Numbers in HSFY vary from year to year though since there's no restriction on class numbers.
In regards to a comment on the other page, yes, it is frustrating because there's no set cut off (well they don't release one!). You're simply competing against others applying for medicine and hope you're within that block of people. It can seem intimidating when you're sitting next to some guy who's complaining he "only" got 98% in Chemistry (one of the subjects used to cut out a fair few students I think because of the 70% mark you need minimum in each paper to be allowed to apply) but remember it's average of all the marks! So you just need to do your best. Yes, exactly what your mum told you
UMAT seems to be less competitive that in Australia when it comes to selection. The percentiles also give a much more accurate perception of how well you'll go too, than in Australia. I remember people asking whether I got over 50 or notAnything over 70ish seems "good." But then HSFY seems full of these sort of myths so myeh!
Did you ever sit in one of the first few rows merd? (I did because I'm deaf!) Okay there was a lot of us but I'm so curious at who sitting around me in all those lectures got into medOkay, gossipy curiousity but still! I used to sit there deciding who would get in based on who asked lots of questions off the lecturers, actually had prepared notes before class and those who looked comfortable and confident
I'm so sad! I'm also sad I didn't take up my place in Otago rather than going back to Australia
I miss Dunedin! And this course at UNSW is - interesting. Much different to how I had interpreted it!

Well at least UNSW isn't FREEZING COLD like dunedin is !
So I guess Otago goes with percentiles, not raw scores?
And also, you're right, chemistry is the reason why so many people drop out/fail to meet the standards. (and wow @ 98%)
By the way what kind topics of chemistry do they teach in HSFY? Acid-base equilibria, reaction kinetics, organic chemistry I presume? They're also the hardest topics for me at school >_<
Cheers for all the advice guys ! you rock
