Bacilli, sorry, I know this is ironic, but I had to edit the last part of what you said. If you have an issue with the rules feel free to PM Ru about them but for now being a part of MSO means abiding by that rule. You're not the one who has to pay the consequences for whatever you say on here, Ru is, so I think he has the right to make whatever decision he likes on that front.

Re: BOS yes it's huge and if anyone tried to sue them I'm sure they'd have plenty of financial and legal resources to defend themselves. Therefore they're willing to take risks in allowing almost anything on their site. MSO is different and that's OK. I think our relationship with them works in a lot of ways.[/offtopic]

Please note: posts about MSO's style of writing have been moved to another thread in general discussion.

Lol...I only just noticed this thread...how ignorant of me.

If anyone has any questions about Otago Med School, I'd be happy to answer.

Most important thing to know: HSFY has now changed for the first time in 2007 (the grade below me)...and things are a lot different in terms of competition, workload and the actual style of teaching during medicine.

Medicine, up till my grade, was highly reputed for getting the balance right between basic medical sciences and clinical exposure...however, after this year, med school is going to become much much more clinical (like Australian med schools)...and there is some debate (especially from the doctor's perspective), whether this is a move for the worse as for better...

Thank god I'm stuck with the good ole' system!

yeah i noticed HSFY in 2007 changed dramatically in terms of courses. I will be interesting to see how your medical programme develops though

Hey, do you know roughly what kind of UMAT results you need to get into med?

And I hear Otago only considers your raw score/s?

And I'd be REALLY interested in anything else you can tell me about HSFY (i.e about the papers involved etc), as I will most likely be down there next year.

It's a lot harder these days because HSFY has a massive make over in 2007 I believe. All the HSFY courses were modified. I've also heard rumours of interviews at otago? can someone verify that for me?

I doubt they are going to put in place an interview procedure.

The Otago admissions lady that came to my school said there might be an increase in intake next year but didn't mention anything about an interview.

as far as I'm aware there are 40 new medical school places being split between Auckland (20 each) for the 2008 class. Most medical schools have been over-enrolling a bit though, so most of those next 08 places will be used to sort out the overflowing classes at the moment as far as i'm aware

Apparently nearly all medical schools over-enrol because they expect a significant attrition rate, particularly over first year.

Hullo guys, I'm new to these forums and I just have a few questions regarding biomed/Hsc at Otago and Auckland

currently I am doing Cie and for those of you who did cie in 7th form, did you find first year uni to be similar to A2?

And also I hear about people getting A- averages and what not but what are the ways they examine you in Auck/Otago? Is it mostly written papers like in high school or does it involve labs, assignments etc?

I'm really confused on what to do  I really want to do Med but I heard it is very competitive and I feel so not confident.

cheers :D

Regarding interviews at Otago, there are ALWAYS rumours of interviews coming in the next year...but it has never happened...

I havn't heard of interviews for 2009 entry into medicine (obviously, there definitely aren't interviews for 2008 entry)...but then again, I havn't kept up with the latest news...

Comparing auckland and otago is like comparing apples and oranges these days. I know after the revamp of HSFY the courses are no longer as closer alinged. There is a stronger emphasis on human anatomy/physiology in HSFY from what I've been told (compared to OLY1 in Auckland).

The majority of the stuff covered in the A2 syllabus is similar to the stuff that is covered in OLY1 science papers.

In Biosci 101/106/107 papers A2 makes up a fairly big chunk of the content. The majority being the biochemistry portions with krebs cycle, calvin's cycle etc etc.

Chem 110 is essentially A2 level chemistry with one or two additions. I'm aware in 2007 CIE scrapped the options syllabus for A2 and I don't know how much spectroscopy is taught in the A2 syllabus anymore, but pre 2007, the spectro option covered all spectro taught in chem 110.

Assessment wise, science papers in first year are done with 80% tests+exams and 20% labs. Population health paper is 100% in test/examination setting.

Rather than me bore you with more details, there is information about OLY1/HSFY as a sticky in this thread. If you need more details best to private message me if you want to know about Auckland OLY1. I MIGHT be able to answer some HSFY questions but messaging someone like kiwilander about it is better (I don't know how often he/she is on though)

Auckland

Hey guys! I'm a little lost on this forum so I don't know if there is already an Auckland Uni thread (I can't seem to find one)... I have been on PD because I have also applied to Flinders. I was just wondering if anyone has heard anything from Auckland yet?

Mods- redirect me if I am in the wrong place :)

Not much out on Auckland at the moment. Based on the trends from last year interview letters will be out sometime in the last week of november.

The interview period is 10th -19th of December with offers being released on nDeva on 20th december.

Thats as much information I have in regards of timing. Other than that all I can tell you is that the interview sessions are 9-12 in the morning or 1-5 in the afternoon. I believe students are set in 30 minute slots or something. I don't have much more information. Though I will be at the interviews helping out during the day to answer questions and what not haha

are the actual med offers released on dec 20th?? I was thinking they weren't released until early Feb which had me worried thinking that by then I would already be at Flinders. Thankyou for your help.

Oh another thing? Is the interview a panel interview asking general questions much the same as for the grad entry interviews? I don't know if you will know this but thought it was worth asking :)
