If I make a rough guess usually between 30 to 40 +/- 20 out of 900 remaining OLY1. However, nobody actually knows. Just worry about doing your best mate.

Does anyone know what proportion of OLY1 kids are likely to have A+ for all 3 cores so far?

Hope UMAT went well for everyone! Hope you guys managed to finished, I ran well short of time when I did it last year :/

Hey guys, I just signed up to mso! Mainly just writing this to see how to post on this thread.
I'm kind of concerned about my core GPA though. What kind of interview score would one need with a core gpa of 8.75?

Thanks! :D

If you're on track to getting a 8.75 core, well done! That's a really good GPA, keeping in mind how it's harder to do well in 107 due to changes in grading. I can't give you a definite answer because acceptable scores would be affected by the cohort size, your UMAT etc but I had a 8.75 core with a 56% percentile UMAT and I got waitlisted till January. But instead of worrying too much about the interview, just brainstorm every now and then what you might put in your MH03 :D

haha thanks, but I just can't help but feel 8.75 may let me down. Ah i see, in your year, what do u think an acceptable interview score was for ur 8.75 GPA? My umat is alright, but seeing as that's hardly weighted, I don't see that I'd get much of a benefit from it.
Did u know that u got waitlisted? Did they tell you when others got their acceptance letters, or did u find out later in Jan that u had been waitlisted and chosen?
And yeah that's a good idea! Better start brainstorming that :D
Thanks for the advice, much appreciated :)

I personally think that although its stated that the GPA counts for 60% towards acceptance, its mainly to buy yourself the interview. Once you get the interview, its not a question of how well you can do, is a question of how much you want to do it, and thats what the interviewers are looking for. As for UMAT, i think its just a formality...... with all that said, its only my personal opinion. But honestly, 8.75 is more than sufficient to comfortable in terms of interview selection ^_^

Personally I think the UMAT is a way of cutting down the numbers of applicants, GPA is for adequate academics and the interview (according to my Profs) is to weed out the obvious sociopaths and an attempt to find out how easy it would be to teach you medicine.

I'm new here as well, and the max core GPA I can get is 8.5... From what I've heard this would get me an interview (again not really sure!! :/ ) but even if I do well in the interview, do you guys think that I'd be able to move up the ranking enough to get in? Sorry if this is a annoyingly stupid question! :)

There should be a table with core GPAs and interviews scores required for people like us asking these annoying questions haha

You'll have to pester some of the Auckland med students on here to get onto it. Otago already has such a table, because we have more MSO-addicted meddies (And are generally superior :p )

To be honest, ill be surprised if more than 250 students (approximate med places) out of the cohort applying this year get a GPA higher than 8.5, and I heard that interviewers are not aware of your GPA, correct me if this is not the case though. Regardless, only thing you can do now is to do your best this semester (yy)

Are u talking about a Umat GPA table in otago? What GPA do u reckon a person with 90 percentile (or around that) would need?
haha "more superior", your're dreaming :P

Getting an 8.75 core paper GPA gives you a really good chance of getting in! I don't know very many people in my cohort who had a 9.0 GPA, in fact most of my friends (and me) had an 8.75 GPA. So don't worry too much about it.

Obviously, getting a good UMAT and interview score would help you out heaps but I personally think the grades are the most important thing. The interview is (in my opinion) only there to pick out the people who are extraordinary or seriously lacking social skills. As for the UMAT, I know that some people got in with 40%ile UMAT scores (although I don't know what their core GPA was) so all is not lost if your UMAT score isn't too flash.

I don't want to make it sound like you're definitely in with an 8.75 GPA, but my personal opinion is that grades matter the most, so try and do the best you can there - there isn't really much you can do about your UMAT/interview score anyway.

Good luck!

People with core GPA of 8.75 getting worried...Sigh.
I know people with core GPA 8.0 who got in, so I take interview is a massive deciding factor into the selection. All I can do is pray...

Worshipppp believe it or not there is one person according to my medical school friends in 2nd year at Auckland now who said that there is a guy in their year with a core GPA of 7.25 which must mean he must have got 10 in the interview. He was a standard entry OLY 1 candidate not MAPAS or RRAS or Graduate or International.

I can confirm that because I personally know the person who you are talking about, and yes he did get a 7.25 core GPA. He got a low core due to extracurricular activities that weighed him down around first semester exam time. So before you freak out anymore about your GPA, just sit back and think about how much better the situation you are in is compared to my friend who must have been a nervous wreak come interview time. (Written by a first year tired of people complaining about their ridiculously high GPAs).

Well the guy with the 7.25 is a pure legend! Credit to him :)
. All im asking is what interview score (approx) I'd need to have a good chance at getting in. So im not really complaining im more worried (which is fair enough, grades don't get you in) as having a perfect GPA gives u the best possible chance and i can't give myself that chance.
Its probs annoying for you though so sorry for that lol
