[2020 entry and beyond] Guide to Bonded Medical Places

Can I ask here a question about movement between BMP and CSP places?
University of Adelaide has separate codes for CSP and BMP.
My preferences are CSP first, BMP second.

Let's say the UoA in first round offers 100 CSP places and 40 BMP places (made up numbers).
Some people who have been offered a CSP place sooner or later decline as they decide to accept an offer from another university making some CSP places available.
What happens to people who have not been offered CSP place in that round and accepted BMP place?
Will they stay with a BMP place and available CSP spots will go to others or do they move "up the ladder" and the top ranked of them will get a CSP place offer?

What happens in other unis?

They upgrade those with BMPs to CSPs and then offer BMPs to those lower on the list, generally speaking.

Hello.

I read that 18 months of your RoS can be completed pre-fellowship but I don't completely understand what pre-fellowship even means.
Does that mean I can complete 1 year of the RoS as an intern at a rural hospital?
And if I do that, is it possible to go through my residency at a metropolitan hospital? or do I have to do that in the same hospital I completed my internship.

Also I think I read BMPs can work at areas classified as DWS so I went on the Health Workforce locator (Health Workforce Locator) and looked at DWS for specialists and the only places that werent allowed were the very very metropolitan areas in blue (located in perth btw). (Yellow part is classified as DWS for specialists)

This seems a bit weird to me that BMPs can work pretty much anywhere around perth to complete the RoS if you're a specialist.
If this is true, does that mean I can just become a specialist (I think that's what fellowship means right?) and just work 3 years in any of these areas in yellow? (assuming I can get a place there)

Sorry if that was a bit confusing but thanks in advance

Hey Jason, sorry for the delayed response here - I have only just read this post.

Attaining fellowship essentially means being a specialist, yes. After you've attained fellowship, you are qualified to work as a consultant in that specialty (though this doesn't mean you'll get a consultant job in the location of your choosing, or at all). Yes, you can complete your internship in a rural hospital and this will count towards fulfilling your RoS requirements. You would have to complete another two years minimum after that, though, and 18 months or more would need to be post-fellowship for you to fulfill your BMP requirements.
And if I do that, is it possible to go through my residency at a metropolitan hospital? or do I have to do that in the same hospital I completed my internship.
Yes, you just need to get an RMO job at a metropolitan hospital (and note that this won't count towards your RoS unless said hospital is classified as DWS).
If this is true, does that mean I can just become a specialist (I think that's what fellowship means right?) and just work 3 years in any of these areas in yellow? (assuming I can get a place there)
Yes, if it's classified as a DWS region. Note that DWS classification is updated regularly and what is classified as DWS now may not be by the time you graduate. In fact, I've read that in the past there were issues where a BMP graduate would work in a DWS region for 6 months, and them working there meant that it lost its DWS classification, so they couldn't continue to work in said region to fulfill the remaining time on their contract. Whether this would be an issue moving forward, I'm not sure - but definitely worth being aware that DWS areas can and do change.

anyone know any odds of a bonded wsu place being upgraded to an unbonded in later rounds. ofc im not expecting any accurate figures, but is it heard of?

Congratulations to all those who have/ just got offers, and good luck to those waiting!! You got this!!!!
So I need some help with uni offers...
I got unbonded for UQ and Adelaide but bonded for UNSW. I live in NSW, but I still don't know which one to choose...? Its like each uni has its pros and cons rn (e.g. if I take unbonded I have to move interstate for 7/6 years, bonded lets me stay at home).
if you accept the bonded one, you have to work in rural area at least for 3 yrs and you may have family at that time.So i would like to have unbonded one.

or you could pay out the bond for $100k...

I believe it would be more than $100k. Usually it is $200-300k.

Its cheaper than you think

Alright, so you guys reckon just keep the medical seat in my state, and pay of how much ever RoSO I don't finish? Because I know the more you finish the less you have to pay back the government..?

Its up to you. Keep in mind that you have alot less control over where your going to live than you think as a doctor, any your RoS can be in urban areas as a specialist, so it may not be too bad. Check out the DWS map and have a look.

The latest info we have, officially from the gov, pay back is about $18k per year of med course. Roughly the same as cost of living away and you get to graduate a year earlier.

Also, does BMP mean I can't work in certain specialties (what specialties are these exactly), or that metropolitan hospital's won't take me in because they think I would have to leave to complete my BMP?

nope, that is not the case.

Thank you for all your help guys!! Also, does anyone know if there is any way the BMP contract affects students who are studying at UNSW? e.g. allocated certain hospitals for clinical rotation and later interships etc (is this a thing, or am I just flipping out)?

(edited to remove misinformation from another user)

afaik if you have a Kensington offer, during med school you're under no obligation to do placements rurally even with a BMP
