calm your tone jimbob, that's completely unneccesary. As far as I'm concerned, siftyboy might actually be a clinical psychologist. There is no way you could have known all the grads in OLY1 anyways so you should give him/her a break. Just calm down and wait till the 5th then call the university. There are always people who don't accept the offer because they get dual offered auckland/otago or auckland/australia so you just have to be patient

Unfortunately his tone and comments are justified. Jimbob, I have PM'd you a explanation of my actions, and will leave it to you to share with the others if you wish. This will be my last post.

anybody know if we were supposed to have received the Hep B vaccine when we were little?

also what textbooks do you MBCHB guys recommend to buy since I don't really feel like spending $2000 on all the ones listed on the uni bookshop site?

The uni will give you a free blood test around orientation day, and you'll find out then. From the people I've asked, it's a pretty random distribution of who's immune and who's not, and that applies especially to Hep B and MMR.

As for textbooks, Clinically Oriented Anatomy is pretty good, and while Grey's is easier on the eyes and brain, from my experience I think its too simplified

A lot of studets also go for Netter's Anatomy flash cards. I found them helpful as did alot of other students, especially before bed

Other than that you're pretty set. In semester 2 you will be advised by Louiselle to buy a book on respiratory physiology. Chances are by then you'll only be bothered to read it once considering all the other stuff you need to worry about. Best option is to get it off the library early

I myself got Guyton and Hall's physilogy textbook ($180). It's a really good reference ESPECIALLY for second semester papers 206 and 210. I'd imagine that it's that kind of book that youll probably use every now and then throughout your career. Same goes for Pathalogic basis of disease, which is probably most useful in 4th year onward

Well, lucky for you govpop! You will only need to buy Clinically Oriented Anatomy, which will become known as "Moore's" to you all next year. I remember last year I wanted to buy heaps of textbooks, but all I needed was Moores. This year I might buy Robbins and Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease, but only out of interest.

why does everyone recommend moores? it used to be the textbook of choice when blyth was the anatomy lecturer back in my day since all his exam questions would come from it. Drakes (Grey's Anatomy for Students) is what I would actually recommend (I own both so I can actually comment on this). Drake's manages to teach the anatomy in a more simplified fashion with diagrams that are colourful and make sense. Moore's tends to use diagrams which are grey and mottled and takes 3 paragraphs to explain something that takes 1 to explain in greys.

My strategy for 2nd years: Buy drakes, short loan moores before exams (there are a bazillion copies in the philson). From moores, you can study the blue clinical boxes. Actually if anyone wants a moore's, i'm selling my 5th edition 2nd hand, let me know haha

with the respiratory phuysiology book; borrow it from the philson

for general physiology I also recommend guyton and hall

do the editions matter for the textbooks?

i was planning to just go all short loan again like I did this year. lol much more cost efficient

also has anyone else paid for the AUMSA membership? i know people will be enjoying their holiday and all but i still haven't gotten a confirmation email back yet :S and i sent the money last week

ahhh

I just phoned tanya and asked what position I was on the graduate waitlist: 19/25 :(
my final gpa was 8.563, and my interview score was 7.5/10...

she said that last year a decent amount of people got in off the waitlist, but so far only 1 graduate has declined an offer.

Interesting.

I called and Tanya wouldn't give me an exact position other than around 15 to 20 odd. Also wouldn't give me my interview score. When asked whether my pending aegrotat on my GE paper had any bearing on the decision, she then said she couldn't answer that, but conceded that quite a few OLY1 with a core GPA of 8.75 (same as mine) got offered. Not understanding why I can occupy a place on the waitlist 15 to 20 odd, when Mongiatti said earlier in the year that the waitlist for OLY1 was only around 5, which is a number confirmed by others in this forum.

Also I accept my questioning of siftyboy may have been curt, but believe that my questions were justified. As it turns out from the message that was sent to me, siftyboy is not a clinical psychologist, was not offered a place into medicine at Auckland so therefore never declined said place, and apologises to everyone for the deception.

Did he give any reason as to why he posted what he did? [/OFFTOPIC]

Agree with lordgarlic, depends on what you like I think

If you like reading pages and pages (and pages...) of text saying that this is anterior and inferiorlateral to whatever and you can orientate that in your head then Moore's is good

There are loads of ways to learn anatomy, just find a way that suits you

I hated Moore's and just used it for the clinical boxes because they were in the exam

Just like to say i feel for those of you that are on the wait list I know first hand how much it sucks but at least Auckland is up front and gives you a rank number. Otago admissions where absolutely shocking they say nothing at all. I got an offer on the 21st of Jan and my friend who was wait listed in Auckland got an offer a couple of days before I did. Take it for what its worth and good luck to all of you!

Qbob - On man - that's insane. If I got 10/10 for my interview (but not auto entry) then I would come out JUST infront of you in the overall ranking. I have no idea what sort of spread the overall scores have. But even if I was the last offered grad place - that would mean there were 19 people btwn you and I over a couple of percent......I'd love to know how it all works... I'm really sorry you're in this situation. It totally sucks considering your GPA & I've not heard of a grad with such a high GPA missing out in previous years (not to say it hasn't happened). Did you do OLY1 and apply as an undergrad? I did & so can sympathise with your frustration... things will work themselves out one way or another....surely......

And as far as siftyboy goes - bizarre.....I've read a few things on these booards that just don't add up. I guess that's what the internet is all about.

Jimbob - nah, you weren't harsh. I agree that you if you'd kept your ear to the ground last year you would know of a grad in OLY1 with those circumstances. I am an older students (with kids and stuff) and it turns out most of my year knew 'of' me - just cause it's a little more unusual.... so good for you for clarifying that - also, who knows what else s/he may of come up with had you not 'nipped it in the bud'!!!!! Don't mess with you, is the moral of that story ;-)))

I guess Moore's is just like an Auckland med school tradition. Blyth is gone, but examiners are lazy and even if there are new lecturers teaching the same subject a lot of the time they just take questions from previous years anyway.

I reckon an anatomy textbook is all you need to buy, I liked netters flashcards/the book too. Everything else you can get from the philson. To be honest, apart from anatomy, if you have enough time to be studying a text book, I would suggest that you're not studying the actual lecture enough! They're really only to help you if you really don't understand the lecture at all

Qbob - when you called Tanya, did she just give you all the information when you asked, or did you have to badger a bit?? I contacted her again today, and she still refused to give me an interview score, or confirm my waitlist position. When pressed as to why, and why others had gotten the interview scores etc, she replied that the Medical Director would collate this information in a letter for me to be sent in two-four weeks. I'm guessing that this letter will be the kiss-of-death to my aspirations of getting into medicine for 2011.

Thanks for all the replies guys

I guess it comes down to Gray's for clarity vs moore's for those blue clinical boxes.

My dilemma is that I like to have a home copy of everything I need cos I hate studying at uni. I only work well at home because I can't work without some background noise (i'm weird, i know)

Judging from the totally cramped study conditions around exam time last year at Grafton I don't think you'll have any problem finding background noise at uni!!!!!!!!

That said, I do understand your preference for studying at home. I like to have easy access to food, the loo etc....From what I've heard and read about the timetable for 2nd years it doesn't sound as though heading home for half days of study will be that easy. Lectures seem to get spread over the whole day with 1 -3 hour breaks in between...so we may find ourselves stuck at uni alot more than we have before.....

No, I just politely asked her. It probably helped that I phoned at 11am on the 5thh (i.e. it was probably quiet).

I also believe that she told me because she thinks that it's unlikely that I get a spot off the waitlist. Knowing that I am 19th on the list has been helpful as I have now enrolled to do my Master of Science (for which I obtained a $20,000 scholarship). yay ?
