Arrgh I had a freak out too. I only got a 10/15.5 and my friend in my stream also got less than the class average. I had my 107 lab on Monday :( My other friend in the other lab got full marks!

@Nogeat - Maybe the tutor you had was extremely strict/pendantic about their marking? To be honest, my opinion is that this seems rather unfair for some, and we may or may not have done similar/same things on our assignment sheets!

@Zippo - Yeah, you hear things like that. One of my other friends got full marks as well! (But they weren't in the same lab stream or day as me, so that's a different situation altogether...) My lab was on Monday (morning) as well; however, we got shunted to the Level 2 East Laboratory because of unprecendented numbers, etc, etc ...

Should be the same for BIOSCI 101 as well right?! However, the BIOSCI 106 one did count from memory.

Looking back to 2011 on cecil, the microscopy lab had 0.00 weighting (but it was out of 14.5, not 15.5), so if this year's the same, it won't count at all. But def check with the biology centre or your lab coordinator at the old bio building.

That might be it, though mine was thursday 2-5pm in the west lab, so maybe thursday was a bad day, havent spoken to anyone from my lab stream yet to see what they got though. But yeah thats definitely odd about your lab stream.

same lab stream as mine! Thursday 2-5pm west lab!
And I got 8.5... I was totally freaking out when I saw it after I heard one of my friends got full mark!!

Just to let those who are still fretting know, my mark for biosci 107 lab went up from 9 so i think there was just a mistake in the processing or they hadnt finished marking, so I imagine lots of the other 8.5/9/9.5s will go up as the class average is now 14.66 . What a relief!! Eventhough we established it wasn't worth much in the end

Aaaargh I just re-checked mine and its been bumped up = Success :) I will stop fretting now. Yes, I worry even if it's not weighted, but only because I shouldn't be doing badly in an intro lab....YAAAY

Hey guys.

Yea I remember we were pulling our hair out over this. In Chem110 I had a tutor who just doesn't give very high marks (usually a 3 or 4 out of 6, with 1 being the best score). Other groups had nice tutors and gots 1s and 2s so I think I got below average as well.

Yes, the labs and exams are very competitive. You will find that the average is pretty high in labs. Not everyone has done their labs, so the average may fluctuate until everyone has done that lab session. I think best thing would be to have a look at why you got points taken off. I remember having one of the tutors who didn't like me at all and would try to mark me down, despite the fact that the answers were correct when compared with other people (WTF?), so I got below average in that lab. I had to make up for it with exam marks in order to get A+.

I remember in MEDSCI142, where you have those MCQ tests at the end of each lab, some students who didn't get 10/10, went up to complain about it. Good thing was, the tutors realised it was their mistake, and remarked everyone. Moral of the story, tutors can make mistakes, but you gotta be pretty confident they did make a mistake.

Good luck

Thanks for your insight, Gigaoblivion! ^_^

Thing is, if we are actually VERY confident (once we get our assignment sheets back) that we were unfairly marked by the tutor, or that our answers, once compared with others, are actually the right ones, then how should we approach this? Would you say that I would be treading on thin ice to confront the tutor about it? (And find myself in 'sticky' situations in later labs?) -_-

It's a bit of a dilemma that I'm tossing my thoughts around, but I have to be cautious as to my methods of tackling it... >_<

I would appreciate if anyone else has any suggestions as well!

@hopefully, I emailed Mel (our coordinator) about my low mark (before it went up) and she said:

Your lab assignment will be given back to you at your next lab, and the tutor will review with the class what s/he was looking for and where the marks were allocated. Please use this opportunity to ask where you might improve. If, after that time, you are still unsure, please bring your assignment sheet in to me.

Thanks,
Mel

So if you think that asking your tutor could affect their treatment of you (which could very well be true) then you should go see Mel personally.

Thanks a lot, Nogeat! (yy)
That's exactly what I wanted to know haha. I will wait until Monday morning when I have my next lab, and see what 'cues' are given by the tutor before making a decision as to what to do from there onwards. But you've given me a great alternative

Hey guys just wanted to clarify something, for entrance into OLY1 Med in 2013, I would have to get at least B+ average in my NON-CORE papers and to be on the safe side around 8.5 GPA for my 4 x CORE papers? So there isnt really much point studying for Biosci 101 as long as i get B+?

Correct. Don't even need a B+ in 101 though as long as your overall GPA is above 6 (overall B+ average is needed not at least a B+ in each individual paper if that makes sense)

How is everybody studying for pophlth 111?

Well asides from my usual study at the very moment ive just been going through the gate notes, havent sussed out a plan of attack yet, but will in the next day. Also started using peerwise, its surprisingly addictive but hopefully that will be of help. Ive heard that the first test usually has an exceptionally low class average  any advice from people on good ways to study for test one? I heard its largely mcq
Thanks

Peerwise is good for practising, and make sure you read the slides and tutorial handouts as well as GATE notes for the test. Test one should be all MCQ unless they've changed it (unlikely). Textbook isn't helpful for the first test.

If you're aiming for a high 90%+ mark, I'd recommend paying attention to detail when going through the slides. For example, the N/D bias question that turned up last year... I had that jotted down, but skipped over it during revision, and so lost another mark :/

For the first test I would recommend studying the following: Gate notes, Rod Jackson's gate notes and.... the gate notes

I second this. PAY IMMENSE ATTENTION to little details as well. In my opinion, the reason why many people don't do as well in the first test is because we overlook minute details from the notes and slides.

Make sure you understand definitions really well from the Gate notes, Rod Jackson likes to ask questions in a way that sometimes makes it seem very ambiguous. And if he says case control studies aren't going to be assessed I think he would have highlighted in purple to show this is not relevant for the POPLHLTH 111 course. You don't need to learn it!!! I learnt it anyway but it never came out and you could spend more time learning the more relevant stuff.

Furthermore, the textbook isn't totally aligned with what is said in the lectures as many of you may have found out now hence it isn't that helpful.

I think the reason why many people do well in the 2nd test compared to the first is because people realise that the questions which the lecturers will ask are orientated towards a more knowledge and recall nature. Hence so many people got over 35 out of 40 and 7 people got 40 out of 40 last year from what I can remember. Definitely much better than the 20/30 average from the 1st test.

Just tried the practise pophlth test, and as expected it is pretty easy and straightforward.
Only if the real one was like this <_<
