Well done mate! Enjoy the rest of the holidays before next year, and do start mentally preparing yourself for freshers... ;)

By mental preparation you mean being desensitised to nudity and liver strength exercises? ;)

EDIT: I did spend all this year in a hall so I think I'm pretty prepared for all those things. ;P

Congrats guys!
Oh, and stick around, in terms of numbers on MSO, Otago is putting you lot to shame :p

Hey Guys,

I have posted this on the NZ Grad Offers page but I thought that I would post this on the OLY 1 page as well in case someone on the waitlist is only scanning the OLY 1 page :)

I was on the waitlist last year for Auckland. For me it sucked because I didn't have a clue what it was all about, but if I knew what the waitlist really was like, the wait would have been much easier. For the 2010 intake (the year before me) 20 people got waitlisted and 18 people got in and this was told to me by Tanya Savage when I was on the waitlist last year (that is 90% - which was way better than what I expected, as I thought the waitlist was a polite way of saying declined). In my year there were 25 people placed on the waitlist and I know at least 19 people got in (the reason that the waitlist number was increased to 25 was because Otago got an extra 30 places I think, Auckland medical school anticipated more places opening up, but this had less of an impact than expected) so this was approximately an 80% success rate.

The bottom line is that the medical school has not said no and they are still interested in you as an applicant. They also believe that you have a great chance of getting an offer eventually so this is all good news. Generally the University can predict how many places that become available due to the trends they have observed over the past few years. These offers are only made when a place is declined by a person who already has been offered one. This generally occurs around the 10th to the 20th of January which was the time the medical school gave applicants to accept their places (and last year a couple of extras came in afterwards). Unfortunately the bad news is that you wont find out anything until the 5th of January or so which is about the time the office re opens. However I hope it turns out well for you and please feel free to ask anything because I realise how hard it is being in limbo after my experiences last year

Very informative. Thank you!
I take it you applied as a graduate. Would the same apply for the undergrad waitlist?

I was actually an undergrad, and in some years they have had separate undergrad and grad waitlists, however last year Auckland Medical School 'filled' both their graduate and undergraduate quotas so they had a combined waitlist. By undergrad and grad quotas I mean that they like to have a minimum number of both graduate and undergraduate students (1/3 grads and 2/3 undergrads) so if these are achieved the waitlist is combined, and this was what the Medical School confirmed last year.

This combined waitlist meant that as soon as a person who had an offer turned their place down, the next person was offered a place and it did not matter whether they were a graduate or undergraduate student. Therefore no matter if it was a grad or undergrad, the next person on the waitlist would then be offered a place.

However this may not be the case this year it all depends on whether or not the class has the minimum number of both graduates and undergraduates the medical school likes in its class. Hope that makes sense.

Thats sweet :)

I'm sorry that I don't know that much about the Otago waitlist, but Auckland seems to know approximately how many get in each year. For sure this can vary, however I get the impression that they can predict this reasonably accurately (as over the past two years this has varied between approximately 80 to 90%). I reckon that this would be similar to Otago as well, as they would have a good idea of how many places would open up, but then again I am not familiar with the Otago system sorry

Best I can do is:
https://www.fmhs.auckland.ac.nz/soph/undergrad/_docs/CourseOutlines/POPLHLTH111.pdf (poplhlth 111)
https://www.fmhs.auckland.ac.nz/faculty/teaching/medsci142/_docs/142-course-outline.pdf (medsci 142)
Stage 1 courses*- The University of Auckland (biosci 101 + 106 + 107)
Year 1 courses*- The University of Auckland (physics 160)
Courses – Faculty of Science – Chemistry (chem 110)

The above are the courses for biomed with one extra general ed paper. And I assume you know that the 'core papers' are 110, 107, 142, and 111.

Hi!

I was waitlisted for the 2012 intake (just found out yesterday)

How do you find out your rank on the waitlist?

Thanks!

Hey Busegg, from my experience last year I didn't find anything out until the 5th of January which was when the office reopened. I know that this is a very anxious time as it was last year for me. I also found it was very frustrating that there was no one in the office until after the new year. But when the office reopened I rang up Tanya Savage and she told me what my position was on the waitlist and how many had been cleared etc. From my experience last year I found Tanya was very helpful and open about where I was on the waitlist and what it was about.

Just remember over the past two years there has been 18 places that opened up in 2010 intake and 19 places (at least) that opened up in the 2011 intake which was my year. Although the offers are made as soon as they come out, the majority of the offers come out between the 10th to the 20th January so I wouldn't expect anything til then unfortunately unless you are at the front end of the list. I know it sucks being in limbo as I was last year :( But I hope that it all turns out well for you as more than likely it will :) so that is good news. Hope that helps
