I just received a conditional offer for USYD Med via the E12 SRS scheme!
Since the offers for this course come out on 23 Dec (Round 2), I was wondering if placing USYD as my first preference for Round 2 would jeopardise my chances for UNSW and WSU. If I place USYD as my first preference but swap UNSW to first preference for the Jan round, there should be no issue, right?
Is my assumption correct in that UNSW and WSU offers only come out in Jan?
As a side note, I'm a NSW school leaver.

That’s correct, yep. After the Dec 23rd round there will be a few days where UAC ‘opens’ again for preference swaps. At that point, you should swap UNSW to the top if you’d prefer that.

My invitation to attend the WSU interviews states that "offers will be made to applicants who have Western Sydney University - Doctor of Medicine as their 1st preference on their UAC application." I would rather a JMP offer than a WSU offer, and as such I have preferenced JMP first. However, I would like to know the implications of not preferencing WSU first...does this mean I will be ruled out from a potential WSU offer? Does preferencing WSU first mean that I would miss out on a potential JMP offer?

Nope, you won’t be ruled out from getting a WSU offer. The idea of having preferences is so that applicants get to put universities in orders they would like to attend. If you do get JMP offer in the first round, you won’t get a WSU offer or vice versa. You can always change your preference in subsequent rounds for multiple offers. Usually you’d only do the latter if you are unsure about where you want to study.

As you’re a rural applicant, if you’re eligible for a WSU offer, and it’s your first preference, you could get this on Dec 23rd. JMP don’t participate in that round so you would then need to switch your preferences so that JMP is top for the first Jan round.

The WSU invitation states that "we will be making offers to successful rural applicants in the January Offer Round 1."

So it seems for me, both programs will be making their offers in the first Jan round. Meaning I won't have an opportunity to swap preferences for different rounds. I'm still somewhat confused....the WSU email implies that offers will only be made to those applicants who preference WSU first, so logic says I will be ruling out a potential offer from WSU if i preference JMP first?

This^ is simply a carry-over of UAC's old practice of withholding a lower-pref offer if you have a higher pref still pending (in a later offer round). It seems UAC is no longer doing this i.e. higher prefs that are not part of an offer round are not relevant to that round and WSU does not need to say that.

That said, simplest to cover all bases for you is to put WSU first for the Dec offer round, then immediately move JMP to higher (if you actually prefer JMP) for the Jan offer round. In the Jan round, if you "fail" JMP but qualify for WSU you are guaranteed to get WSU despite not 1st pref.

This is new, thanks for the update. If they’re not participating in the Dec round either, then you just need to make sure you have them listed as you prefer them for that first round in Jan. Good luck

1. As a NSW local applicant, since all the NSW Med Schools (with the exception of Usyd) seem to be giving out offers during January round 1, is it fine for me to not have any of them on my UAC preferences for December Round 2, and add them in afterwards? (Just taking into account absolutely bombing the HSC since iirc UAC preferences can't be changed in time for December Round 2 after ATAR comes out)

2. Does anybody know what's happening with what appears to be a second round of assessments for USyd Dent? Is it for interstates/internationals only? I was under the impression that there would only be a single round of interview invites & offers (December round 2).
This was on their website:

• Sun 15 December 2019: Close of adding the BSc/DMD as a preference to be considered for the Assessment on 20 Dec
• Tue 17 December 2019: ATARs released
• Fri 20 December 2019: Assessment day - assessment dates are not negotiable and eligible candidates must attend the first assessment day after the release of their ATAR results.
• Mon 23 December 2019: UAC December Round 2 offers released
• Tue 14 January 2020: Close of adding the BSc/DMD as a preference to be considered for the Assessment on 20 January
• Mon 20 Jan 2020: Assessment day - assessment dates are not negotiable and eligible candidates must attend the first assessment day after the release of their ATAR results.
• TBC Jan 2020: Assessment via Skype for international applicants.
• Thu 23 Jan 2020: UAC January Round 2 offers released

Answering your first question, you won't be able to add JMP for January Round 1 as it says "You can add this course to your preferences until Sunday 1 December 2019" on the UAC page.

1. There's a rule by the TACs applicable to many med/dent courses - they cannot be added after the Sept application closing date. You need to check if UAC has this rule.

2. I believe the USyd 2nd interview round is for students who won't get their school results until January, like IB and NZ (due to NZQA's ATAR conversion).

If you genuinely want JMP Med more than CSU Dent, then leave them as they are and you'll get one or the other (depending on eligibility) come the first Jan round. If you're keen on having an offer of anything before Christmas (which some people are, understandably!), then you could have CSU first for now, and then change your preferences as soon as UAC opens again after the CSU round. There's some confusion as to whether CSU needs to be first preference for a December round offer to be possible, but this would remove any uncertainty and not jeopardise your JMP chances.

On the topic of whether the university can see your preferences, I have received 'personalised' admission pages from UNSW in particular that actually does show that they know that I put UNSW as my third preference at the time that the email was sent. If the university knows where my preferences lie, can this not then be extrapolated to the interviewers since we don't know what they are briefed on?

That's what I have believed all along, the unis can know your prefs if they want to. But they are not to let that influence their interview/offer selection. If they do and it's discovered they would be subject to litigation and reputation damage.

Each school uses dozens of external interviewers, if something is deliberately done incorrectly there's always the risk one of them might spill the beans.

I believe they can see your preference on UAC.

Applicants who have put at least one ANU program as a first, second or third preference when applying for admission through the Universities Admissions Centre (NSW & ACT) will also be considered.

True, UNSW does create a personalised page, itemising your preferences with latest updates. Its not a surprise, we all leave a digital footprint.
