Since WSU doesn't hold a separate round of interviews for interstate applicants they don't have a formal 2nd round of offers

In the 1st round presumably WSU will send to UAC a *ranked* list of its applicants for place offers. UAC will start from top down but skip those who also get a higher-pref UNSW offer, so WSU's last (110th) place may go to one who ranks say 150th.

When some of these WSU offers are later declined (maybe after getting a home state offer), without a 2nd round WSU could give them out as direct top-up offers rather than via UAC. The big question is will WSU give them to the 151st, 152nd etc or will they bother to check if any of the 1st-round skipped ones now want a second dip?

Is it possible that WSU is not obligated/does not have access to the preferences of students? In which case, they might just assume that those that did not want a WSU offer in the first round won't want one in the second round either.

That's what I highly suspect. WSU is not responsible for preferences, that's UAC's job. When it's one week to the start of semester and WSU has say 10 top-up offers to give out, they wouldn't be keen to waste time contacting *all* the skipped applicants who have got a higher pref (to ask if they still want WSU). Much simpler to go straight to the next in line 151st 152nd...

Preference what you WANT to do. If you want to do the JMP more than UNSW then go for gold. Putting a university at a lower preference makes no bearing on how likely you are to get into the course. I, for one, have put JMP first, but I'm from Newcastle so it makes sense.

Easier or harder, doesn't matter - put your favourite uni on the top spot. If worst comes to worst and you don't get your top preference, you can get your second one. There's nothing to lose from putting a "harder" (but more favourable) uni on top.

If I accept this, will I be ineligible for the medicine courses? What should I do? I want to do the course only if I was not selected for any medicine course, and I'll only know that in January. Accepting the offer won't make you ineligible for medicine offers in later rounds. Just be sure to remove it from your preferences or move it below all your other preferences after you have accepted.

It partly depends whether you get a UNSW interview in the (a) locals round December or the (b) interstates round January.

(a) If you fail to qualify for a UNSW place but get WSU you will be offered WSU in the 1st offer round.

(b) If you qualify for WSU in the 1st offer round, since you have not interviewed at UNSW UAC's past practice was to hold back the WSU offer. Reason being if you later get UNSW UAC have the WSU spot in hand to offer to another applicant. If you don't get UNSW you automatically get the held-back WSU.

That's past practice, I don't know what the current practice is. UAC may give WSU to you 1st round (despite its lower pref) regardless of UNSW outcome later.

In the matter of managing the UAC preferences, I understand that JMP releases their offers scheduled in January Round 1. Maybe other universities are doing the same.
How does an applicant list their preferences in this situation? My 'plan B' is Engineering so do I then list Engineering as my first preference for the December Round and JMP as my second for the later rounds?

I think JMP needs to be above your other courses to be considered for the January round.

So you can list Engineering first for the December round, but then between rounds you need to switch JMP to your first preference. Honestly though I would just put Engineering second. If you're not eligible for your first preference (JMP) they'll bypass that and see if you're eligible for your second (Engineering).

Have your UAC ranking in the order of your uni preference. Simple as that. If you didn't/don't get interviews from UNSW or JMP, then obviously you'd want to change the preference to WSU first. But even if you don't, it won't matter.

Without having done the interview there you won't be eligible for a 1st round offer from UNSW or JMP. No point putting them at higher pref for the 1st offer round so put WSU 1st. Then change UNSW/JMP to higher if that's what you actually prefer, for the 2nd offer round.

Instates should NOT do this since (assuming you prefer UNSW most) you could qualify for both offers in the 1st round but only get WSU. UAC would allocate your UNSW spot to another applicant, no guarantee you will get another in the 2nd round.

The schools will send their ranked offer lists to UAC first, UAC works out the preferences then releases them together on 10th Jan.

Not at all, once you accept WSU (which requires you to enrol as well) it's locked in.
