A friendly reminder that in AU us Kiwi's can't get student loans or allowances and need to pay for uni and living expenses ourselves

Ok so for all of your current med students .... how hard is it to get an A+ in Medsci versus say Biosci107?

I say easier. But 142 was the only paper I actually found interesting and enjoyable in first year. I think most people would say 142 is harder than 107 though.

Medsci is defiently more enjoyable and interesting but I reckon BIOSCI. So much more to learn in MEDSCI. Though people aren't as competitive in second semester (from my view) so perhaps scaling will be less of an issue?

Yes! :D It really reinforced what we know (and don't), doesn't it? Not to mention that the real thing is so much better than all those diagrams that we get.
yeah it was great :) such a good opportunity to learn, and definitely a highlight of the year! best of luck for 106 tomorrow guys

Best of luck for MEDSCI 142 you will need more luck for that then BIOSCI 106.

Heart dissection is awesome, I missed it when I did Medsci equivalent cos I did it as a summer paper :(

Do we have any non-school leavers here who are doing OLY?

I see you haz BSc (Biomed) from Vic, how did you find applying for the BHSc at UOA? Did you just have to supply a transcript or was there more to it than that?

yeah, in Vic, its actually a bachelor of biomedical science BBioMed, they have a separate BSc degree. I actually applied for graduate entry into med but did not get in. There was no problem getting into BHSc OLY1 course, however, they refuse to let me do Biomed OLY1 for reasons of fairness i presume haha. and they didnt ask for my transcript for the BHSc application....however I guess they already had it from my graduate entry application

Cool thanks, it said "relevant degree" in the entry thing (I have a business degree) and was like oh snap! when I saw that over 1,000 people apply for 300 places into BHSc

I am trying to decide between BSc (Biomed) and BHSc ... quiet down interest in biochemistry, jeez! ... I think I will go for the BHSc

Not all of those 1000 applicants will have a shot at getting in due to poor high school grades and even more of them are pre-med kids applying for both BSc and BHSc.

The BSc is a much more desirable pre-med year because it is easier to switch into any other degree, because science tend to be favored by pre-med students and because the BHSc papers aren't well known. Plus misconceptions of the BHSc and negative perceptions of it deter people from choosing it over BSc. All my friends from high school rejected their BHSc places simply because they liked science and wanted a full science degree. Thus because of a greater demand for BSc (Biomed) the cut off scores are higher for it than for the BHSc.

So its fair to say the number of legitimate candidates for the BHSc is much smaller than showed by the numbers.

The number of candidates studying the BHSc are increasing though with this year being one of the biggest (if not, the biggest).

Word of advice, I have found the BHSc pretty challenging as the concepts of Population health are relatively new to me and this course is heavily based on population health. It a much more 'wordy' course than BSc Biomed in my opinion.

With that said, its a nice change from having to slog through 3 years of stuff like organic chemistry for the pharmacology major of biomed. I do recommend the BHSc course as having a business degree, i believe you will thrive there.
