'What papers should I do at UoO for graduate entry' Chat, Enquiries and Help

Hi there. So there’s actually 240 points allocated for 100 and 200-level papers. They take up to the best 120 points in 300-level then fill the rest up with the best 100 and 200-level papers.

With the new weighted GPA system, people usually take as much 200-papers as they can in order to replace the 100-papers. As to where these extra 200-papers come from really depends on the person. These can be through summer school, pre-Christmas summer school, and/or throughout 3rd year alongside 300-papers.

If you look through the past pages of this thread, you should see some examples of what people have done. Personally, I did 7 200-level papers 2nd year, 2 in 3rd year summer school, and 1 during my 3rd year = totalling up to 10 200-level papers. Theoretically, I didn’t take as much as I could to maximise my chances but didn’t really mind. Some people took as much as they could though (>10 200-level papers) and worked out very well!
Thanks for your help.

So to maximize your papers, you can take more than 4 per semester, or do summer school?
Also, what's the difference between pre-Christmas summer school and summer school besides the dates? Can I do either in my 2nd and 3rd year?

Yes, but make a decision that you can keep on top of aye. As much of an advantage it is getting as much 200-level papers, you don’t wanna take heaps and have subpar grades. Think about your mental health too (i.e. you want to stay away from burnout)! This is dependent on each person, but as a rule of thumb, take as many as papers as you realistically think you can handle. That’ll get you your best marks, regardless of how many papers you take.

Pre-Christmas (PXSS) is shorter than SS. Papers offered in PXSS are usually not “science-y” as well (usually like religion papers). Both can be done in both 2nd and 3rd year.

Like GuywithGlasses said you need to find a balance between workload and your health. There is no point taking heaps of papers that will burn you out.

You might also want to consider the amount of workload required for 300 level papers. A lot of people only take 3 300 level papers in one semester, because its a very heavy workload.

Is it common to take 1 non-science paper at 200-level that you can get a good grade in to make up 8 papers?

Yeah pretty common. I took an education paper - it was awesome + a really good break from the content heavy sciences. Although keep in mind that there are some non-science papers that are difficult so probs not best to get into a mindset of non-science = not-difficult!

Is it possible to do the following papers: HUNT241, MICR221 and PATH201 under a Functional Human Biology major? As eVision is giving me errors and not letting me submit these papers.

Hi Guys, just wondering if anyone here is able to review my selection of these 3 papers EDU 252, MAOR 202 & PACI 201? Also if there is any recommendations on a science paper I need one more paper to chose.

Any help is much appreciated! ( :

I took MAOR202 in 2019 and it was a fantastic paper! It was extremely interesting and if you put in effort you can easily achieve an A+ :) When I sat the paper you had to submit a reflection journal entry every two weeks based off one of the two lectures (I tended to go to 1 lecture every second week and just write my reflective journal on the lecture I chose to attend) - this saved me a huge amount of time. 100% would do that paper.

EDUC252 is probably one of the hidden gems out there. 1 lecture and 1 tutorial a week (if all has stayed the same). 40% assignment about literally Learning Something New (theories about learning and how you applied them) + 15% study diary (you just write down how you study + any improvements you can make and why) + 45% exam (which they give you a blueprint on what to study). Extremely interesting paper imho. Less workload than usual science papers. Would 100% recommend to take it. Only “con” I could think of is that as it isn’t a science paper, marking could be prone to being subjective, but overall, marking is still pretty good.

Now just in general with choosing 200 papers, make sure you’re not missing out on any prerequisites for your degree for 300 papers as well!

EDUC252 sounds like a pretty good paper for me. Could you please tell me what the tutorials/workshops were like? Does EDUC252 also involve any group work or assignments?

Tutorials were super chill haha basically just builds on the lecture from that same week. It’s 2 hours each with a few people from your class (around 20ish) if I remember properly + not compulsory if you’re not doing a teaching degree (but I suggest you still go just to be in the right habits)! The teaching fellow for my tutorial group was awesome so I had no problems with my one, though I did hear some being super strict. These are also usually the people who mark your assignments.

No group work or assignments from what I recall.

I took MAOR202 last year in 2020. I got an A+ without the covid grade bump. It is the next paper from MAOR102, but it is not the same in the way that it is more seminar-based. The paper co-ordinator, Erica, is extremely nice and will be of great help to you. The journals in 2020 were worth 30% of your grade. For me, the trick for getting 100% in all your journals was to use "I" sentences and add in some reading and lecture contents to support your understanding. I highly recommend taking this paper, not only because it is one of the many nice papers but because the contents in the paper could be of great use to future health professionals.

I also took PACI201 in 2020, and I got an A. I also recommend taking this paper also.

All the best

Could somebody share their experiences on PHSL 300-level papers? I need to take four out of PHSL341, 342, 343, 344, 345, and not sure which one to not take.
Also, thoughts on ANAT331 and BIOA301 would be really helpful

Thank you :)

I took ANAT331 a couple of years ago so not sure if it's entirely the same.

The cadaver dissection sounded interesting in theory but mostly gross and monotonous in practice (to me and my group at least). You reaaaaally want to get one of the skinnier arms because removing the fat can take ages and is probably the worst part. It does prepare you for further cadaver dissection and anatomy in med though.

I don't remember the content or assignments being especially hard but they favoured group work and obviously there is a high chance nobody in your group wants to do any work. I also remember this one lecturer who came up with the weirdest assignment ever. He thought that we should grade each other's assignments and then also be marked on our grading. Each person's assignment was graded by three students. Your grading was automatically marked based on how close it was to the other two students'. So if they both give an assignment 9/10 and you gave it a 1 then you get a bad grade. It did not work and was just bizarre. But hopefully they have discontinued that concept...

Overall I would give it a 6/10. Didn't kill me but definitely wasn't the highlight of my week

Hey I took ANAT331 this year. It is a great paper if you're good at ANKI; it is legit all ANKI and memorizing. I'll give you a summary of the modules.

The First module is is all about the upper limb. You need to memorize a lot of muscles, blood vessels, nerves and their functions.

Module 2 is about the anatomy of the neck and spine. The content on the spine is really similar to content taught in ANAT241 and ANAT242. The content on the neck is new. You look at all the divisions and compartments of the neck and again learn the muscles, blood vessels, nerves, organs, bones and cartilage.

Module 3 looks at the muscles, blood vessels, nerves, tendons, ligaments and joints of the lower limb. You also look at some pathologies in this module.

For all three modules it's really important to focus in the labs and answer all the questions in the lab book; it personally helped me a lot with the tests and exams.

Internals:

Module 1 & 2: There are 2 OSPE's worth 10% each. OSPE's are a practical test in the lab. For these it's really important you pay attention in the lab and visit the anatomy museum to practice identifying muscles, blood vessels, nerves on the specimens there. The animated diagrams from the lecture slides help too, but everything looks different in real life!

Module 3: There's a Lab report which was done in groups. You get a structure of the lower limb and you have to write about it using information from research articles; my group aced this.

Overall it was a really fun paper for me and I felt everything I needed to know for the exam was on the slides for Module 1 & 2, but for module 3 I felt I should've looked at the lab book more. I personally found all the concepts really easy to grasp because it was just memorizing structures and then understanding what their functions are. I'd highly recommend doing this paper, but watch out for the OSPE make sure you know what everything looks like outside of the lecture slides!!! The lecturers are all goods too!

Hey just wondering did you find that MAOR202 essays/internals were marked subjectively and based off the tutor's personal preferences? Or was the spread of most of the marks pretty even?

Honestly, for the essay, i felt it was marked subjectively because some of the tutor’s comments had me confused. However, i expressed my concern to the paper co-ordinator and she reviewed my essay for me. In terms of the journals, i compared marks with other students and they were pretty even.
