Oh yeah..since i just joined MSO i cant send a PM...i'll get my post number higher to do so and send you a PM:lol:

No worries! :p

hi guys, im in auckland OLY too. any idea what would be considered a safe gpa (core) for auckland? ive got 3/3 a+'s in my cores so far, and an 86%ile in umat last yr. would it be best to go all out on medsci 142 this semester even if it comes at the cost of my other 3 papers?

Hey hca12!! :D Welcome to MSO!

So far as I know from reading the OLY1 archive, you are in a very strong position at the moment with 3 A+s for the cores. Congrats on that! (yy)
I'm sure some of the other med students can answer with more knowledge though, like 4everAlone, @italianopaolo. (Ahh, who else?)

As far as UMAT is concerned, have a look at these entry requirements :) If you scroll to the very bottom, it tells you that the average raw score is taken into account, not the overall percentile.

Just wondering, are you planning to take UMAT again? It seems like you've already got a great score :p

Ok, so back to your other question. It seems that even if you don't get an A+ for MEDSCI 142, instead maybe an A or A- (hypothetically), your core GPA should be sweet for getting you an interview! :D

Oh, and are you interested in a possible meet up next week before semester 2 starts?

ok thanks a lot for your help :) nah i decided against retaking umat this yr, i didn't really want it to interfere with the second semester of uni and there's always the chance it might decrease :/ yeah a meet up would be great, would be good to get to know some other people in biomed :) when are you guys thinking of meeting up? also hope all your guys marks have been ok :)

OMG! 3/3 A+ is a real strong position to be in...i only got 1 A+, rest A-....so your position is too good!(yy) And from what I remember from orientation week, the admission's lady said that though raw scores are counted, a UMAT percentile of 80 and above should be very good and that a good interview will then solidify your spot in Med next year! So you should be all set like a boss!(y)

Nobody can tell you to focus on one paper over three others but remember this, only your core papers (MEDSCI, CHEM, BIO, POPHLTH) are taken into account for interview selection and selection in to med but that you need to achieve a B+ overall GPA

And as for MEDSCI two of my friends who are Auckland grads have both said it's pretty difficult; there response when I have said I am most freaked out about CHEM110 is "dude, MEDSCI is hellacious like eleventy billion percent harder!" ... now, which is anterior again and which is posterior? :D

Just to throw in my two cents - I did medsci 142 (a few years ago now), and I think it was probably my favourite paper of my whole degree. All the lecturers are amazing and the content is really interesting. Enjoy it! I'm almost jealous, it's like when you read a good book and you wish you could read it again for the first time :)

ok thanks a lot, and thats great news about umat! congrats on your marks :)

hca12 - Ok, so the general plan is either Thursday/Friday at the moment near Grafton campus for the meet up! How does that sound to you? :)

yeah that sounds great! friday works best for me, but i can do thursday as well if that works with the others :) looking forward to meeting some fellow OLYers!

Yeah, I'm pretty sure we're leaning towards Friday at the moment ;) That's great; I'm looking forward to meeting more of you guys! :p

Ok guys, I'm thinking this Friday 13th at/near Grafton for the upcoming meet up! Grab some lunch at Subways or whatever you guys prefer around there (not sure what else there is? haha), have a general chat together, maybe do some UMAT discussion if you want = anything goes! :D

How does 11.30am sound?

Hey guys, I reckon I can probably come on friday if it's good by you guys. Not that I'm exactly a regular around here, but it's always good to meet more students :) And if we can help each other with UMAT, even better.

Possibly better to meet up near Grafton first, because I reckon campus is bound to be swarming with other OLYers, and then how will we find one another? :p

So, Subways? (It's like the only place I can find there, lol.)

Hey Rubin! :D Welcome to MSO! :p

Wow, we've sure gotten way more members in this time :)

Yeah, all goods!

Thanks for the warm welcome :) I might not be able to come on Friday because my holiday plans are constantly changing and not because of me...

Even if I don't, I can still post here and maybe come to a future meet up.

I have one really dumb question to ask: Is it true that UMAT is only 15% of the final entry grade for med? That's what I've heard but I don't want to get my hopes up...

No problem, Rubin! If you can't make it, we'll be sure to have future meet ups! :D

UMAT is only worth 15% of the final. You're correct on that. Here's the information you want to have a look at. Hope that helps!

Regardless of first semester grades, I don't understand why everyone wouldn't be going all out for 142 at the expense of the other papers. Considering the other 3 aren't core so really count for nothing at all, doing the best you can in 142 makes complete sense.

Agree with this. The other papers shouldn't be too hard to get good marks in, at least the physics (apparently pretty basic) and the general ed. If you've got 3 A+s in core papers already, then you'd have to do an insane job of stuffing up your other papers to not get an interview. Given that you're smart enough to have gotten 3 A+s, I really don't see that happening.
