'What papers should I do at UoO for graduate entry' Chat, Enquiries and Help

Thanks for your reply koochkooch.

It would great if i could get that list, i was intending to do MICR334 instead of PHSL344 as i did not fair too well with PHSL232 last year. So now quite unsure of 300 level papers for second semester!

Summer school: FORB201, HUNT233
S1: PHSL345, PHSL342, HUNT221
S2: PHSL343, ANAT332 (and optionally, you could take another easy 200 level such as MICR222 or MAOR203 to override a bad 200 level paper).

If you were to choose between the two, I would honestly pick PHSL. The amount of time required to get a really good grade in PHSL344 is relatively less than MICR334, and the course is better organised overall. I would personally try to avoid both papers altogether and pick something from the list I've given above.

Hey, my 2 cents.... anat332 and micr332 are good ones. the micro department is great to students. i did both papers and got A+s so it is possible (and I'm really not a bright fella)... just make sure you think outside the box for all the internals they set you... also make the most of the lab demonstrators - they help a LOT (imo lol). good luck.

regarding micr332 in particular (someone asked?)... theres one internal report worth 20%... just hang of the lab peoples words. the head fellow (robin simmonds) gives out a great checklist sheet you just tick off (helped me for other reports as well)... and reference heaps as well (i remember having over 45 but that might have been overkill lol).

Hey,

I've done all the micr papers youve mentioned and highly recommend them. I dont remember each individually (they all kind of mesh into one) but the micro department is brilliant. they help students a lot and actually want you in the department (:O)... this doesnt mean they spoon feed you but if you put the effort in, they will too. (also i think micr222 or micr223... theres a module by keith ireton... he repeats the module in micr332 so if you do do the micr papers consider 332 as a third year option - this may all change though, i did them in 2011).

as for the anat papers you cant go wrong with 241 and 332. iv done both and theyr quite manageable as long as you put in the work.

if you cant do math151 then iv heard math160 is good though a bit harder.

p.s. i think your on the right track... all the papers youve mentioned are ones iv done and would highly recommend. my peers struggled far more than i did in my third year so i considered myself quite lucky. always do past papers and try preparing essay answers (this worked well for me in the micro papers). good luck.

Hi.
About MICR papers, I heard 200-level papers are quite easy but 300-level papers are hard to get good marks in.
Probably different people will give me different answers but what do you think?
I'm thinking of doing MICR as my major.

oh, and it also says GENE221 is highly recommended for micr major students. What is that like? I just want to find good papers to get A+ in (or something close).
What other 200-level papers would you recommend? (other than phsl, anat, phal)
and possibly one other 300-level paper I can do along with micr papers in 3rd year?

man I'm really confused now.
I'm thinking of doing micro major but after reading few posts here i'm scared.
But you got A+ in micr332? wow

did you include research articles outside lecture materials in your final exam?
How would you know what to read in order to prepare for the finals?
and can you give me a quick example of how you would write that in exam? (or is it too much to ask?)

I'm used to memorising only the lecture materials and so far i'm doing alright (not great).

200-level HEAL anybody? (at otago)

From what i can see, phsl and anat is by far the most popular 200-papers to take for good grades.
What about HEAL?
there are HEAL211, 203, (first semester) and HEAL202 (second semester). And I'm thinking of taking 2 of them (one in each semester) in my 3rd year.
I want to hear your opinion. Is it managable to get A+ in these papers?

and besides my major papers, I'm thinking of taking one ANAT 300-level paper in my 3rd year.
Which one would be the 'easiest' ANAT paper? I heard ANAT332 is pretty good.

I've done all 3! I'd say that 202 (Health promotion) and 211 (Epidemiology) are the 2 most interesting papers, 203 is quite dry. I got 89 in both of these. I'd say an A+ is doable. It is much harder to get an A+ in these papers though than any of the very science-based ones such as Anatomy. However, the workload for the HEAL papers is very minimal throughout the semester.

In terms of 300-level ANAT papers I did 331 (Functional), 333 (Repro), 334 (Developmental) and 335 (Neuro). Most people found 331 the easiest. I hadn't done 241 though so found this harder. People I've talked to said that 332 seems pretty easy but that they tended to mark the assignments/exams much more harshly. So you felt like you did really well but then marks were disappointing. What 200-level ANATs have you done? I'd pick the 300-level ANAT paper of the subject you did best in at 200 level.
My personal preference would be ANAT335!

how important are the textbooks for ANAT 241 and MICR 221?

how important are the textbooks for ANAT 241 and MICR 221?

ANAT 241
Marieb and Hoehn "Human Anatomy and Physiology"
Young et al "Wheater's Functional Histology: A Text and Colour Atlas"

MICR 221
Brock Biology of Microorganisms

How often did anyone who studied the above papers end up using these essential textbooks. Which ones are worth getting?

Thanks.

personally I never looked at the textbook for ANAT241.
listening to the audio and making little notes on lecture slides got me through alright.
It's a pretty straight forward paper. concepts are easy but lot to memorise.

As for MICR, i'll be doing that this year. I heard lot of good things about 200-level micr and quite a few people i know got an A+ :)

when you say you got 89 in both, you mean HEAL202 and 211 only?
what about HeAL203 if you don't mind me asking?

If ANAT335 is anything like ANAT242 then I should avoid that paper because ANAT242 was one of my worst papers

wheater is a good book. barely used it tho. use it from libry its not worth buying as I only used it for first module mainly. Marieb is okay but not needed. I did use it for reference. Got 89 for it. Personally not worth either.

Brock is handy for reference, I did do readings most of the time aswell. Got 89 and 92 for MICR221 and 222. Most of the info is on the slides though. I gotit more for comfort. PM me if you want a copy.

I buy all the textbooks and then sell it. most of them I hardly use only for references and clearing up doubts. You can do without any textbooks thru uni if you like its more like just to be safe or to find stuff out thats poorly written about online etc. End of the day these papers are like anyother papers and its upto you, nothing special bout these txt books.

ANAT332 you hear is good but actually I found it hard, my second lowest mark in entire degree. I heard a lot of badthigns about this paper aswell. I thought it would be easy. 331 was much better

Talked to years above me students and they said 335 is easier than 242 but still hard. They are making it harder every year just like all the other papers

I did zero reading from textbooks for MICR and managed 89 for MICR221 and 90 for MICR223. All you need the textbooks for are the lab pre-readings, so I wouldn't bother wasting $100+ on them. I suggest you invest that money in an audio recorder and a crap load of 4-pack Vs for the all-night cram sessions you'll potentially face throughout the year.

There seems to be lot of essays for HEAL papers and they're worth quite a lot.
is there any chance i can have your old HEAL essays? if you still have electronic copies.

Textbooks for 2nd Year Biomed

Hey,

Basically, Im a 2nd year Biomed student in Otago majoring in Physiology.
I had a look around in the forum and only found stuff about which textbooks are useful etc.
Im just wondering from the veterans,
Are textbooks absolutely neccesary?
I mean in terms of *readings*
I did almost no reading in health sci and got through it without much trouble.
Will it be the same for the 2nd and 3rd year for biomed papers?

PHAL305 Otago

Hi;
Just wondering if anyone has done this paper (or is doing it this year) - any advice for the research proposal? Even through a full revisit to the lecturer I am still confused as to what exactly he is expecting with regards to the type of question we pose.. are we just suppose to just research some Q's that are yet to be answered?

Cheers

Don't even bother getting textbooks for the PHSL's particularly PHSL231 everything is on the lectures/audios - for cardio the book might be good for some concepts that I felt weren't exactly taught very clearly (I didn't read the book at all though and did ok, but I think it might have been good), i'd say at most borrow it from the library in 2nd sem if you really need to.

ANAT doesn't need any either, for rat races go to the anat museum, wheaters histology is pretty and all but for ANAT243 anyway you don't need it.
PHAL - textbooks pointless, can't comment on microbiology but I really don't think (in 2nd year anyway) you need to ever read textbooks unless the lecturer specifically tells you a particular concept that he/she won't present that is present within the book is going to be examined.
