Hi Cp3

From what I've heard, the 2 most popular general ed papers that 1st years biomeds take are ECON151G and PHIL 105G. It's because they are the easiest papers to get A+ in.

I did ECON151G but I knew a lot of people who did PHIL105G and heard it was really easy so I never heard of any negative feedbacks from it in terms of difficulty level. The good thing about PHIL105G is that there is no exam for it at the end of year, there is only an assignment at the end (and a mid semester test or is assignment?) so you can focus on your other subjects mainly medsci142. General ed papers are not there to differentiate people like the core subjects are, but to introduce you to something outside the course and it's there to easily get A+ in =P.

I'm doing econ151g(yay only 2 lecs a week and online video type!), but i know a close friend of mine who did Phil last semester. She said it was a breeze, she skipped lectures, and only studied for like two days (maybe couple of hours) for the midterm test, and didn't bother too much on the final assignment either coz it was during the study leave and she "just got sick of it" (lol). But she still got A+ in the end so i wouldn't think it to be too difficult.

Sup!

Oh wow, I think I'm starting to regret taking HISTORY103G. It's fun and all, but the essay...

And I had some trouble with thermal physics too. But Urone was very useful in that regard, and just redoing the problems made me understand how to use the formulas.

Hey guys,

Not sure if this is news to any of you but a little while back I heard Auckland is getting 36 of the 60 new medical student places for 2010.

A while back National announced 60 extra funded medical places for 2010. But back then how the 60 places would be split between the two schools wasn't finalised.

Now it's been confirmed that Auckland will +36 and Otago +24 for the classes beginning in 2010.

Will you guys at Auck med have the resources and space to accomodate the new students? Cause at Otago we certainly won't :(

Nope, that's not possible. You'd have to finish your biomed degree then apply for graduate entry if you wanted to get into Otago that way.

Alright, what about the University of New South Wales? Can you apply there after finishing your first year at Auckland?

I'm planning to apply for Australian med schools too. Don't know exactly how yet. Anyone got any ideas?

By the way to the biomeders: all the best for Physics and BIOSCI106 tests this week!!

Leafie and zan00ba

Yes, you can apply to aussie med schools after first year. It's what I did anyway =P
You will need to do some research yourself about which universities will accept you though. Go to their websites and give it a good hunt, most of the time you can easily find out whether you are eligible or not. Be warned, I think the closing date for applications end a few days after UMAT results come out. What I did was mass apply straight after i got my UMAT result lol.

Universities like adelaide have already closed their applications i think. Some universities like UNSW required you to fill out a form earlier in the year

good luck guys

not being racist
but basically Otago and Auckland want to r@pe asians (i'm one myself)
at Otago they have 10% on section 3 in UMAT because Asians are good at it, and suck at S1 and S2
at Auckland interviews are enough to r@pe asians outta the course (so Maoris can get in..)

Hey, I'm Asian and I suck at Section 3. Besides, if medical school consisted of 50% Asians when Asians only consist of 10% of the population, wouldn't that be unfair? The selection processes don't discriminate in the end anyway. lordgarlics year was like 30% Asians, if I recall him saying it correctly.

30% if that haha. I think 25% is a rough estimate. Though I hear it's been climbing a bit in subsequent years.

I hardly think the selection systems are asian purging. It just happens that most asian people, especially ones who have immigrated recently don't know how to communicate and live at university studying 24/7 with no non-academic life

Well, S3 being worth 10% is not so much an anti-asian thing. They just feel it's not something as relevant to the skills a doctor needs, and to me that makes sense. I'd much rather someone get in over me because they have a much higher S1 or S2 score, than because they can identify patterns in pictures better than I can.

i heard that all A+ in your 4 core courses would be an advantage but since most people get good marks, the interview would probably be the determining factor. I knew someone who had a gpa 9 but still didn't get in so I guess it's an advantage but not the end of the world if you don't get it :)

Similar to what dogtown has said. Obviously 9 > 8.75 > 8.50...but if your GPA is in the 8.5-9.0 range I think it comes down to the interview. You'd need to do an OK/good interview nonetheless.

If your GPA was a 7.00 then you'd probably be disadvantaged going into the interviews and have to perform pretty well on the day.

:)

I heard that some ppl with GPA of 7 (A-?) didn't even get an interview last year. And it feels that our year seems to be more competitive. A girl in third year told me that a GPA of 8 for the 8 courses would be safe. Don't know if the info is accurate though. These days i hear all sorta of stuffs about med school entrance lol. My own thoughts are, if they only interview twice the no. of ppl they take, that means it would be the top ~300ish. Hence if 500 got B+ and above (as what uni says is required for the interview) the only logical way is to cut off the bottom 200 with lower grades. I also heard that UMAT counts for <15%.
Does anyone have some reliable info lol.

Btw, best luck for da coming medsci test!!
