'What papers should I do at UoO for graduate entry' Chat, Enquiries and Help

Hi, I’m a bit new to the whole uni enrolling process coming out fresh from health sci. So I’m applying to for 2nd year biomed and from my understanding we need six core papers plus an extra one. So that’s seven papers. Is that the minimum requirement? And if so, why might someone take 8 papers? Is it to take a bit of load off their third year or for more points or something? Thanks.

People usually take more papers than they need to in order to have the highest GPA they can get for med/dent entry.

Essentially, if you get a better grade on one paper, this can "replace" a worse grade of a different paper and boost your chances for med/dent entry. With the new system of calculating your weighted GPA for entry into professional programmes, one should take as many 200 level papers they can + six 300 level papers for their 3rd year if they want to maximise their chances.

I think in first year I took 8 papers, for 2nd year I took 8 as well, and for 3rd year I took 9 (since I did summer school).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought they looked at your top 120 points for your 300 level papers, so essentially would that mean it would be best to have 7 300 level papers to maximise your gpa, if they are 18 point papers?

I've been told that only 6 papers count towards your top 120 points, and that the 7th one doesn't. Honestly not too sure about this - can someone please clarify whether they take into account 6 or 7 300-level papers this year?

120 points of 300 level papers count. 18 points per paper. 120/18 = 6.66 300 level papers count -> so people normally only take 6, but 7 would theoretically max out your GPA

I believe they take top 6 300 level papers x 18 points x 1.5 + 7th 300 level paper x 12 points x 1.5
This makes up 120 points from 300 level. It doesn't matter if your 7th paper is 18 points, they grade it as though its worth 12 points.

Also, has anyone taken EDUC or SPEX papers? Im a PSYC major so some of the EDUC papers sound relevant to my degree but I don't know of anyone who has taken them. Thanks :)

Aaaah that makes so much sense now, thank you!

Hey guys! Hope everyone is ready and buckled to rock another year!

Currently going into 2nd year BIOMED majoring in functional human biology

Was wondering if anyone could take a look at my papers? I decided to take 7 but apparently it's much more ideal to take 8 so idk atm, could possibly add another before the end of the week but still not quite sure what to take.
Any recommendations or tips would be greatly appreciated :D

S1: ANAT241, MICR221, PHSL231
S2: ANAT243, MICR223, PHSL232, PHSL233

I screwed up HSFY and got an average of B-..
Not sure if it's still possible to pursue dent or med but I guess there's no other way of finding out :(.

Thank you kind stranger XD

Be careful with your 300 level papers since Micr and Phsl papers perfectly clash with each other in 300 level.

Do you think taking one 300 level paper in 2nd year and taking one 200 level paper in 3rd year is okay? Just to lessen the workload when doing 300 level papers!

Hey Fili!
Thank you for scanning over my papers.

In this case, should I change my 200 level papers. Or would it be fine to keep it the way it is?
I'm not really sure how it would work out. If PHSL and MICR papers may clash. I assume there would be no way to separate the two types of paper unless both MICR and PHSL could be taught in both sems and then I could separate MICR to one sem and PHSL papers to the other?

Thank you in advance for reading this!!! Still a big noob at these things.

Idk if you should change it since it looks fine atm. I lowkey wanted to do Micr and Phsl but was forced to do Bioc instead since Micro was my major. Since functional human bio is your major, you will always have phsl papers every sem. You may be able to have some Micro 300 level papers in there but just make sure you have prerequisites for them and that you're fine doing 300 level Anat in case your paper options are limited.

Hi, I am thinking of replacing PHAL 211 with BITC 201, but haven't found many doing BITC 201.
Can anyone give an overview of this paper? I tried to visit the bioethics department today to get some info but got lost :(

Thank you!

Hi, can anyone who has done these papers advise me on which one is easier to get an A in: MICR221 or PHSL231? I was quite confused as both seem really content heavy... Also any other recommendations for easy A papers (after putting in the required hardwork ofcourse) for second year graduate entry? Cheers

Got A on both these papers and I know plenty who got A+. Micro papers are like 100% wrote-learning. I found Phsl231 to be more fun though due to some cool modules e.g. special senses.
