Numbers in HSFY vary from year to year though since there's no restriction on class numbers.

In regards to a comment on the other page, yes, it is frustrating because there's no set cut off (well they don't release one!). You're simply competing against others applying for medicine and hope you're within that block of people. It can seem intimidating when you're sitting next to some guy who's complaining he "only" got 98% in Chemistry (one of the subjects used to cut out a fair few students I think because of the 70% mark you need minimum in each paper to be allowed to apply) but remember it's average of all the marks! So you just need to do your best. Yes, exactly what your mum told you :P

UMAT seems to be less competitive that in Australia when it comes to selection. The percentiles also give a much more accurate perception of how well you'll go too, than in Australia. I remember people asking whether I got over 50 or not O_o Anything over 70ish seems "good." But then HSFY seems full of these sort of myths so myeh!

Did you ever sit in one of the first few rows merd? (I did because I'm deaf!) Okay there was a lot of us but I'm so curious at who sitting around me in all those lectures got into med :P Okay, gossipy curiousity but still! I used to sit there deciding who would get in based on who asked lots of questions off the lecturers, actually had prepared notes before class and those who looked comfortable and confident :D I'm so sad! I'm also sad I didn't take up my place in Otago rather than going back to Australia :( I miss Dunedin! And this course at UNSW is - interesting. Much different to how I had interpreted it!

Well at least UNSW isn't FREEZING COLD like dunedin is !

So I guess Otago goes with percentiles, not raw scores?

And also, you're right, chemistry is the reason why so many people drop out/fail to meet the standards. (and wow @ 98%)
By the way what kind topics of chemistry do they teach in HSFY? Acid-base equilibria, reaction kinetics, organic chemistry I presume? They're also the hardest topics for me at school >_<

Cheers for all the advice guys ! you rock

searching on the OTAGO website would be the best place to find course information.

If its anything like year 1 chemistry up here its all organic, acid/base and kinetics

I came from cambridge exams so I'm not TOO familiar with NCEA. But what the university does is rank your top 80 NCEA level 3 credits. (so assuming you have 10 excellences are 3 credits each you get 30 "excellence" type points).

My advice to you would be to contact the science student centre ([email protected]) or find the phone number on the science faculty webpage and ask them directly.

Off the top of my head they admit ~400 students into BSc (biomed)

UMAT score wise, it is worth 15% of your final ranking and most students have UMAT scores around the ~170/180 region

That'd be the score as LG said. As to how much each section is worth, there are 44 qs in Section 1, 36 in S2, and 30 in S3. How Acer gets your scores from the mark out of 44/36/30 only they know. Download the booklet from their site.

Are they percentiles LG? Because they're quite low tbh

the stats I provided for auckland were raw score

Are you sure this sort of information isn't available on the university's website?

it won't be because NCEA is such a rubbish system lol

They aren't as high as people think. I had a friend who failed a few papers and still got in. You shouldn't be too worried about this really.

Sorry do you mind me asking which school you're from?

Heidi it's because failed papers/assessment standards are not currently recorded in the record of learning I believe

They're recording them now. If you fail it comes up. I think it was because everyone just ended up doing one paper per subject (lol isn't ncea awesome).

it was because once people got the 80 credits required for NCEA 1/2/3 they didn't attend the externally assessed achievement standards lol

HSFY off the top of my head is open entry, that means you need to achieve the minimum university entrance standard which is at 74 TER/ENTER/UAI (or was it 76 I can't remember), best to whiz and email to otago admissions

so.... for otago...... how do u apply???????????????????????? and can u go straight into ,med? if u're an ausssssssssie
