haha yeah same here, somehow his name dissapeard from my mind, all i remember is that he use to do the medicine interviews a few years back.
Eventhough i already have my plan b,c,d,e,f and g, i would like to hope it is not true, just so I dont have to stress about it haha. Though it really did feel that the lecture was more to sell biomedical sciences as opposed to medicine. Looks the rumours were true though, 230 places now instead of 191 last time I checked, that statistic was written on the slide haha, not just said aloud, so hopefully it has some truth too it!

Yup thats definitely the one!

Yeah definitely more places. The year before mine had 191, my year has 213, this latest intake has 230ish, and next year has more again I think. To be honest I didn't think Chamley had much to do with the admissions office (?) but Monday night I'll have an update on here for everyone

Ohh awesome! and thanks heaps!!

I was there at the grafton lecture today/yesterday aswell and it would not be surprised if the speaker just mispoke and got the 4 core papers and 8 papers thing the wrong way round.
I am of the understanding that it has been B+ average across 8 papers to be eligible for an interview (though not guaranteed an interview) and then the 4 core papers contribute directly to whether you are accepted into the medicine program. I agree with Sophi, the way the speaker said it was kind of offhand and matter-of-factly, like 'this is how it has been for quite a few years, this is just how everything works'.

Surely if the DID change the admissions process there would have been an announcement or at least greater awareness raising or something?

Same here, i think that he just got it mixed up with the two. It doesn't make the admission criteria fair at all
And also i think that he spoke of medicine in a condescending (not really) tone and was just selling biomedical science to audience.
Once we start lectures, there will be some lecture which will bring this topic up again for confirmation wont there?

I'd trust what the website says. The admissions process is changing, but not this year.

Also, the 2012 cohort has just over 240 students (including repeating students),
the 2013 cohort will have an additional 28 places => ~268
the 2014 cohort will have a further additional 28 places => ~296

afaik there are no more number increases after 2014.

Yea so the guy yesterday showed us the numbers for entering med
300 applied
195 interviewed
132 accepted

These numbers were for just oly1
How many of those accepted are from biomed/ health sci

Those numbers actually look like quite good odds to me... That means that almost half of the people who apply get a spot (The Otago admissions office told me that 'around 600' people apply for dentistry from HSFY, so I'd imagine we'd have ~800 HSFY applicants for the ~180 HSFY seats in med). Or is there more of a 'I don't have the grades to get in, I won't apply' culture in Auckland?

Froot, though the numbers seem low, they are appropriate. That is because the numbers released by the faculty are those of eligible applicants, not the total number of applications received.

Oh right, that makes much more sense, thanks :)

Cheers, no worries.

To place some of these figures in perspective.
In 2009, there were just over 1200 applicants to Auckland Medicine (as explained to me by an admissions staff), out of which, about 600 had applied through OLY1 (including MAPAS and ROMPE). Though, quoted amounts by the school were much less.

@all of the OLY1 students at the Grafton lecture on Friday -

This is a bit off the subject, but did anyone catch the number of Biomed students there are this year from Chamley's talk? I thought I heard 612 people but just want to confirm, out of curiosity's sake ^_^

By the way, I do agree with most people's line of thought that Chamley was just being a little condescending about medicine and trying to promote more interest in the purely Biomedical Science pathway. I also had a huge surprise when he talked about the GPA of the overall papers being looked at more seriously this year (!).

However, 4everAlone is going to clarify on Monday, which is great (yy)

Besides, the lecturers on Monday may help soothe or worry us as to how we must approach our studies! -_-

Best option is to phone or e-mail Larry (he won't mind, though, don't be put off by his booming voice):

Except I don't think he's the best person to contact about this...it's an admissions question so I'd rather ask the admissions department...
Larry knows a few things about admissions.
But if you want to talk to a member of the admissions team, Tanya is your best bet.
Her e-mail is: [email protected] sorry, I don't know her number.

[OFFTOPIC]But if you want to talk to the admissions director, John Monigatti, his e-mail is:
[email protected] However I don't recommend that you do.

Cheers. Yupyup I got it sussed. It's easier for me to just go and talk to them directly seeing as I'll be there tomorrow...

Whoo! First day of lectures over and out of the way ^_^ Mostly introductory things though...cannot wait until tomorrow when we finally start the year-long learning process! How did you guys find the day, OLY1 fellows?

For the first day, I still remember Professor Rod Jackson 's rap haha. So funny :D
Today...ehhhh.. CHEM 110 seems fine, but BIOSCI 101 and 107 make me nervous now as I didnt do biology in high school :(
How do you guys think? Most of you must find it alright I guess.(y)

Spend a lot of time learning up BIOSCI 107 that is by far probably the hardest paper in the first semester especially for the first half anyway.
