Hi everyone :) I'll be starting Biomed from semester 1 this year!

oh and thank you lordgarlic for making this thread! I was searching for something like this :D .

I've finally finished sorting out my timetable (gosh SSO is annoying!), and am now just waiting for the classes to start.
I can't come up with any questions at the moment, but I'm just really really nervous imagining how hard everthing will be... arghhh!

Anyways, I hope I get to discuss the OLY1 stuff with people here :)

Thanks lordgarlic :)

Well i just have a q about both Biomed and Health Sciences.
I have done really well in Bioo and Chem in my HSC and same with english.
Now ppl have said that Health Sciences is more like essay writing and stuff is that true?
and is it harder compared to biomed ?

Thanks :)

I did biomed last year and didn't write a single essay...whereas my health science mates had a few essays on the go during semesters.

Health Science has fewer lectures compared to biomed, which means fewer hours at uni each week, but whether this means it is "easier" is debatable.

If you're really good at the sciences and enjoy them, do biomed. If you're not such a science fan and are better at writing essays etc then do health sci, that's my opinion anyway. Regardless, it's the four core papers that count, so as long as you do really well in those it doesn't matter too much how you go in the others.

Hope that helps =)

I take it you've looked at the papers for each and what they entail?

yepp i have looked at the course outlines for Biomed and Heath Sciences and Biomed sounds more interesting. Just a q do the courses for biomed have specific pdfs like the ones for Health Sciences??? For Pophlth 111 i have a pdf with everything on it from the books i need to use to the specific modues i'll be studying. Is there something like that for biomed ?

Thanks :)

Hmmm I would have thought there would have been one but I can't seem to find it, nor do I remember having one at the start of last year! Perhaps someone else knows where it is? Otherwise I can probably give you all that off the top of my head

Biomed just has the standard handbook for the course which is not available online at present I believe

Here is the link to the page containing the Faculty of Science handbooks. The biomed handbook doesn't actually contain course descriptions for any of the papers at stage 1, to find those you need to go into the subject-specific handbooks (Biological Sciences for BIOSCI 101/106/107, Chemistry for CHEM 110, etc.):

https://www.science.auckland.ac.nz/uoa/departmental-handbooks

The subject-specific handbooks list the prescribed and/or recommended textbooks for each paper.

Hi

Just some questions...
Do all first year Biomed/Health Science med hopefuls try really hard in getting good grades?
Do you need to have leadership experience and talk about this in the interview?
How many first year medicine places are there for 2011 at Auckland Uni?

Thanks!

1.Absolutely, only the serious ones though, which are about less than half of the whole cohort
2.Very helpful. Even if you were the captain of a sports team, thats leadership if you make it out to be
3.Current 2nd years would probably know better. My guess is around 230 or so

My count of our groups list has it at 212...but that could be missing a few people I'm not too sure

Thanks very much g.walker and 4everAlone!

Also, which of the following NCEA Level 3 subjects do you think would be useful for first year Health Science/Biomed at Auckland?

Maths with Stats
Maths with Calc
Physics
NZ History
English

Thanks!

Physics is useful if you're doing biomed. i never did it at school, but I hear its on level with NCEA level 3 physics, plus a few extra topics. The rest aren't really useful at all. Interesting to see you've haven't done bio. Any reason for that?

I'd say Physics for Biomed and English for Health science

1st yr textbooks:
Have you used any of these? Which ones should I buy
Thanks for the (future) advice!

For POPLHLTH:
WEBB ET AL: Essential Epidemiology (Rec/ HIghly Rec)
COGGON ET AL: Epidemiology for Uninitiated (Rec)
BONITA ET AL: Basic Epidemiology(Rec)

For BIOSCI107:
TORTORA & DERRICKSON: Principles of Anatomy & Physiology (Pres)
CAMPBELL & REECE: Biology 9th edition with Mastering Biology (Rec)

Hi thythekat,

I would say don't bother with the population health books - you definitely don't need ALL of them. I bought Essential Epidemiology last year but I didn't use it that often - you can just get it out the library/short loan if you absolutely need it.

I think Tortora is a really good one to have, I used it quite a bit. I also liked Campbell and Reece. I would say those two are the only ones you need to buy this year - and maybe the College physics one if you're doing physics and if you're not that great at it ( like me! ).

govpop: Thanks for the reply and I'm doing Bio this year. Those list of subjects aren't the ones I'm taking this year, just the ones I might take next year so I was wondering which would be useful to take. BTW is it okay to just do Level 2 Physics? Or is Level 3 Physics highly recommended for Biomed?

Thanks g.walker. Is there any long essay writing kind of thing you have to do in biomed?

Hmmm, I never did physics before and I managed to do pretty well. I guess the best advice is take Level 3 Physics if you actually enjoy physics. the physics paper isn't a core one, so you don't need to do really well in it.

And there is absolutely zilch essay writing in biomed. its one of the few degrees where you will never have an 'assignment' to complete.

well, pophlth111 has a couple of essays, but they're meant to be memorised then written down. Also, physics has an 'essay' question, but no language skills required
