so basically, with a GPA of 7.5 or 7.75 in the core subjcts, i dont really have a shot at gettin in unless i hav a miraculously brilliant interview..? LoL... sounds gud haha
and think they do still have auto-entry for the 09 med course (according to michelle chung), but yeah its nxt 2 impossible to get
o well... grad entry it is haha

If you get a GPA of 7.75, i wouldn't say your chances are good, but it's not that bad either. Keep persevering! :)

Also, aren't they increasing the number of MBChBII spots again? So your chances might not be too bad. (geeez thanks to a government that only cares about churning out doctors, but not the quality of medical students' learning experiences).

20 is the theoretical number I think (don't quote me though)...But in reality it's likely to be less since the university has been over-enrolling anyway in the past few years.

Incorrect. Cohort for MBChB II this year at Auckland has already increased by 20. The 40 new places (20 at Otago and 20 at Auckland) started this year (2008). In 2009 it is expected that there will be a similar number of students enrolled into MBChB II which I think stands at roughly 175-180 as opposed to my MBChB III class of 151

Oh right, so the increase has already happened. Thanks for correcting.

oh true... so do either of u know anyone (non MAPAS or ROMPE) students who got in with a GPA of 7.5? because everyone ive asked has had a GPA of at least 8.5...

I personally know of one non-MAPAS, non-ROMPE student who got in with 7.25. He got a brilliant UMAT score, and I would guess he did very well in the interview too (at least A).
But people like him are less than rare!

Auckland- UMAT scores

was wondering, could anyone help us out with what kind of criteria they need for umat in auckland? do they look at raw score or percentile?
54-53-54
overall grade: 54
percentile: 72

possibly one of the lowest ive heard so far... is there any hope?

still hope

akl doesn't really take UMAT into account too much.
I know someone in medschool who got 58 percentile.
As long as ur GPA is high and u do awesome in interview, you'll be sweet. :)

Auckland looks at raw score
people in my class have scores ranging from 130s to 240s so it doesn't really matter!

lol. man auckland uni's UMAT system is a bit dodgey.
I remember the dean didn't really care for the UMAT when he came to our school couple years back.

Lord Garlic: What about GPA wise?
I know the cut off for interviews were 7.5 but here's where the story varies:

Some people say that you are first ranked on all the 8 papers then give interviews based on the 8. after interviews only your 4 core papers are looked at. (this personally doesn't make any sense)

Another story is that only your core papers are counted and interviews offered accordingly.

Also, some say once you get an interview because you're past the GPA stage u just have to do well in the interview and you're in, others say they still look at the GPA after the interview stage.

clarification?? :P long question, but there are so many rumours surrounding med school, it always makes me laugh. :) :)

With a GPA of 9, and a UMAT score of 64, what do you think I will need in the interview to have a good chance of getting into med?

Ya I noticed they don't come online much :( I found out that its 45/45/10 weighting for the scores from each section but I was wondering if they used the scaled scores or percentiles instead which noone seems to definitely know.

OK, so here I am.

Otago takes the 45/45/10 weightage, however, its so confusing as to whether they take raw or scaled...we have had instances where the department has said one is taken into consideration, then...ask them again, and its the other!

quite a lot of postgrads have GPA <7.5 I know a few in 4th year who have got in with GPAs of 6.5 and average UMATs. Non MAPAS/Non ROMPE

frankly MAPAS/ROMPE is just as competitive these days. I remember last year ROMPE also had a 2:1 ratio of interviews:places. Not sure about the MAPAS stats

They say about twice as many people as there are places get interviews. Is that for each type of entry? Say, there are about 70 places for undergraduates, non-ROMPE, non-MAPAS, does that mean 140 will get interviews? Or does it mean that since there are 155 places in total, 310 regardless of category, will get interviews?

I can't really tell you to be honest. All I can say is expect roughly 2 people to be interviewed per place available

Dentistry interveiw

hey,
i managed to get an interveiw for dent, so wondering if that is a decent indication of whether my umat is good for med?...

Hey Marsden I'm in HSFY too. Interviews for dent were given for the top 250 UMAT scores out of everyone who applied and also had minimum cutoffs for each section around the 50 mark (scaled score). Considering there are 150+ spots for med, and that some people want to do dent instead of med, your UMAT should easily be good enough as long as your paper marks also place you within that top 150 or so range.
