Hey everyone

that was an interesting 56 pages to read, i just found this site yesterday, too bad i missed out from the start of the year

quick intro, im doin biomed with the rest of the herd, med hopeful, and for now im just waiting on our UMAT scores to come out, not to mention readin heaps of medsci

Hmm...coming to think of it you're probably right. Apparently the cut-off for interviews in 2007 was 7.0, and in 2008 it was 7.25

An 8.0 across the 8 papers would most probably guarantee you an interview. Even if the GPAs of the applicants are rising I'd say 7.5 would suffice this year, unless you have a crazy crazy class.

I guess the most reliable info. would be from the health science website - 60% GPA, 15% UMAT, 25% interview. It's nice to know, but at the end of the day it's just heads down, keeping the GPA up and crossing your fingers later this month :)

I heard that some ppl with GPA of 7 (A-?) didn't even get an interview last year. And it feels that our year seems to be more competitive. A girl in third year told me that a GPA of 8 for the 8 courses would be safe. Don't know if the info is accurate though. These days i hear all sorta of stuffs about med school entrance lol. My own thoughts are, if they only interview twice the no. of ppl they take, that means it would be the top ~300ish. Hence if 500 got B+ and above (as what uni says is required for the interview) the only logical way is to cut off the bottom 200 with lower grades. I also heard that UMAT counts for <15%.
Does anyone have some reliable info lol.

don't disregard them but

just try not to listen too much into those things :)

probably hard to keep your sanity if everyone around you says you need a gpa of 12.6443, umat in the 164th percentile and public speaking skills of barack obama to get in

lol! whats sad is after all the trouble and competition getting in, heaps of students are just gonna drop out, dam drama fanboys

Welcome, gwalker :D

Leafie, someone told me that the test is 1 hour 20 minutes long and composed of 55 questions. Take it with a grain of salt though.

Good luck everyone for the Medsci test. This semester does feel awfully fast though lol.

The medsci test is all MCQ unless it's changed. Usually 56 MCQ? or 55 i can't remember. Usually 2 questions/lectures and 5-6 questions/lab as a ROUGHF guide

man I feel old, I did 142 4 years ago haha

medsci should be easy, its just annoying how they dont give us past papers, aw well

say garlic, i was always wondering, dont they teach you guys the various fields in medicine? like oncology, dermatology, neurology and so on.. and how is anaesthetics a whole paper? :S

Hi everyone, just been reading this very interesting thread of 57 pages and decided to join in. :)

I'm a first year Biomed student at Auckland, med hopeful. I wish I found this forum earlier, great stuff.

sup Pianist, welcome to the forum. I know exactly what you mean, but at least we found it ay? better now than never

hows studying goin?

there are odd lectures on those aforementioned disciplines. But in 4th - 6th year you go through clinical rotations. So you "work" in clinical anasethetics for 2 weeks, general medicine in 6 weeks etc etc

There are no papers in 4th year onwards per say

as for medsci past papers, you just have to know where to look haha. I know of several sets that float around from 04 to 06 haha

Heya gwalker. Studying's not going too bad I suppose, just memorize the course book and we're good. :P How's yours?
I'm more worried about my UMAT. O_o

Yea i guess, well i heard UMAT scores are announced sometime around 22nd of this month, and according to the first few posts as well as other speculation its hardly worth jack for auckland uni.

BTW garlic i found some medsci exams on voyager, but they're not exactly MCQ so its its hard to judge how difficult our exam will be. Either way, i thought WE had alot of learning to do, then i looked up MBChB papers on voyager...... d.d.daimmmm

wait till you look at the 4th year + mBCHB exams :p

those are nauseating

medsci142 is a piece of cake comparatively! MCQ will be floating around. I'm sure some people have them

Hey chaps, I am also a current biomed student etc etc  and have read most of this thread, so can I just get a couple of things straight?

1. Once you have a B+ average over the eight courses, THEN you are ranked with your four common courses for the interview?
2. Is there some sort of special information day when they tell us about the interview and what is required etc? Or is it just more hearsay, like this whole year has been?

Thanks! (yy)

Hey there,

1. Correct. "B+" average over the eight courses (actually an ~A- average in recent years), then ranking using the applicant's four common papers to offer the interviews.

2. I think a good rough guide would be the info. regarding interviews on the FMHS website. Other than that, just think things through when filling out your MH03 form and be sure that you can discuss the items you list down, elaborate on them, and perhaps relate it to medicine. From what I know the interview process can be quite unpredictable so the best advice would probably be to stay calm, be yourself on the day and just be ready for anything :)

The UMAT GPA is calculated by taking the average of the 3 UMAT scores and matching it to a grade:

90-100 A+ 9.00
85-90 A 8.00
80-85 A- 7.00
75-80 B+ 6.00
70-75 B 5.00
65-70 B- 4.00
60-65 C+ 3.00
55-60 C 2.00
50-55 C- 1.00

Hey again, I am just wondering where you got the information from regarding how the umat is converted to a gpa? (it's just there is so much hearsay about the whole 'entry into medicine' thing )

Cheers! ^_^

that's what the faculty told me when I asked them back when I was in year 1

Auckland MBCHB Interview 2009

Hi everyone,

(Redirect me if there is already a thread on this, I couldn't find one )

But anyway, I am just wondering what the interview at Auckland Uni entails? i.e. how many people interview you, is it relaxed, what kinds of questions do they ask, and if I just go there with an authentic desire to be a doctor will I do well - or do I need to overly prepare?

Thanks

The auckland interview is essentially a long conversation with 2 interviewers. It's fairly casual and the questions they ask you are normally based on your MH03 form.

Don't really need to overly prepare, but having an idea of what's in the news does help a little
