especially when clive evans just suddenly raced through the last half of the frog egg gastrulating and even went through the formation of nervous system

@Nogeat - Yeah, I completely agree with you. I suppose this is a good thing since we have to fight the crowd to get a seat!

@leiladian - Don't worry about not having done biology. You just have to put in the extra mile, but it will be worth it. (y) If you don't think the lecture slides and your notes are sufficient, check out the further readings in Campbell Bio, etc. That goes into a lot more detail, and it's pretty straightforward.

@narwhalbacon - Dr. Evans + BIOSCI 107 = quite intense, haha. But extremely interesting!

Man that security guard is pretty annoying, i was at the front of the crowd but he pushed me all the way back behind a crowd of 500(n)

[OFFTOPIC]I was late today so went to OGGB3. However, I saw that he had even set out a barricade of sorts for people to wait behind. The woes of being a security guard are plentiful. -_- [/OFFTOPIC]

the security guard does a fantastic job, entering/leaving the room is a nightmare when he's not there (he stops coming after a few weeks)

don't worry re:biosci 107, Clive Evans is intense. Do make sure you know everything in the course guide (especially the frog stuff - he loves to examine this in the test). I found the first half of 107 alot harder than the second.

(yy) Thanks @Hopefully.

Oh, Professor Clive Evans didnt really finish all the contents of Lec 1 in the course guide today (the body systems).
So that means we need to look up the contents from the A&P ourselves and memorize?

qbob - Did you find that as the semester progresses that the number of people who go to lectures dwindles? Or does it stay relatively constant? Thanks for the tips as well! (y)

leiladian - You're welcome! I will find myself in the exact same situation when Semester 2 rolls along, and the PHYSICS 160 paper will leave me clueless...having done no physics since Year 10 Science...

With lecture sizes, currently, 098 should be completely full in addition to the allocated overflow rooms. The numbers are expected to be decline, but not to the extent which you're expecting. Majority of the students stay put, especially with courses like BIOSCI107 and CHEM110 which overlap with several degrees (Engineering included).

Oh yeah, thanks for clarifying that! (yy)

Did anyone manage to confirm what the admissions process was this year? in particular the whole 4 core papers or 8 papers taken into account when seeing if you make the cut into medicine?

I heard the physics in sem 2 is not that hard, even if you havent done phy for a long time. The real bomb is medsci I guess. But anyway, no worries for sem 2 now

Yea, i emailed FMHS and they said the admission criteria hasn't changed so the guy at orientation got it muddled up or something

Hi guys, just wondering what peoples thoughts are on avance tutors, has anyone been to their seminars so far, or signed up for tutoring? Is either worthwhile?
Thanks

Although i haven't been to their seminars by reading through the past year threads, I've never seen anyone recommend avance tutors. Rather people would be against this saying that the money isn't worth it.

I can second this after talking to them. False alarm ;)

Wouldn't waste any money with these guys. In my opinion they prey on gullible first years and probably make a fortune from it. Not worth your time or money. If you study better in a group, then start your own study group with friends and teach each other stuff, don't spend money on having failed med students teach it for you :)

Everyone is entitled to their opinions but firstly I just wanted to clarify that Avancetutors doesn't have failed would be med students teaching the courses.

I know there would be some out there that have failed med students teaching the courses for other tutoring companies which I agree you should not be going to.

From what I know Avancetutors' tutors are mostly graduates either studying a Masters or a PhD degree or finished it who have done 1st year papers in the particular subjects.

Some of my friends went there last year and I received mixed feedback about it. Some had said that the tutoring was great while others said it wasn't. So it's up to you to decide. Some people work better when someone else teaches you the stuff in a new way while others work better on their own. Depending on what suits you best I suggest you choose what you think is best for you.
