I was happy until the lab Qs, then ... DISASTER!! I was like half guessed half of them, honestly. Apparently nobody liked the lab questions.
Btw i heard that the results will be out probably by tomorrow.

For all the MBChBers at Auckland, would you say it's easier to go through the Health Sciences or Biomed pathway? Or is it the same for both?

Well the 4 core papers (the one's you are ranked on to get into medicine) are the same, so really it depends on your interests, i.e. do you enjoy biology and wrote learning, or more conceptual health related topics (population health)? Doing Biomed does help with biosci107 and medsci142, but you also do have to do bio106 (the worst subject) and physics. I would recommend doing physics in school, as I haven't and it is quite hard, however if you work hard you should still be able to get a good mark. I am not sure what Health Science exactly entails so I cant comment in detail, but there are a lot more assignments and essays etc.

Have fun next year, it certainly drains you quite a lot, working so hard, despite knowing you may or may not make the cut. It is hopefully worth it though ^_^

So howd u do in your medsci and biosci test guys? frankly i did well, but not as good as i had hoped on medsci, aw well, the class avg was liek 63%, i was expecting abit higher for an all MCQ test but i guess that just serves to show that it doesnt really make much of a difference

Did pretty well too. Though I must say I did better than expected for 106. I have to say though I don't like the trend towards MCQ. I think short answers are easier :D

The 4 core papers are the same in both Biomed and Health Sciences so in terms of getting into medicine I would say they both offer the same chances. However you may find one easier than the other depending on whether you are more of an essays and assignments person (Health Sciences) or you prefer more sciencey stuff and short answers (Biomed). I would just suggest you do the one you think most suits you, and the one you would find most interesting. It would probably also help to think about which one you would want to continue in should you unfortunately not make it into med.

You'll get your fair share of short answers in the exam don't worry. I think the reason they like to use MCQs for midsemester tests is that theyre quicker to mark so you can get them back earlier, so you have more time to work on what you need to work on. MCQs also let them ask you slightly harder, more conceptually oriented questions, rather than just testing who has the best recall.

All the tests I've had this semester in MBChB 2 have been MCQs...which has probably saved me from complete failure haha.

its sotra worrying how MBChB tests are becoming mostly MCQ, i think the biosci style exams are the best for assessing knowledge

Midsemester tests are worth very little in MBChBII, 15% I think. They are more to give you an idea of where you are at. Our MCQs definitly aren't a complete walk in the park, and can be really challenging and good for assessing your understanding and knowledge. In a cardiorespiratory we had not long ago 1/3 of the class failed. MCQs are good for testing conceptual knowledge sometimes, and throwing in some stuff you really have to think about, so they don't just test how good you can rote learn stuff.

The exams in MBChBII are about 1/3 MCQ , 2/3 short and sometimes longer answers.

the MCQ are exponentially harder than the SAQ. They often use negative MCQs and have stems about 4-6 sentences long.

whats up with the AUMSA forum? is it coz im unregistered or are there like no posts there whatsoever?

BTW what is Quilter's specialty? is he like a general physiologist? its sad how he's gonna retire this year, lucky we caught up with him tho

UMAT is out!!!! I did worst in sec2 and best in sec3. The score is somewhat within my expectation so not too bad i guess lol.
