I'm doing my second year of a BSc majoring in physiology at Otago...
Did OLY1 in Auckland, mucked up the med interview, got frustrated/"rage-quitted" and transferred my degree to Otago.
Although the frustration is a bit unjustified since I did almost zero-prep/thinking prior to the interview zzzz (if you're wondering how I could be so stupid, I was thinking the same thing for the entire holidays)

I see... At first I thought that maybe you were doing OLY1 and that we have another member in our ranks! :p

But did you ever ask the admissions office about the interview and how you did in that? (Though the frustration is still understandable, to say the least...if I'm not too hypocritical for commenting about something I haven't even experienced haha.)

So how is it that you ended up in Otago...? Was the prospect of just continuing the BSc unfavourable to you? (Lol, I hope I don't sound like an annoying interrogator ;))

I was told by a lady from the admissions office that I got a 7/10 in the interviews - Which I think was responsible for my downfall.

The reason I moved to Otago...Hmm - Well it was mainly that I just didn't want to stay in Auckland after somewhat "ruining" my hard work I did in OLY1... I just felt too regretful I think. It was 100% my stupidity though.

And now I am working hard to get into med via the post-grad pathway :D Hopefully I will be able to impress those interviewers next time I get the chance!

I hope I haven't just totally dragged the OLY1 thread off-topic O_o

edit: not sure if this'll be much use for reference since things change a bit each year: OLY1 GPA: think it was 8.5 for core 8.75 overall, UMAT: 92percentile, interview: 7/10, med: no cigar

Your score is open for interpretation, I suppose...really, I see that as a pretty decent score considering the almost zero-prep you did prior to it :)

Yeah!! I admire that you are going for that pathway after that setback! :D I wish you all the best too!

[OFFTOPIC]We'll let the mods decide if this is going offtopic haha. But you can always use these handy offtopic tags (using the little 'folder' icon to the far right of the selection above the place that you type :p[/OFFTOPIC]

That's not good enough for Auckland med? Were you at least on the waitlist?
I'd have thought that 7/10 was a good interview mark (not that I know anything about how it's scored, but 7/10 doesn't sound like a bad mark, especially given your UMAT/GPA).

I would have thought so as well but who knows; we have "the interview only changes the make up of med by 5%" thing from the FMHS vs this

The last factor to include in your sheet of balance would be interview. I have seen students with GPA 9.0 not getting in when A/A- average students making it in. This is because even those GPA comprises 60% of the final grade, A+ average does not give you too big an advantage over A- average (9/9*60 = 60, 7.5/9*60 = 50). That’s only a 10% difference.

The real difference comes from interview which is marked out of a score of 10 (and counts towards 25% of the final grade). An A+ average student with 5/10 interview will be on par with an A/A- average (GPA 7.5) student who scored 9/10 for interview. Given that most students who will be offered an interview will likely to be sitting around GPA of +/- 8.0, you would now be able to realize how it’s the interview (though it is supposed to be only 25% of your final grade), that decides who gets in (or not).

[offtopic]Lol [MENTION=13819]Rotors[/MENTION], forgive me if I take the faculty's word, over that of a blog [/offtopic]

I actually have friends who had 8.5 core GPA and 93%-ile UMAT who did not get in as well... I happen to be one of those people with a similarly competitive GPA and UMAT score if you look at the 2011 archives of this chat enquiries thread where I have mentioned my GPA and UMAT... there are people who according to some friends who are in part 2 of MBCHB that had a core GPA of 7.25 that have got into medicine. So at the end of the day it is the interview that counts. Yeah and I know people with 6 to 7 out of 10 who did not get in with the above UMAT/GPA combination... the average interview mark is somewhere between 6 and 7 usually though when I got the feedback from the university.

1. The interview can definitely be a game changer, this isn't being denied.
2. In reality, most people who get good grades do well on the interview = it only has a pretty minor impact on the make-up of the class.

Honestly, anecdotes about people with really good GPAs missing out don't show anything - of course some people who would've otherwise gotten in will miss out due to the interview. If we believe the faculty though (and there's no reason not to), these people are a distinct minority.

I guess then me and a few of my friends that are in biomed must be that minority then.

So when and where are we meeting??

Hey mshe500! Welcome to MSO! :D (Finally another OLY1er, haha ;))

Ok, this is undecided at the moment but we should probably plan it for next week! If you have any suggestions/days you can't come, just say so, so that the best time can be arranged for everyone :p

It can be a general getting to know each other or something more specific like UMAT (if you really wanted to), etc.

So...go for it!

[OFFTOPIC][MENTION=13210]Nogeat[/MENTION] - Lol, just flick me a text or a PM/visitor message here if you guys can get something sorted on FB! :p You know I won't cave for that ;)[/OFFTOPIC]

Haha, me too! I finally came to the realisation that there isn't that much time until UMAT xD
I'm not sure how I'm faring with my own prep for that.

Ok, I think anytime is fine with me :p (Do you mean Friday 13th, not Thursday? If that's the case, I know I'm definitely going to Grafton to pick up my MEDSCI 142 lecture guide on the Thursday.)

[OFFTOPIC]I've heard about the FB page from my friends and fellow OLYers haha. But I think I'll pass on that ;) Thanks for the heads up anyway! I'm going to flick you a PM, ok? (It may be too offtopic lol.)[/OFFTOPIC]
