Yeah, SSO is way better than nDeva once you figure it out.

Hmm, I was kind of hoping that once I enrolled, I'd be able to see my timetable for the year, but some of the lecture times are "TBA" and then what's with the optional labs?? Where does that fit in?? So, yeah , it doesn't really tell me anything lol. Hopefullly it doesn't change too much, cos atm on fridays in the first semester I only have one lecture :) woot.

I still haven't payed for either AUMSA or freshers... I don't know if I"m gonna join AUMSA just yet.... but I'll def see you guys at freshers! Well some of you...

you will get a timetbale on your first day. every week is different hence there is no generic timetable on SSO

Tēnā koe,

re: MBChB application – Wait list applicants

This email is to inform you that all places allocated for the MBChB programme have been filled for the 2011 intake. You will remain on the wait list (unless you would like to be removed) until Wednesday 23 February 2011. If for any reason student/s withdraw from the programme, we will make contact with you a.s.a.p via phone and email.

Mauri ora,
Medical Admissions Team.

I got the same jimbob. I went to see Michelle and she said I was now third on the waitlist (I was 19th).
(so 16 people got places off the waitlist)

She said it was unlikely for me to get a spot now.

So I assume I must of being 1,2,4 etc on waitlist. Still haven't been told what my position was, other than to say that the aegrotat for the GE paper did affect my admission. Anyway, no point crying over spilt milk.

BTW Congratulations on the offer to Otago qbob.

to the older med students.. is it worthwhile getting a laptop for med school?

do you have lots of online assessments etc/ write reports/ use internet frequently to look up stuff

thanks

A few (~5) students bring laptops to class, which is how they take notes. Otherwise everything can be done on the IC computers.

I found a recorder useful last year, because my bus rides were so long and I had nothing to do (I get sick if I read on the bus) so I listened to the lectures of the day. It helped to kill the time, and I think I remembered stuff from the lectures better.

I used a recorder mainly to recap stuff (maybe a few minutes of each lecture) that I needed clarification on.
I found it useful as a 'backup' tool, so that if you miss some important detail or useful explanation/analogy, you can just go back to the appropriate section of the lecture, rather than listening to the whole lecture again, which is limitedly useful imo.

Auckland OLY1 (BSc/BHSc) 2011 chat/enquiries

Hi~ what are the differences between BSc biomed and health science at Auckland uni???? like.... the degree of difficulty, work load, related careers, class envionment....etc I have been offered a place in both of the courses but don't know which one to choose!!!!! T.T please help me!!!!!!!!!!! PS. i'm not going to apply for medicine

If you have no plans of applying for med, then you need to look carefully at the two degrees you have applied for. They are wildly different. I am surprised you are interested enough in both to apply.....

I can only talk about the BHSc which I have just graduated from. It is a degree in public health - which is a discipline (& movement really) that looks at the social determinants of a populations health. Things like income, housing, education, environment etc and tries to make changes at that level to prevent negative health outcomes. It is very political and also involves health promotion to encourage better lifestyle choices.

Public health professionals are employed by universities, local councils, national policy making groups, District Health Boards etc to do things from write health policy to advocate for local residents, to consult on urban design that has the potential to improve health. The career options are vast and right now you would be perfectly timed to catch the wave to public health employment for those with understanding of environment and public health, social inequity and health etc etc. It's gonna be huge as the world faces health epidemics such as obesity, diabetes and the effects of climate change on peoples health and the health system.

It's a social science degree - so lots of research and essay writing. Mixing your opinions with the weight of evidence. Great degree - thoroughly recommend it with exciting and growing career options!

well it depends what you want to get out of life. unfortunately, a BSc gets you nowhere. I know many BSc graduates who r just working fulltime at anywhere that will take them, a job they could get without the BSc!!!

I've just spent the last few hours reading the last 100 or so pages of this topic.

I hope no one takes this as being rude but I was just wondering how those entering through Grad entry are planning to pay for Med now that there are restrictions on the amount you can study?

Also, at Otago generally you can not enter HSFY if you have studied science papers previously at University. Is the same to be said for Auckland?

Also, why did people at Auckland choose Auckland over Otago?
And, what is the general format and content of the papers you must take in the first BioMed year?

Thanks

The new EFTS rules for student loans is interesting it really does impact any loans for medical school. If you do it in minimal time as a graduate (3 yr + 5 yr) you reach the cap of 7 EFTS before your last year. However I believe they may have exemptions?

i know in the old system BSc/MBChB student could get a 100 week extension on the student allowance limit of 200 weeks if they did the degrees one after another.

Just spoke with study link yesterday. The guy there said with an extension the EFTS system covers 10 years of FT study. He made the extension sound fairly easy to qualify for during the MBchB.

For info re Otago v's Auckland check out the current thread in the grad entry forum. There's some interesting stuff there. For me personally, it's family commitments + we LOVE Auckland + if I had to comment on course structure at a stretch, I quite like the traditional systems style of teaching - as opposed to CBL/PBL - not that I am convinced Otago offer in this in any kind of comprehensive format.

For OLY1 info - check out the current Auckland MBchB thread in the 'Studying Medicine' forum. There's a biomedder on there now posting timetables and asking for advice. I did the BHSc first year so could only comment on the 4 core papers common to both programmes - Chem, Bio, Medsci and Population Health.

Auckland OLY1 (BSc/BHSc) 2011 chat/enquiries

I'm starting this new thread for people to discuss any issues with OLY1 in both biomed and health sciences. This is just to ensure that the MBChB thread is less cluttered and reserved for talk about the MBChB itself

so post away with your questions :)
