Seems mighty strange that MAPAS seats aren't always taken up because I've heard from certain faculty members that there will be an increase in placements for medicine via the MAPAS quota.

If they can't fill the seats with suitable applicants then they can't fill them. They won't be intentionally trying to under-fill.

Oh so they are increasing the seat allocation "just incase"?

I assumed that MAPAS seats were quite competitive because I was told by a MAPAS student that they require quite a high GPA to qualify for an interview.

On a lighter note: Words most likely to be said by a lecturer:

1) Carolyn Barrett: "Ok?"
2) Peter Riordan: "Everything in those pages is examinable"
3) Larry Chamley: "Being a doctor is pointless because you'll never get in anyway (Paraphrase)"
4) Roger Booth: *Too busy singing to speak
5) Denis Loiselle: "Aboot"
6) Cather Simpson: "Secund Squared"

Hey,
What kind of % do you need in a paper to get A-, A, A+ etc.
thanks
Depends what paper, at auckland uni, most science papers are a 90% A+, 85% A and so on.......... some papers like 1st year chem is 85% A+, each paper sets their own grade boundary and they occasionally shift it to compensate for years where the paper was too easy/hard

I think this is a rumor that has come up more than once in the last few yeas. From what I know about it, a study was undertaken to assess that aptitude of the interview for determining the positive traits of doctors. The results were in conclusive, so the faculty decided to scrap the interview. This was met with resistance from AUMSA, so the final decision on the interview was postponed.

That's just what I heard from a Doctor. I think it's a stupid idea to scrap the interview. It is what sets Auckland University apart from Otago University, and it makes sure that students attempting entry do so for the right reasons.

Auckland is keeping the interview. There was an article from the Auckland med school dean in the NZ medical journal a month ago explaining why.

I know a few in med now doing it for the wrong reasons, but yeah I see what you mean.

What I think is awesome about the interview is it tests communication skills. Looking at sentinel events for NZ, communication is fairly poor. True, that's likely a result of complex factors at play and not simply the individuals ability but I reckon screening for the right skills is a good step to mitigating this issue ;)
