Omg wtf noooooooooooooo I won't be home to celebrate my 18th T_T Grrrr damn you Otago for having the mid semester break earlier for med.

And everyone would be known by a number haha. I'm so looking forward to understanding all the medical-speak in the TV shows, and knowing when what theyre saying is completely wrong, or rubbish.

Lordgarlic, should I keep any of my text books from this year? Will any be useful?

offload and sell them asap haha :P target to sell at o-week for first years preferably

Wow, I found treasure! Reading this is like riding a rollercoaster! Keeping up till now like what…5am!
I really can’t decide between Auckland and Otago. Mainly because of the interview issue and the general ed issue. Can anyone recommend any good General ed paper for me to take next for Biomed?

in terms of gen ed, the following are apparently good options
phil105G - no exams
ECON151G - easiest paper ever

Thanx lordgarlic.
I heard that for phil105 there is an assignment that is worth 40% of the total grading. Do you know what the assignment is about? Also is it hard to get good marks?
As for econ151G, i have never done economics in high school. Do you think that will be a problem? (like getting a high grade?)

Now i wish i hadn't taken maths and instead doing things like economics or psychology in high school.

Seeing as only the 4 common papers count for med, then wouldn't you pick something that would take up the least time so you could concentrate on the other papers?

you still want to do something you enjoy. Nothing worse than paying $500 for a paper only to hate it

as for the difficulty of ECON151G, most people I know have never done economics in their lives and manage to scrape at least an A- in that paper

I have a lot of friends who had done philosophy and all of them got A+. So i guess it is easy to get good marks

I have never taken economics in high school either, but I did econ151G and found it very easy. I remember that we just crammed the whole course on the night before the exam and all my friends and I got A+. They teach you as if you have never ever done economics before. But I heard that you needed 92% to get A+ cus it is such an easy paper and so many people get A+ in it, your going to have to check with the lecturer on this one.

I did phil105G it was pretty good and its not too hard to get a decent grade. The assignment is easy basically the entire course is about making and reading arguments and breaking them down and seeing if they are valid/false. i did it in 1 night (its due right in the middle of exam period) and ended up with a A-, so if u put a little more effort in you can get a good grade.

Hope thats useful. Btw the lecturer is really good. hes also blind.

I would suggest you just do a general ed that you enjoy. It doesnt really count for anything, except that the average of all your courses must be at least B+, to be considered for interview.

I did politics 107 this year, which was pretty interesting. We had John Key, and Helen Clark speak to us amongst others. For the exam they tell you the topics there will be questions on, so of the whole course, I ended up only learning 4 or 5 lectures in total.

A reason not to do economics, is that it has lectures on Wednesday. There aren't any biomed lectures on Wednesday, so if you can choose a gen ed, without lectures on Wednesday, you can have it off, to get even more study done!

Thank you so much guys. Yeah i think LG is right. I should do something i would enjoy. Both economics and philosophy sound interesting and easy so i think i will choose between those two.
By the way, is the philosophy assignment similar to the internals for NCEA?
And what exactly is in the Econ course? Is it similar to what they do in NCEA level 3?
I can't seem to find more than a brief overview on these courses.
And does anyone know when is the deadline to accept an offer for Auckland uni?

What are the required textbooks for Biomed? Do we have to have all the books listed for recommended reading?

No you don't need all the text books. The chemistry, and biochemistry ones I hardly used at all during the year, so I wouldn't bother with those. The most useful ones, and most used ones would be Tortora, Biology, College Physics, and I would suggest you get those. Essential epidemiology is also useful at times too. You can search for the required text books for each course at www.ubsbooks.co.nz

chemistry: useless
biology: useless, just get from short loan when needed
tortara and derrickson for 107/142: actually useful since they examine stuff in pre-readings now haha
physics: utterly rubbish unless you have never done physics before
epidemiology: photocopy relevant sections
