pathophysiology I struggled.

Epithelia+Renal+GI Physiology.PHSL233 - Internal grade: 86% - Much easier final exam than PHSL232, the content is more digestable (geddit, it's GI).

Pharmacology.PHAL212 - Internal grade: 85% - Final exam was not too bad, there isn't a tremendous amount of content just like PHAL211, but the 2 lab reports worth 10% each were marked quite harshly for everyone (74% and 80% for lab reports, 90% for essay) and got a lot of people down. There was also basically a free 5% from a literature assignment (like a library scavenger hunt), some people didn't get near-full marks for it though, not sure why...

I was thinking...SS - BIOA201 + FORB201. S1 - MICR221, PHSL342, PHSL345, PHAL305. S2 - PHAL304, PHSL343, PHSL344.

I took BIOA201 and got an A+ so you're probably good to go with that one. I'm taking FORB201 in summer school too, I'll see you there! As for the rest, I can't really help as I'm an Anatomy major.
But if you enjoyed ANAT242, ANAT335 has been really good. I've found it far more interesting than 242, I also feel like there is less content but that might just be because I'm much more on top of my work this year. My internal grade is 87% and I definitely could have done better on the first test if I didn't have like 4 other things due that week. The internal assessment is only two terms test so it's easy to keep on top of as you're not constantly studying for more tests or writing reports etc. The exam doesn't seem to bad either, but we will see next week haha. I've probably jinxed it now.

Are you able to give me some more info on PHSL231? I need two more papers to fill up my year next year and I was considering this one! :)

I highly recommend PHAL305. It's a great paper and is really interesting. The labs simulate the drug discovery process. You learn how to use a molecular modeling program called PyMOL to determine how a drug binds to a protein and to suggest structural changes that may make the drug bind tighter. You then carry out the rest of the labs using your new 'lead compound' against a control drug. It's all made up so you don't actually make your new drug. You'll just be testing two different compounds, one of which you will pretend is your new drug in the write up at the end of the semester. This was a really cool way to run the labs, rather than having a number of discrete topics. Though I did that paper in 2013... so it may have changed.

PHAL304 is also a really good paper... it's quite cardio/renal heavy though... but apparently this paper has changed a lot from when I did it. The assignments aren't too bad and the final exam is pretty fair.

I got 94% for PHAL305 and 89% for PHAL304. I'm happy to answer any more questions you may have about these papers.

What do you guys think of this choice of papers for second year of BBiomedsc.

ANAT241, MICR221, PHSL231.
MICR222, MICR223, PHSL233, BIOL112.

and then BIO203 and FORB201 in SS the following year.

and then maybe do PUBH211 and BIOC230 in third year as a few 200-level papers there.

Consider taking MAOR110 if you havn't by far the easiest paper I took throughout my 3 years in Dunedin.
Maybe consider PYSC111 & PSYC112, mid terms are quite straight forward, final exams are also straightforward (multichoice) but the lab reports can be harshly marked, but often grades get scaled signifcantly anyway, in psyc111 I got 81 for my first report and in the 70's for my second (I think each was worth around 12%) but i still got 93% for the paper overall.

Why don't you consider taking a 4th paper in first semester to open up your options for second semester/another major. Have a look into any of the BIOC, PHAL, or GENE papers.

Are you primarily going for med or dent? When I was doing my BSc, 100 level papers taken in the third year were not counted in your GPA for application to med, but they were for dent... not too sure if this is still the same though, that was 3 years ago. But you could consider leaving MAOR110 for third year if you're going for dent.

Hi,

It's still the same re. 100level papers.

Hey guys! I'm looking for some advice on paper selection.

I'm currently enrolled to do a BBiomedSc (Functional Human Biology) and have, so far, chosen the following papers:
S1: ANAT241, PHAL211, PHSL231
S2: PHAL212, PHSL232, PHSL233

I'll do FORB201 next SS (and maybe HUNT233, but I could use that time to study GAMSAT.)

and in 3rd year S1/S2 I think I'll do:
S1: PHAL306, PHSL345
S2: PHAL304, PHSL343

So I've chosen these papers to fulfil not only BBiomedSc (FHB), but also in Drugs and Human Health, as well as possibly set up a BSc in Pharmacology or Physiology in 3rd year (and/or to minor in Environmental Toxicology etc.).
However, as I do have some spaces left, I was wondering if I could also fulfil a pathway to a BSc in Neuroscience. At the same time though, I'm looking to enter postgrad Med at either Otago or Auckland (or Australia #GAMSAT), or postgrad Dent at Otago, so I could instead fill up the 2nd year spaces with MATH160, MAOR102/110 etc. for GPA, and 3rd year spaces with S1: BIOC221/GENE221 + S2: BIOC223/PATH201 for interest (also to fulfil other BSc's).

What do y'all think I should do? :)
Thanks heaps in advance!

The only paper I can give you advice on is GENE221. There is a lot of negative opinions on this paper which I'm sure you have seen or will see, but it's really not that bad. It's just boring. If you can stay motivated and up to date with the content you will be fine! Just keep your expectations low in terms of how interesting it will be, haha.

I've also done ANAT241 and it's great :)

Hi!

I am going to complete a Bachelor of Health Sciences at the UoA and am looking to apply to medicine through graduate entry but I cant seem to find any threads or info on what papers to take in second year as I want to achieve a high GPA..and despite emailing the faculty no one has been very helpful so does anyone have any advice on good GPA boosters for health science or know anyone I can privately message? Also I was wondering if anyone had any effective study techniques to achieve A/A+

Thanks!

Hey guys, I'm going to be doing my second year of a BBiomedsc in infection and immunity with the goal of getting into dent. I'm just looking for some advice on what extra 300 level papers I should take. So far my plan looks like this but I'm not too sure about gene and anat. I'm not too keen on doing oral presentations which I think ANAT332 and some GENE papers might have? Are these usually in front of the whole class or just a tutor?

S1: MICR221, ANAT241, GENE221, COMP150
S2: MICR222, MICR223, GENE222, COMP160

SS: FORB201, HUNT223
S1: MICR334, GENE315?
S2: MICR332, ANAT332/MICR337

And another 200 level paper in S1 and S2, maybe more computer science if that goes well this year.

So can anyone give me advice on any of the assessment types etc of GENE221, GENE222, GENE315, ANAT332? Oral presentations are most likely a deal breaker for me. Can't seem to find the course outlines and assessment types for these papers online. Thanks :)

Hi,

There is a thread about Otago. Perhaps try Auckland - What papers should I do at UoA for Grad-Entry Med? | Med Students Online. Also, what did you ask the faculty about? If it was along the lines of <...am looking to apply to medicine through graduate entry but I cant seem to find any threads or info on what papers to take in second year as I want to achieve a high GPA>, I would imagine they have very little advice if any.

In terms of study techniques - I find it useful to have a set of techniques individualised for each papers. So, I would "study" (before the semester) each paper's mechanics and plan/adjust accordingly. This is especially good when you have to take many different papers.

Good luck!

Hi guys i failed HUBS192 BIOC192 PUBH192
I'm planning on studying neuroscience this year can anyone review GENE221 PHSL231 and MAOR110 please for my semester one papers?
Cheers

I did PHSL231 and MAOR110 in my 2nd year.

PHSL231 is a great paper and I personally really enjoyed it (probably my favourite paper in my 2nd yr). I found that doing the past exam papers helped with finals as they repeated some questions.

MAOR110 was a really fun paper :) It's a language paper and for me it was like taking a "break" from the sciences. The lecturer is a fun dude and I never felt sleepy in his class. The assessments were pretty easy. I highly recommend if you want an easy A+.

Hey guys, I'm currently on the waitlist (it's definitely a wait alright haha). My backup plan right now is to do Biomedical Sciences, majoring in Drugs and Human Health or Functional Human Biology.

ANAT241, PHAL211, PHSL231 and BIOC221
PHAL212, PHSL232, PHSL233 and BIOC223.

Would the workload be too much to get those A+? I can potentially replace BIOC221 and BIOC223 with something easier, just want to keep my options open as much as possible. Thanks!

Hey everyone, I'm currently looking at doing a BBiomedsc in Functional Human Biology, and was wondering if my paper selection is suitable for getting those A+'s for post grad entry.

Semester 1:
ANAT241
MAOR110
PHSL231
MICR221

Semester 2:
ANAT242
PATH201
PHSL232
PHSL233

Any advice would be much appreciated, Thanks :)
