Thanks for your reply..not sure I quite get what you mean by 15 X though ..I'm having a slow day. =)
I'd like to get an idea of the grades required before I start first year if possible, they say you need a B+ for an interview but obviously its going to be higher than that for placement. I have a degree in psychology but a BA seems like a walk in the park compared to this =)

Any information you could pass on regarding grade averages would be so appreciated.

Mods: I feel this is a bit irrelevant to this thread so please feel free to split it or something.

Jessica1985: What I meant by 15x was simply 'a hundred and fifty something'; sorry for the lack of clarity.

You will being doing 8 papers in Health Science, you need B+ average across these 8 papers to be eligible for consideration, but only 4 of these papers will contribute directly towards your ranking for selection into Medical school.

Most students who get into medicine through the overlapping 1st year will have a mixture of A+'s and A's in these four papers. It would be reasonable to aim for GPA of 8.xx across these 4 papers, although it is still possible to be accepted with lower GPAs (eg around 7.25 or 7.50) provided you do very well in the interview.

On a side note, since you already have a BA, you could just apply as a graduate student. But if you feel your GPA from your BA isn't competitive, then Health Science or Biomed (the one i prefer because having so many population health papers can be a pain in the butt :p) overlapping first year is probably your best bet.

hm, well, i know that this year, a student who had a gpa of 8 in their core papers didn't get in, but apparently, their umat score wasn't great and i have no idea how the interview went. i don't know how helpful this information but feel free to interpret it however you want. as i said, all i know for sure is the gpa..all else is very vague.

I know students with perfect GPAs (9.00) who did not get in. As I mentioned earlier, interviews are very very influential. Also, let's not forget that it's possible to get the "auto-boot" at an Auckland Med interview. If you get that, no high GPA/ UMAT will ever get you accepted.

exactly so if ur gna stand a good chance of getting u need atleast an 8.25-9 GPA in core papers and an avg interview ..... its possible to get an interview with GPA's of 7.25 and above .... heapsa ma mates gt interviews ....bt then its too much pressure on th interview and u pretty much havta ace it which is realy hard to do... so its safer to go in with a higher GPA

A high GPA can only do good, but each to their own.
For some people the interview is probably the easiest part of admission.

was for me, i loved every minute of it. :)

Lol have to say I am kinda relieved it seems the interview is pretty crucial... though if one was having a bad day might be bloody awful.
All that hard work and it comes down to 20 minutes of talking =)

Congrats btw to Saviola! =)

that's exactly what i found so frustrating..for all the years (or year) of hard work, a mere half hour could basically decide your fate (so to speak). but that being said, i reckon i had had a pretty bad day.. but maybe they make a tiny allowance for nerves or whatever. And generally speaking, i would imagine that they would only automatically reject you if you came across as an absolutely undesirable candidate. basically, just try and get through your year as best you can. try not to be weighed down by all the negative feedback you get about itnerviews.

Hi everyone, do any of you know what the chances are of getting into BHSc at Auckland University for the 2009 intake with 6 CIE IGCSE subjects (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths, English, Computer studies - all A*'s), 2 EDEXCEL A-levels (Physics and maths - will be sitting for the exams in june 2008) + CIE AS English (sitting for the exam in October/November 2008)?

IGCSEs are not university entrance qualifications so they won't be looked it by the admissions department of the university. It's a bit odd for you to be doing GCEs from 2 different examination boards....any particular reason? Your exams are so fragmented that the uni of auckland might not accept you. Why not sit the CIE A levels in physics and maths? Also what's the rush to get into university haha? Enjoy year 13, don't skip it

Well the thing is, I live in Dubai right now but I'm a NZ citizen so I plan on going there to study medicine mainly because all the universities here are crappy and not recognized internationally. So I did my CIE IGCSE's at one school but they didn't have yr 12 so I had to shift to another school that conducts the EDEXCEL examinations. Oh and they don't provide AS English so I have to sit for the exam at the British Council in November (I'm doing CIE because EDEXCEL doesn't have a November session). Does it really matter though which board I got my qualifications from?

And yeah lol, I want to get into uni as soon as possible! One year will make a huge difference! Plus this country sucks and I miss NZ heaps!

Lol well done, ashwini on reading the guidebook! I haven't looked at it since I first flipped though it when I got it. Am I the only one who was completely in awe of the afternoon session and all that it entailed?? I mean, how cool is the MSLC (is that what it's called). I love the way it's been set out! Lol, yay for grassroots and the freebies! I'm slightly unsure as to what I should expect of the coming week...a bit scared to be quite honest..currently steeling myself to prepare for the worst. Ive got to say, though, that most people I meet seem to be fully prepared for the journey that is going to be medicine, while my plan is just to take it as it comes..should I be doing some manner of preparation?

Whoever claims that they are 'fully prepared' for the 'journey' on the first day of uni is kidding themselves big time. No need to do any special physical preparation, just be prepared to feel overwhelmed by the monstrous workload that is second year once lectures start.

Could someone suggest how I can get involved in the local community? I feel I want to do something but not make it look like I'm doing it for the sake of doing it for the interview.

I feel I am capable of giving something back to my community but I don't know where to begin.

rest homes, st john, friends of emergency department, maybe volunteering to teach at a community centre, coaching sports teams, the possibilities are endless. Just think outside the square
