Hey guys I just found out I got in today under grad entry. But... I have some good news for those on the waiting list.... I'm going to be declining my offer as soon as I have the written offer from Flinders University in Adelaide (just to be safe). So as soon as the AUckland staff get back from their christmas break one of those people will have a nice surprise! Congrats to everyone who got in and to any undergrads who didn't get in- there are so many options for grad entry so you will definitely get there one day if you want it :)

Wow thats great Katie! Best of luck for you at flinders in the future!

Ooo you just brightened my christmas eve!! I might not have to escape to the "duurty south" as I keep getting reminded of. Good luck with your studies in Aussie :D Thats a big achievement. Here's hoping I'm number one on the waitlist then haha :P

Ahh 4 of my friends have been placed on the waiting list! so annoying, i wanted them to make it so badly, plus im meant to be flating with 3 of them.

Any ideas about how big the waiting list is?

oh dear :/ the waiting list I've heard can be up to 10 people? at least 1 will get in since katielou is declining her offer. Also I have another friend who is unsure if med is what he truly wants at this stage so there may be another.

Ask your mates to contact admissions and ask

Take what I say with a grain of salt but I would be weary of declining NZ med school offers for australian ones... simply because [if you are an NZ citizen] you will end up 2nd tier for hospital applications in both australia and NZ (this will only affect your applications for intern). This may be even more of a problem for you guys just entering medicine as you are right smack in the middle of the 'medical student tsunami' - where I believe the australian government can no longer guarantee that there will be enough intern spots for the graduating medical school class each year.

Maybe what I've heard has been exagerrated.. but it is something to think about.

Thanks. I've heard of things like this before but i was under the impression that you are equally in line for internship places in NZ- it's in Australia where a few problems may be encountered. I know it may be a bit harder for me but there are a number of reasons why I have chosen to go to Flinders instead of Auckland and I will try and ressolve the issues I may have when they come up in 4 years time. 4 years is quite a while and things could change anyway.

If you are talking about year 2 med, the faculty enrols you automatically. You don't have to do anything. But the papers for MBChB II are:

Semester 1
203 - Musculoskeletal System
205 - Digestive System
207 - Professional Development I
209A - Principles of Medicine

Semester 2
202 - Cardiovascular System
204 - Respiratory System
206 - Genitourinary System
209B - Principles of Medicine

You should get a letter explaining all this next week sometime I presume

realistically you really don't need to buy many books at all

You can get away with 1 anatomy textbook (Moores or Drakes) and that's it. The rest you can short loan from philson since you don't really use it much. A physiology textbook could be handy (Guyton and Hall is my pick) but aside from that you don't really need any others.

Also robbins and cotran can come in handy throughout the year.

hm i just looked on the ubs website and it shows the books and prices I presume as at S2. Can anyone tell me if that is in fact the entire book list for the whole of year 2. Also, I bought biochemistry by campbell and farrell last year..should i sell it back or will it be of use to me this year?

lol that book is a piece of rubbish in my opinion. Even last year I opened it once or something.....

There actually isn't that much biochemistry in the courses. The biochemistry in digestive system is covered in depth by the notes barling and co. have prepared.

Don't buy books until you have tried them out from short loan

Yup out of the first year textbooks Tortora and Derrickson is probably the only book you will find helpful, and even that isn't essential...Only time you will need it is to brush up on the first year stuff, especially when it comes to the kidney physiology in the genitourinary paper in semester 2

And completely agree with LG, make sure you get the book out of the library and try it out before you buy it. Also might be a good idea to check overseas for cheaper prices if your going overseas or know someone who is willing to get it for you...I saved a LOT of money last year that way

Hi again, I'm interested in knowing if its possible to transfer from otago HSFY or Biomed auckland straight into an Australian medical school (so you spend the 1st yr of tertairy study in nz and jump straight into med school in aussie)

Cases of this happening involved Umelb and UNSW. I have no idea about the requirements (gpa+umat) but I suspect they would be very high.

And also, does anyone know when CIE results are released to australian tertiary authorities? I'm a bit surprised that I didn't get any offers from melbourne this morning, because I put down commerce as my 3rd option and my UAI (converted from cie points) is surely higher than 98.00 (the required uai is 92.00)

I put down medicine and dent as the 1st and 2nd options if that matters. umat raw was 158, so I knew I wouldn't be accepted into the first two courses, but I was sure commerce was secured

I don't know anything about CIE results but, with regard to your first question, have a look here. It's a table summing up the entry requirements for Australian university.

If you spend a year of tertiary study in NZ (or in Aus for that matter) you're considered for non-standard entry to Australian med schools. The table has column detailing requirements for non-standards.

At some universities the requirements are very high (e.g. at UMelb), fairly high at UNSW as well, but at places like UNewcastle and UWS the requirements are the same as for high school students and at UTAS it's arguably easier to get in as non-standard. So have a look :)

Not sure what the situation is now with CIE results. Back when i applied 3 years ago I had to send in CIE results myself. Was such a hassle.... From memory, CIE results don't come out until after main round offers are out in most (if not all) state in Australia. So even if they send the results directly to australian tertiary admission centres, you won't get an offer until 2nd round/late round. You might want to just give the Melb Uni and VTAC a call just to see what's going on.

How did you manage to find the conversion for CIE points to and ENTER score? Just be aware each admission centre has diffferent procedures for processing/converting CIE results. Things might have changed, but i don't think unis in victoria have an agreed system on conversion of CIE results a few years ago, unlike in NSW.
